This is the South Falls at Silver Falls State Park near Silverton, Oregon. I never really thought about going there when I lived in the Columbia Gorge, because it was too far for a day trip. Now, I can more easily go there. Exploration will have to be done.
I left the people in the shot mainly to show the scale of the falls.

This is from a few years ago. It’s a different angle on the famous red barn in Pine Grove, Oregon, near Hood River.
I’ve never been able to get the classic picture of this barn. You have to trespass to get it, and I tend to respect the property owners’ wishes.

I was chasing a sun break through the Columbia Gorge, and was not catching up. I decided to consolidate my losses, and get some pictures of the closest waterfall, and then go home. I was taking pictures of Bridal Veil Falls, when I noticed that the color temperature of the scene had changed. I took this picture, and then turned around. A new sun break had broken through the clouds behind me, and it was close enough to sunset that it was brilliant yellow. I packed up my camera, and made it back to the parking lot was quickly as I could. The light was intense through the dark clouds. I headed up to Crown Point, and the light faded just as I was reaching the top.

We were in Mosier to photograph the orchards and wildflowers, but the sky was an unpleasing blank, light blue with no clouds, fluffy or otherwise, to give the landscapes some character. Days like that are made for infrared. I like the way the sky turned black in this one.

I took this in March, just as the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic was beginning to close the nation down. I used the camera that I have been referring to as the ”Twirly Camera”, because the lens spins on a turret to get the wide angle. It creates some interesting effcts, some of which are welcome. It doesn’t do nearby objects very well, but if you get it just right, objects like the guardrails in this picture will seem to splay out before you. I like it.

We had some rare breaks in the cloud cover a couple of weeks ago - not a whole, sunny day, mind you, but entire minutes that weren't gray and brooding. I happened to be out in the Gorge at the time, so I took a few pictures near Sheppard's Dell where I liked the interplay of light, rock, and trees.

I have begun hiking regularly in the Columbia Gorge after years of sporatic treks. I hiked to Upper Latourell Falls this morning, and developed the film when I got home. It was a film-only hike, just like old times. I did not take the digital camera along, so I was left with my old method of a handheld meter, which would have served me well if I would have let it. I second-guessed the meter, thinking that the scene was 5 stops below full sun. It turns out that it was 7 stops. Luckily, I bracketed. This was an 11-second exposure.

I was out in the Hood River area a few weeks ago, searching for the right light, and something to point my cameras at. I managed one of those things, and the right light was not one of them. So, I made due, and got out the Twirly Camera at Dead Point Creek near Hood River, Oregon. I was using very slow film, and it was dark. The slowest shutter speed on a Noblex is 1/15th sec. To get longer exposures, you have to put it on Manual, and keep that lens turret spinning until you have the right time. In this case, the lens spun around 45 times.

I was in Bend in July for the Bend Summer Festival where I took part as a vendor, and I managed to make some stops on the way home. One of them was at Smith Rock where I used the Hasselblad flexbody with both a film back and a digital back. This one was with the film back. I'm happy with the way it looks.

I like Starvation Creek Falls. I have attempted to capture it properly for years. I think I have come close to getting it right a few times. This is one of the better ones.
I took a vantage point on top of a large rock, and I think the added distance allowed me to get the foreground in focus. The composition is very pleasing as a result.

It took me a long time to figure out where this was, but I eventually landed on Hug Point near Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Coast is imfamous for its cloud cover, and that particular day wasn’t budging. A wise photographer friend once tole me, “Every day is the perfect day to be taking pictures”, so I got out my camera despite the dreary weather, and took this picture, along with quite a few more.

I have been fighting with my 8x10 Deardorff over the last few weeks. It seems to have picked up a few more light leaks. All of my pictures that I developed today were ruined except for this one. This one seemed to have escaped the carnage.
I had to dust off the front and back tilt skills to pull this one off without having to put the exposure time into the reciprocity failure zone. It seems to have worked. Over all, I'm happy with it.

I found out recently that this rock overhang on the Historic Columbia River Highway is called “Half Tunnel.” I’ve wantd to photograph it for years, but it’s on a turn with no place to walk. I braved the traffic today, and got the picture.

Supposedly, this is the longest train trestle still in use in the US. It is called the Holcomb Creek Trestle, and is located on Dick Road in Helvetia, Oregon.

We went out to Maryhill to pick up some wine, and drove home on the Oregon side. Just west of Rowena, there are some lovely white oak trees that are thick with lichen. I wondered how that would look in black and white, and then I threw a Lensbaby into the mix. It got deliciously creepy.

We wanted to escape the omnipresent cloud cover in the Portland area, so we made a pilgrimage to the eastern Columbia Gorge, where the forecast predicted sun breaks. We were not disappointed. The Columbia River was calm, and the sun peaked through the clouds to the south.

Pandemic Apocalypse Photo Expedition into the neighborhood. I did this because I can’t go anywhere else. Seeing the world through a narrower field of vision can be kind of like writing a sonnet. Poets say (I have called myself a poet in the past, but I haven’t written many since college) that the rigid structure of a sonnet can bring out greater creativity because it forces one to think in different ways. Gaia and I were out for a walk today, and I took the infrared camera. She uses the wheelchair as a walker until she can’t walk anymore, then set sits down, and I push her in the wheelchair. It has extended our range quite a bit.

That said, I think that living in a popular tourist destination, and with the occasional tourists who have no concept of where they are not supposed to go, signs like these are inevitable, and understandable. This is why I am not geotagging this picture.
I revisited this one just a couple of weeks after posting it. There was very little detail in the highlights. I like this version better.

We went out tonight to look at a house that is for sale in Troutdale, and after that, I didn't feel like going straight home, so we drove out to the Histroic Columbia River Highway, and then made the loop up Stark Street back to Fairview. I stopped for pictures at the bridge over the Sandy River.

I took the new digital camera back out for its maiden voyage today at White River Falls. It's a Hasselblad CFV 100C, and I was using it on the Flexbody. I'm impressed with the image quality, and the image size is nothing to sneeze at either. I cropped this one about 1/4 of the frame, and it is still 35" across at 300 dpi.. It was a gray day at the falls, but that gave me the opportunity to get a wide range of tones.
I'm slowily getting used to how it works, but I'm certain that there is a menu of opions that I haven't yet found. For instance, I was able to list the lenses I use with it, but I can't find a way to select one as the one currently on the camera. I couldn't find it in the manual.

I can see Oregon and Washington's dry side from here. The trees gradually diminish, and what is left after The Dalles is mostly grasses and rolling hills intermixed with rugged cliffs.
I love living in Oregon. It's a photographer's dream.
