The Opéra Garnier is a national theater which has the vocation to be an academy of music, choreography and lyric poetry; it is a major element of the heritage of the 9th district of Paris and the capital. It is located on the Place de l'Opéra, at the northern end of the Avenue de l'Opéra and at the crossroads of many roads.

The building is a particularly representative monument of the eclectic architecture and historicist style of the second half of the 19th century. Based on a design by the architect Charles Garnier, chosen following a competition, its construction, decided by Napoleon III as part of the transformation of Paris led by the prefect Haussmann and interrupted by the war of 1870, was resumed at the beginning of the Third Republic, after the destruction by fire of the opera Le Peletier in 1873. The building was inaugurated on January 5, 1875 by President Mac Mahon under the Third Republic.

The Palais Garnier is the thirteenth theatre to house the Paris Opera since it was founded by Louis XIV in 1669. It was built on the orders of Napoleon III as part of the great Parisian reconstruction project carried out by Baron Haussmann. The project for an opera house was put out to competition and was won by Charles Garnier, an unknown 35-year-old architect. Building work, which lasted fifteen years, from 1860 to 1875, was interrupted by numerous incidents, including the 1870 war, the fall of the Empire and the Commune. The Palais Garnier was inaugurated on 15 January 1875.

The Palais Garnier is a 1,979-seat opera house built in 1875 for the Paris Opera, and designed by architect, Charles Garnier. It was the primary home of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when the Opéra Bastille opened at the Place de la Bastille. The Paris Opera now mainly uses the Palais Garnier for ballet.

The Palais Garnier has been called "probably the most famous opera house in the world, a symbol of Paris like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, or the Sacré Coeur Basilica." It was used as the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera and subsequent adaptations in films and Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular 1986 musical.

The Paris Hotel and Casino's replica of the Fontaine des Mers from Place de la Concorde in front of a portion of the casino's facade which itself is a replica of the Opéra Garnier, a Beaux-Arts building, also in Paris.

The Fontaine des Mers (Fountain of the Seas) is the fountain at the southern end of the Place de la Concorde, one of two in the square. The fountain was designed and installed by Jacob Ignaz Hittorf in 1836 as a part of the redesign of the square after the Reign of Terror during which the square was dominated by the guillotine. The fountain at the northern end of the square, the Fontaine des Fleuves, also designed by Hittorf, was installed in 1839.

The Opéra Garnier or Palais Garnier, was begun under the reign of Emperor Napoleon III to house the Parisian Opera and Ballet companies, after an architectural competition in 1861 that was won by the architect Charles Garnier. Due to many setbacks, the opera house was not completed till 1874.

The Opéra Garnier's subterranean lake and a fatal incident involving the grand chandelier inspired Gaston Leroux's classic novel The Phantom of the Opera.

The repeating arcs and Beaux-Arts ornamentation set against the uncluttered sky is what caught my eye. Typically, the fountain has water flowing over all the edges, obscuring the fountains ornamentation from full view as in this shot.

Most of the roofs of Paris are covered with zinc.

Zinc is malleable and does not break like aluminum.

Zinc oxidizes, forming an impermeable layer that stops the oxidation is no corrosion or very slowly.
