Thomas Hillier GREEN senior’s obituary:

Star , Issue 6968, 24 September 1890, Page 1

MR T. H. GREEN,

A notice appears in another column stating that Mr Thomas H. Green, aged fifty-two, has departed this life. Mr Green had been ailing for over six months from heart disease. Mr Green is one of Canterbury's pioneers, and, moreover, one of the right sort— a man full of energy and determination. Bred and born in the midst of agricultural operations in England, he saw an opportunity on arrival in Canterbury of starting a pork butchering business in Christchurch, which he carried on with satisfactory results for some years. A few years later Mr Green saw an opening for the increase of this business by exporting to the neighbouring Colonies, and he built a large curing establishment in Manchester street. There he carried on business on a large scale, and the name of Canterbury hams and bacon became well known in the Australian Colonies. He then built a large block of buildings on the frontage of the section and conducted the curing at the back. When the Islington Factory was mooted, Mr Green threw in hip lot with the promoters, and it is needless to say his energetic business habits have still further increased the demand for the Company's product. He leaves a widow and grown up family, chiefly sons. Mr Green's funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon. [2]

Thomas Hillier GREEN junior – Suicide in London [son of Thomas Hillier Green mentioned above].

Press, Volume L, Issue 8427, 9 March 1893, Page 3

“With reference to the announcement of the sad death of Mr Thos. Hillier Green, which was received by cable yesterday, we may mention that he was well known in Christchurch, he being the fourth son of the late Mr T. H. Green. Some few years ago he went to England to study medicine at the London University, and that fee was making good progress was evidenced by a letter written to his relatives in January in which he spoke in glowing terms of the bright prospects before him. On Saturday last his brother received a cable message stating that he was suffering from Smallpox, and there can be no doubt whatever but that his death was attributable to delirium developed by that dreadful disease. Mr Green was a young man of great promise. He gained a Government scholarship when he was eleven years of age, and two others before he was fourteen. At sixteen years of age he won the Gillies scholarship at Auckland, and took his B.A. degree during the currency of this scholarship. He was a senior University scholarship and gained his M.A. degree with first-class honours before he was twenty years of age. He went to England and matriculated at the London University, and passed his preliminary examination in science. At that examination he was the only student from the whole of the London Hospital that obtained honours. Since then he has passed every examination, and according to his last, expected, in a month or two, to qualify for his medical degree. He was twenty-three years of age, and was a great favourite among all who knew him. His unexpected death was a sad blow to his sorrowing relatives, and much sympathy is felt for them in their distress.”
