Another big year in 2024.

Thanks to #mocaroundgang build challenges during the year for a few runs of fun cars. I even hosted a round in April, titled #hotwheels that led to probably some of my most creative builds for a while. And the March #openwheeler challenge gave me the chance to get stuck into a number of Formula One racers.

Many of my only monthly themes thrown in there as well, including miniland-interpretations of LEGO sets (February), Redo & Redemption (a popular theme from LUGNuts), and also quite a lot of eating through cars I have designed but not shown over the past few years.

Probably the biggest change this year was the number of builds that now have instructions, a record 69 from this years build list. Part of the slow down at the end of the year was rectifying the LDD assemblies for many car projects using the enigmatic 'template' function.

Looking forward to a 2025 which is less chaotic.

I've been a bit slack lately, in building anything for Instagram's #mocaroundgang group.

To get me started this year (an only just in time), is this VW T1 Transporter Extra-Long Wheelbase used for transporting a classic Porsche 550 Spyder. This ensemble is built to the theme #transporter hosted by @besbasdesign

This is actually my first succesful attempt to design a 550 Spyder, despite a number of attempts. This car is exceedinly curvy within its short wheelbase.

The VW T1, on the otherhand is about my 12th, though the first time in this long format.

Next month, due on March 16th is to the theme #openwheeler and I hope to have been a bit more productive in that space, given the start of this year's F1 season.

Shown here is the stunning 1988 Benetton-Ford B188 Formula One Racer.

1988 marked the final year of the 'Turbo-era', car built with 1.5-litre V6 turbo engines, but the switch to naturally-aspirated 3.5L engines had already begun for some teams, including Benetton.

The B188 was powered by the Ford DFR V8 RA engine, producing 629 PS, certainly less tan the Turbo cars, but one of the leading naturally aspirated cars, with commesurate performance from the Benetton team.

The B188 managed only 1 fastest lap, and no wins, in a year totally dominated by the Mclaren MP4/4. However, as with other Benetton race cars for this era, the striking, colourful livery made it one of the most attractive racecars of this, or any era.

The Benetton is not featured in any Lego sets, but has been chosen to build for its beauty, for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

Awesomeness in abundance

Shown here is the 1992 Williams-Renault FW14B Formula One Racer, bearing famous 'Red 5'.

Just in time too, for instagram #mocaroundgang #mocaround75 to the build theme #openwheeler

The car debuted in late 1991, powered by the 3.5L Renault RS3C, updated to RS4 during the 1992 season.

During this period, Williams ran their cars is striing White-Navy-Yellow, a combination of their sponsorship deals with Cannon, Labatt's and Camel, respectively. The car shown here, 'Red 5' was the racing number made famous by Nigel Mansell, who one the 1992 Driver's Championship, along with the Team Cnstructors Championship that year.

The Williams-Renault FW14B with Red 5 was issued as a LEGO City set in 1992 nr 1750.

Hopefully one of many entries for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

Shown here is the 2023 Mercedes-AMG challenger W14 Formula One Racer.

For 2023 Formula One racers are continuing with similar regulation to the past couple of years. This includes cars with quite a large footprint from their long wheelbases and wide tracks.

The W14 is powered by a 1,600cc V6, with a single turbochager, supplemented by an Electric Hybrid drive and battery.

The Mercedes-AMG W14 is characterised by a mostly black bodywork, white sponsor stickers, and a cyan feature stripe.

The Mercedes-AMG is featured in the 2024 Lego lineup in Lego Technic form nr 42171 - a somewhat odd choice, given that the 2023 W14 scored no wins, the first time Mercedes has been winless since 2002, despite finishing 2nd in the Constructors Championship, and featuring 7-times Drivers Championship winner, Lewis Hamilton as one of their drivers.

Hopefully one of many entries for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

Eddie Jordan established Jordan Grand Prix with a view to entering Formula One and hired Gary Anderson to design his team's first Formula One chassis. Anderson had previously worked for Reynard and had designed that manufacturer's F3000 car. He would carry out design work on what was eventually designated the 191.

The car had a tidy form with a raised nose and a drooping rear diffuser. Originally designed for the Judd V8, the 191 ended up being powered by a Cosworth-Ford HB V8 engine, producing 650 hp (485 kW).

The 191 managed only 1 fastest lap, and no wins, in a year dominated by Mclaren and Williams. However, the debut year for Jordan also signified the debut of one of the sport's all-time champions, Michael Schumacher, dricing one race Grand Prix, qualifying 7th. A legal dispute ensued between Jordan, and Benetton, who Schumacher would go on to drive for the following year, and ultimately win two world championships.

The Jordan 191 has also been recognised as one of teh most beautiful Formula 1 cars of all time.

The Jordan is not featured in any Lego sets, but has been chosen to build for its beauty, for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

Benetton had run beautiful (if not particularly succesful) cars in Formula 1 starting in 1986 after purchasing the Tolman F1 team.

Following a stunning debut for a single F1 event with Jordan in 1991, newcomer Michael Schumacher signed a full contract with Benetton the following year.

Despite having not the fastest car, Schumacher's driving skill was clear. 1994 showed what was to come, with dominant performace from the opening round of the season, four straight victories, a 2nd place podium, and two further wins.

The season was unfortunately marred by the fatailities of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, with hasty moduificatons to racertracks and racecars in an effort to improve safety.

Schumacher's early season success, followed by an additiona two victories in the second half of the season saw him score his first F1 Driver's Championship. Despite this performace, Benetton was beaten to the Constructors Championship by Williams, mostly due to DNFs by Schumacher's three Benetton team mates in the 2nd car.

The 1995 B195 rectified this situation, providing Benetton their first (and only) Constructors Championship.

The Benetton is not featured in any Lego sets, but has been chosen for its significance in Michael Schumacher's early career, for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

For 2023 Formula One racers are continuing with similar regulation to the past couple of years. This includes cars with quite a large footprint from their long wheelbases and wide tracks.

The car was originally referred to by McLaren and the press as the MCL37, a continuation of the numbering scheme that began in 1981 with the McLaren MP4/1 (although the MP4 prefix was replaced by MCL in 2017 following the departure of Ron Dennis from the team). However, McLaren announced that the car would be named the MCL60 to commemorate 60 years since Bruce McLaren founded the team in 1963.

The MCL60 is powered by the Mercedes-AMG 1,600cc V6, with a single turbochager, supplemented by an Electric Hybrid drive and battery.

The Mclaren MCL60 bodywork livery is an evolution of the previous years black, orange and cyan, with primary sponsors, Velo and Google..

The Mclaren MCL60 is featured in the 2024 Lego lineup in Lego Speedchampions form, nr 76919 - a somewhat odd choice, given that the 2023 MCL60 scored no wins, finishing a distant 4th in the Constructors Championship.

Hopefully one of many entries for this month's mocaround challenge, hosted by @paulielego and finishing up on March 16th.

I thought it would be interesting to create an openwheeled racing car that could fit the Friends size figures, and yet still be smaller than an F1 car.
