We are working on better tile compression by exporting our terrain data to JPG, like Google does. Right now we are just using PNGs. There are four different tiles from left to right. The first on in each set is the JPG, listing out it's export quality setting and the % of KB saving we will achieve compared to the second in the set is a PNG.
OpenLayers 2.0-alpha1 has been released (http://drupal.org/node/708270) and and there is a clear upgrade path from both 0.x and 1.x. As you can seen in this image, a lot of improvements have been made to the administration interface.
Details on the improvements and roadmap at developmentseed.org/blog/2010/feb/10/open-layer-20-alpha1....

It's all Derick Rethans' fault that all these building are here on OSM. I knew that Derick had rendered London at z19 and z20 so I thought I'd try it too.
I ran into a problem zooming into z19 of my local tiles but eventually solved it. It just required adding numZoomLevels to the options for the layer.
A number of features make it obvious that the default mapnik style requires quite a bit of work at this level (roads in general are too thin). Many polygons also lack refinement. I chose this area because most of the buildings had been done carefully (following Derick's example).
