The carved hongmu scepter is inlaid with three reticulated plaques crisply carved in openwork from greyish-green jade, each with an exotic bird above a five-petalled blossom amidst overlapping leaves.

View of the main entrance of Tai Fu Tai through the ceramic openwork on the wall enclosure of the garden.
Tai Fu Tai was built around 1865 as the residence of local official Man Chung-luen. It's a typical village mansion of the scholar-gentry class. The Man clan has settled in San Tin since the 15th century and are a powerful family clan in the New Territories. Since Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in 1839, the Man clan has also increasingly sent their male heirs overseas for educaton. As such, the Tai Fu Tai Manion very interestingly incorporated some Western archiectural details when it was built and decorated.

the silver-gilt openwork band that enframes the mirror itself is decorated with herons and other birds among palmettes, flowers and leaves. The wooden back originally may have been covered with fabric that would have set off the open frame most effectively.
A booklet from the church identifies him as saint Wilibrordus. The tribune was bought from the Walburgiskerk in Antwerpen ; made ~1667.
Two Bronze "Animal" Openwork Belt Hooks
North or Northwest China, 5th Century BC
One inlaid in turquoise has a long-necked hook that issues from the mouth of a dragon, its openwork body curved around to form one side while the other side is formed by an animal biting the neck of the dragon, a loop projecting from the edge of this animal suspends a linked chain, and a button is on the reverse. The other is cast as three animals, two shown recumbent facing in opposite directions, the uppermost with the head of a smaller animal in its jaws. A hook projects from one edge and a button is on the reverse.

Built in large granite bati, it has a bell tower with three openwork ceilings, wearing a dome. The main doors are hung on the wall chains and crosses worn by the red penitent on Good Friday. Note the superb Baroque altarpiece, in polychrome marbles exported to the seventeenth century of Liguria and Tuscany.

Copyright 2016, James A. Glazier. Many of these design elements and ornaments wouldn't be out of place in Northern Germany or even Ireland of the same period. The spread and uniformity of early Iron age design is impressive.
Based on an openwork cardigan from fabulous Flirty crochet book by Katherine Lee but I used an fan pattern sttich to create a thicker closed pattern cardigan. I used Patons Diploma Gold DK and a 4.50mm hook
This helmet would have been worn by gladiator fighting as a 'retiarus', one of the traditional gladiator types. They were armed with a long trident and weighted net, and often paired with sword and shield wielding opponents. Note the openwork face screen.

And now, finally, I reveal the outcome of this very special project initiated by a drawing of Marietta.
First, the "dress", the basis of this set.
It is composed of three separate elements.
- A blouse, almost entirely in old cotton lace, left transparent, with the cuffs and collar of ruffled cotton muslin, edged with fine lace. A fake pearl necklace and a jewel adorns the chest.
- A sleeveless dress using the same model as the Malina dress.
The top of the dress is cut in a dotted swiss fabric, ivory dots on white background. And the skirt is fashioned from a beautiful cotton lace embroidered sometimes as a "broderie anglaise" sometimes as an openwork "venice lace".
In addition, I added a bouquet embroidery on the bust, suggesting two-tone gold and silver, with a subtle mix of pearls and silk ribbon underlined by rayon thread.
The rest of the skirt is lightly beaded to evoke the glint of some snowflakes that would be lost there.
- A tulle petticoat, trimmed by a small and dense tulle ruffle and highlighted by a beaded silk ribbon.
Since this dress will be worn by a custom Vanilla, I used mine as model...
The frosted berries were made by me. The leaves are made of polymer clay, varnished and falsely frosted after baking and berries are made with beads, also frosted.

A Very Rare and Unusual Small Turquoise-Embellished Gilt-Bronze Dragon-Form Garment Hook

The garment hook is cast in openwork with the coiled body of a dragon with two tiny turquoise inlays, the beast’s long neck terminating in the head of a camel set at an angle to form the hook. A large circular button is on the back.
