Our Kitchen shelves.

Fiestaware colors: turquoise, sunflower,scarlet

Am posting this to remind me how peaceful it all was before the builders started knocking the kitchen wall out to the left of the shelves. Some day soon it'll all be ok.

White, dishes, shelves, chalkboard. From EmmasBlogg.

This kitchen combines classic, modern, and cottage styles to great effect: you have the timeless black-and-white palette, the sleek countertops, stainless steel appliances, and white subway tile, and the charm of open shelves, ladder-back chairs, and yellow dishes. I like the mix of open shelving and cabinets, too -- 'cause you don't always want everyone seeing your business, you know?

Rustic yet modern, chic but not cold -- interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard struck the right balance in Ellen Pompeo's Hollywood kitchen. I particularly like the sleek stainless steel paired with the lovely French terra-cotta tiles, open shelves, and dash of color (in the form of bowls and flowers).

Pic found on Foxgloves, Fabric and Folly blog. I like the open shelving, the glass front cabinets, the butcher block counter top, the big glass canisters on the counter, and the relaxed feel of the horizontal boards.

Cheerful, versatile, and highly functional -- I love the mix of open shelves and glass-fronted cabinets, and the shot of yellow introduced through the servingware. Another great feature? The undermount sink. It looks gorgeous and means easier clean-up, too.

The galley kitchen of designer Phoebe Howard’s Atlanta apartment. Walls are painted Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. Open shelves are from the Kitchen Source; dishwasher from Fisher & Paykel.

Says Howard: “Stools and a bar-height table rather than dining chairs and a regular 30-inch table keep it from feeling congested. There are no cabinets above the marble countertop, just chunky floating shelves wrapped in stainless steel, and an antiqued mirror in a tortoiseshell frame. I've always lived in old houses with windows above the kitchen sink — the mirror's the window I couldn't have here."

Picture from House Beautiful magazine. I like the glass-front cabinets, the light pouring in, and the feeling this is a small yet well organized kitchen.

I love this space -- it feels rustic yet chic and well-edited. No red-and-gold Provencal tablecloths and curtains and seat cushions, thank you! Not that those are entirely bad. They have their place -- in Provence.

Design by Mimmi O'Connell, the Italian-born, London-based interior designer known for her 'fusion' looks. She was one of the first to bring Chinese furniture to the UK in the 1970s, and a forerunner in mixing rustic, country, and antique Asian furniture in a modern way, pairing 200-year-old tables and chairs with linen upholstery and European art.

We both love 1930's china, especially Paragon and have been collecting and mixing and matching for a few years now. I used to keep it all in a cupboard and bring it out in the Summertime..wonderful for tea in the garden! A eureka moment had me thinking " why keep it and enjoy it just in the Summer?" And I painted the inside of our open shelves, in the kitchen, sky blue and whoaaaa...loved it! Why on earth didn't i do this before!

dawsons dad made those fantastic open shelves. i LOVE them! they make the kitchen feel so open. i did paint the bottom cabinets and the walls...and the ceiling and man that part was NOT fun. there was some mudding, some sanding and more sanding involved but i'm definitely happy with it now. still need some window scraping.
