Interestingly, this is not the original painting on the auditorium ceiling. The original, painted by Jules Lenepveu, was replaced in 1964 with the current one you see today. The replacement was painted by Russian-French artist Marc Chagall and caused much controversy at the time. The original painting was kept intact underneath the replacement, as the new painting was done on canvas then mounted over the original painting.
