Scots Pines [Pinus sylvestris]

Taken on a wee drive, yesterday.

It was a beautiful day, yesterday, but I was missing it! I had been in my study since around 5:30am, grading students’ work and setting up online lessons for the day. So mad! After my last online class, I decided to drive around behind the house and go for a wee walk. It was wonderful...not a soul in sight and only the birdies for company. I was...singing!

Travel Destination :: White Sands National Monument

Idyllic, Awe-Inspiring, Breathtaking, Speechless, Silence, Mind-Boggling, Overwhelming, Wondrous - all appropriate words for The white sand dunes of Southern New Mexico.

Rising unexpectedly out of the otherwise drab brown Chihuahuan Desert, the white dunes are the largest of their kind anywhere in the world. Yes, White Sands National Monument is huge. The gypsum sand dunes derive from Lake Lucero near the base of the Organ Mountains. Rainfall drains from the mountains into the lake. When the water evaporates the gypsum forms, dries, then blows to create the dunes.

Constant winds blow off the Organs shift the sands day to day so the dunes are ever changing. You'll never find two the same nor will the sand dunes ever stay the same.

The sand at White Sands National Monument is almost pure gypsum. Gypsum is different from many other rocks because it is readily soluble. That means it will dissolve in water, just like sugar or salt. When rain falls on the mountains, the layers of gypsum start to dissolve, and the gypsum runs down the mountains as fast as the water can carry it. You may wonder why there aren't gypsum sand dunes on the other sides of the mountains. The rain certainly washes gypsum down there too. Why is it only in the Tularosa Basin that the gypsum forms sand dunes?

The Tularosa basin has no rivers running out of it. There is no way for water entering it to get out.

i love the details in ordinary life. little things that magnify beauty and joy. saturday morning was soggy and gray. i felt blah. yet i saw big rain drops on leaves of my canna-lily plant. i stepped outside (just to the front stoop) and took this photograph. and in that process, my heart felt lighter.

Mont Saint Michel is a small rocky islet, roughly one kilometer from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River, near Avranches in Normandy, close to the border of Brittany. It is home to the unusual Benedictine Abbey Church (built between the 11th and 16th centuries) which occupies most of the one kilometer diameter clump of rocks jutting out of the ocean.

It is connected to the mainland via a thin natural land bridge, which before modernization was covered at high tide, and revealed at low tide. Thus, Mont Saint Michel gained a mystical quality, being an island half the time, and being attached to land the other : a tidal island.

In 708 the Archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, and commanded him to build a chapel on the top of Mont Tombe, a rocky island in the middle of an immense bay. Overawed by this apparition, Aubert obeyed and built a sanctuary to the glory of God and Archangel Michael.

Throughout its long history, Mont Saint Michel has had many roles. First a religious sanctuary with its monastic communities, it became a place of worship with its immense pilgrimages, a centre of intense academic activity with its production of manuscripts and illuminations, a symbol of national resistance with the glorious feats of arms of its knights and a formidable prison when the priests were ousted in the French Revolution of 1789, putting an end to the religious vocation of Mont Saint Michel.

Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.

Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!

First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.

** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

Digital Photo Magazine Interview

"Venice :: How I Got The Shot"

How long have you been taking pictures?

I’ve been taking photos for as long as I remember. I've always had a camera tho' I began taking photographs professionally in 2005.

What's your favourite kind of photography, and does this image fit into it?

Typically, I gravitate toward night photography, reflections, and motion. When there is opportunity to combine the three, all the better. Venice provides sublime opportunities for reflection photography, especially at night. Too, many of my urban shots tend to be void of people which reflects the quiet I strive to find in every day life.

Tell us about what made you want to shoot this particular picture?

This particular scene attracted my eye not only for its reflection, but also for the long lines leading to a vanishing point, which allows a viewer to be drawn into the image. Additionally, the “super moon” was illuminating the sky offering a beautiful blue hue to the sky and adding a bit of extra natural light.

What equipment did you use to capture the shot - type of camera, lens, tripod, etc?

A Canon 5D Mark IV with a 18mm wide angle Carl Zeiss lens was used to capture this photograph. Rarely, while travelling, do I use a proper tripod. The camera was steadily planted on a pavement stone at the edge of the canal.

Venice Italy is pure magic. This is Venice and magic is what I tell everyone who asks me for travel advice.

Consider nearly 400 ancient bridges to cross, tall campaniles defining the city's skyline, stone walkways, 150 canals, 139 churches, a myriad of fascinating museums, St Mark's Square and Italian gelato that will satisfy your tastebuds as you meander your way through the timeless islands.

There are no cars in Venice. The roads are indeed the city's canals and if you want to be transported, your only choices are the iconic gondolas, private water taxis and public waterbus which is the vaporetto. If you're lucky, Venice will experience a mild Acqua Alta while you're in St. Mark's Square as there's nothing quite like it.

You might feel as if you're on a movie set as Venice doesn't seem real at first tho' the city is indeed a living breathing real place where people live and work. Be respectful as tensions toward tourists run a bit high these days.

Be prepared to think you're lost but also be prepared to throw away your map as a map will only frustrate you. Meander your way through the narrow alleys and simply be pleasantly surprised when you reach one of the public squares where you're sure to find shops and cafes.

Venice is splendid to discover. Take your time and take it all in. The city is pure sensory overload.

Travel Destination :: Himalaya Mountains In Bhutan

I had no expectations travelling to Bhutan. I knew the architecture would leave me speechless. The people I imagined would be nice. In fact, the Bhutanese are beyond incredible and I love that they love quiet.

It was not until I was high in the Himalayas that I found heaven on earth. There are mountains, which are majestic in many ways, and then there are the Himalayas. Only here can you stand higher than you've ever been on earth and touch the clouds without reaching high above your head.

On the verge of tears, I stood in awe as the clouds rolled in swirling around my head. The fog engulfed my entire body making it near impossible to see a foot in front of me. If it is possible to have a spiritual moment with nature, this was it.

Travelling within Bhutan west to east there is no choice but to negotiate a variety of mountain passes. Do beware. There are few straight roads (as in none) and there might be more bumps than your accustomed to. Bumps and curves are all part of the adventure. The beauty that awaits you at the top of the world surpasses how you get there.

For an experience of a lifetime, add Bhutan to your travel destination list. The memories and stories you'll collect will last a lifetime.

The Tourism Council of Bhutan states this about the environment ::

Bhutan pristine environment, with high rugged mountains and deep valleys, offers ecosystems that are both rich and diverse. Recognizing

Photographer Mark Paulda visited a country that rejects Western values and where few ever visit. And when he returns to Bhutan in June, he’s bringing eight more cameras with him. Paulda was intent on showcasing the beauty, heritage and lush landscapes of this pristine country nestled between China and India in the rugged terrain of the eastern Himalayas—a country whose average annual household income is a mere $1,800 but measures its prosperity through a Gross National Happiness Index. It wasn’t until he made an unlikely friend that Paulda realized he needed to expand his photo project beyond his own viewfinder. After all, who better to reveal the mysterious world of Bhutan, than the Bhutanese themselves?

There is such an innocence to the people we don’t see in the western world. We’ve lost it—a genuine kindness that we have to look for because we put up boundaries and guards. To find this untainted world and experience that with the people, it really moved me,” said Paulda.

The government of Bhutan didn’t allow television or internet access until 1999, it is a region completely void of commercialization, banning franchises and international advertising. It is one of unique simplicity allowing for its citizens to sustain a traditional lifestyle. Bhutan limits tourism to preserve the culture and maintain its purity, which is a reason why Paulda journeyed there last year. He wanted to observe the intimacy one could have with its people, their traditions and way of life.

When defining the Underground

You might list some statistics,

You might mention 249 miles of track,

or 1.1 billion who ride,

You might ride up the 426 escalators,

and then back down again,

You might stay on one Tube train,

traveling 114 thousand miles one year,

Might even mention the lifts,

totaling 164 in all,

or that there are 270 stations served,

260 stations managed,

and 19,000 who help you manage

When defining London’s Underground,

it seems a traveler’s anthem has been

a moan, and a groan,

and maybe that’s where they are

At the oft’ signal failure,

it’s true

Being packed like sardines at the peak of the day,

but when defining London’s Underground,

don’t forget to mention nearly 2.7 million journeys

each, and every day.

The trains whiz by, and oftentimes screech,

they jump, they jolt on many miles of track,

but all 4,134 get you to the spot

where you wish to be

And, yes,

Waterloo is busiest in the a.m.

when 57 thou’ hop on, and go,

though nearly 82 million

use it each year making it the liveliest of the lot.

Though the Circle Line is said to be torture

going slowly round, and round,

The network goes under only 40%

while the rest is on top of the ground,

And, 29 stations placed south of the Thames,

really not very many at all

Regent’s Park,

Hyde Park Corner,

Bank, then Piccadilly

have no buildings to mark their spot.

This post is when and where I talk about laundry.

If it weren't for my laundry and walking to Pimlico Launderette, I wouldn't have a reason to walk along Ebury Bridge Road even though it's near where I live.

The first time I viewed this scene I stopped and watched in awe. No doubt my eyes opened super wide. There she was. A derelict Battersea Power Station standing in the background of a myriad of rail tracks. The constant flow of trains arriving at and from Victoria Station simply add to a classic London scene. The trains are modern but this scene could easily be one from the early 1900's.

I rushed to the launderette, dropped off my laundry, then rushed to Ebury Street to pick up my camera before returning to this very spot. I didn't want to budge away from it.

Both trains and Battersea Power Station are fascinations of mine. Now the two married and I couldn't get enough. From that day until the major redevelopment of the Battersea began this was my favourite view with my camera. No telling how many photographs of mine there are from this very spot - both day and night. There's no doubt there are hundreds of images from this view at Ebury Bridge Road.

Today, Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms are undergoing a major, major facelift. I'm pleased to know the power station will remain for many years to come. For me, it's a symbol of London and her early might and a time none of us should forget. The development around the area I'm not too fond of.

Called the Queen of the Adriatic, Venice has a setting that no other city in the world can rival. It is a network of rii (streams), canali (canals) calli (streets) and campi (squares). The richness and charm of Venice does not derive solely from the presence of significant works of architecture and art (Bellini, Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Palladio, Sansovino, and many others) but also from the general layout of the city and its way of life. “The rules change in Venice,” I’m told by Janys Hyde, long-time Venice resident and friend. For me, Venice is pure magic. In some ways the city is like a movie set tho' it's not fair to minimize Venice to make believe.

Venice is unique among all great cities of the world in that its streets are full of water. Made up of 118 islands only two to four feet above sea level, crisscrossed by 117 canals, and connected by some 360 bridges, its main avenue is the curving Grand Canal, its buses are the vaporetti. There is no other city in the world of this size and sophistication where the automobile is absent. With no better way to explain, Venice is all about the water. Janys tells me “when furniture is delivered to your home, it’s done by boat or when an ambulance is called it arrives on the water. To truly understand and ‘get in touch with Venice’ one must embrace the water.” Embrace I did, and instantly, feeling a sigh of relief from the usual bells, pollution and whistles of the big city.

Waterloo Bridge always appears low to me. Maybe this is because looking from Golden Jubilee Bridge I am higher. Perhaps this is simply an illusion, or the heavy looking stone used to construct the bridge. All that nonsense said, simply being on Waterloo Bridge is a feast for the senses and one of the best things in London to do.

If you want the best views in London, make your way to Waterloo Bridge.

On Waterloo, you will get the sounds of London's iconic double-decker buses roaring by. The buses will pass one after another in both directions. You'll also see and hear the riverboats rumbling up and down the River Thames. During the day, and especially during rush hour, hordes of people walk in both directions on the bridge. There are wide walkways on either side of the bridge.

Waterloo Bridge connects the Westend with the Southbank, and it is widely used by both walkers and vehicles.

What is there not to see from this bridge? Waterloo Bridge isn't the prettiest in London, though this is one of the best places to photograph London, and either side of the bridge offers remarkable views. It is safe to say you could spend a few hours walking north to south, south to north, stopping every few yards for a photo opportunity. Even if you are not interested in photography, you will want to walk across the bridge and take in the sights. Put your creative mind to work and put yourself on Waterloo Bridge when Claude Monet painted it from his room at the Savoy Hotel.

Train A442 makes its way down the final few miles of the Three Hills subdivision with what is one of the weirdest consists I've seen on this line.

May 2020 was a really interesting time; online classes were in full swing and marks were frozen to whatever they were pre-COVID. These two things rendered school, for all practical purposes, completely optional. (Provided you were passing beforehand!) For the most part I did still attend except for this day since, unfortunately, my internet inexplicably went out leaving me with nothing else to do but go and shoot the Three Hills where there was, completely unbeknownst to me, a C44-9WL heading south. To this day I am still terribly upset that I was unable to attend the PowerPoint presentation on demand side economics.

I have always wanted to learn to be more artistic and draw, paint, doodle, anything to help me see light and shadow better. Also, I want to learn to code and have signed up for an online class to learn Python. I've decided that I need to stop working on my photo project to start opening up time to other areas of interest. It's not clear to me yet if giving it up completely will work because so I am not ready to stop cold turkey after almost 9 years but maybe I should just phone it in for a bit.

The grandest view of St. Paul's Cathedral is achieved while walking atop the Millennium Bridge from Tate Modern. I often call the bridge the "Path to St Paul's"; it is simply stunning at all times during the day.

The Millennium is the newest edition of bridges in Central London and well worth the journey across in either direction. It links St. Paul's Cathedral to Bankside and the Tate Modern Museum. I highly recommend exploring St Paul's, the Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern Museum from all possible perspectives. This area is one of the most interesting for visitors and photographers alike.

The Millennium Bridge is a 330m steel bridge and the first pedestrian crossing over the Thames in central London for more than a century. The bridge opened in time for the first year of the new Millennium though closed when the deck swayed like a drunken sailor. The bridge was instantly renamed as "The Wobbly Bridge," and after two days of random swaying, swinging and oscillating wildly, the bridge was closed down.

After nearly two years of testing, alterations corrected the issues and the bridge reopened to the public in February 2002 - the swaying stopped. After all the excitement of its rocky birth, the bridge is now a valuable asset to London, appreciated by Londoners and tourists alike. The Millennium Bridge is a worthy addition to London's riverside and well worth a visit.

Try walking across the bridge at night when there are few people around.

Five minutes after arriving on the main island of Venice I thought I was lost. In fact, I wondered if I'd find my way anywhere much less back to the hotel. The myriad of bridges over canals, the narrow alleys twisted, turned and led me around far too many corners then confused my sense of direction. I kept walking and picking out landmarks though there was no guarantee I'd return the same way.

Eventually, I arrived at St Mark's Square and this is when my heart melted. I fell in love. My love affair with Venice continues today and I've visited countless times. I still get turned around every so often though my heart doesn't race like that first time. Moving forward always lands me at or near the place I want to be.

My Best Suggestions To Discover The Magic of Venice ::

:: Take a water taxi from the airport to your hotel in Venice.

:: Take a vaporetto to San Giorgio then look back at the main island of Venice in awe.

:: Let out a deep sigh when you see the Bridge of Sighs

:: You'll think you're lost, but you're never lost in Venice. Toss your map and explore.

:: Be a tourist and go to the top of the Campanile in St Mark's Square. The view will astound you. If you're lucky you'll hear the bells of the Campanile up close and personal. They are gloriously loud.

As I write this Hong Kong is experiencing a bit of turmoil. The photos of protestors I see are quite striking and a reminder that when one's freedom is taken away, trouble is not far behind. But for me, this is Hong Kong. The city is filled with spirited people who are not afraid to stand up and be heard. While Communist China will ultimately win, perhaps positive changes can be made tho' I'm cynical to believe freedom will win.

That said, Hong Kong is a vibrant and vigorous city that rivals New York City with it tall and massive skyscrapers. It is easy to feel dwarfed walking along the streets. You might even feel as if you're in a deep hole as natural light seems so far in the distance. If you reach your hand toward the sky, perhaps you'll touch the light tho' you never seem to touch the light.

I've spent a relatively short amount of time in Hong Kong as the city is always a stopover as I travel to/from Bali. Sometime I'd like to spend an extended period of time in Hong Kong to touch the soul of the city. I want to know all of its curves, quirks, tastes and sounds. Up to now I've experienced the top tourist things to do and this isn't quite so satisfying for me. It's almost as if I've only seen the superficial while I know there is a heart and soul to the city.

As you can view in the video presentation in this blog post, I can only recommend the Star Ferry Harbour Tour, the Tram and Tramoramic Golden Ticket Tour and Temple Street Night Market.

I write extensively throughout this blog about Bali. It would be easy to say - This is Bali, but there are so many sides to the "Island of Gods". If you prefer Bali is also "Paradise Island". How your refer to Bali all depends on why you visit. If you travel to Bali with an open mind and open heart, it is quite possible to have a travel experience you never expected and even an experience of a lifetime. In other words, you can have everything Bali has to offer.

Bali is beaches, beach resorts and the vast Indian Ocean that can sometimes be unforgiving. Bali is sacred temples, some of which date back seven hundred years. Bali is some sort of ceremony every day of the week. Bali is the jungle and the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud. Bali is creativity and the Balinese's openness to share. Bali is motorbikes zooming past you in rapid fire. Bali is lush green rice terraces and palm trees.

Bali is spicy food. Bali is the great sense of humor of the Balinese. Bali is friendly and welcoming. Bali is rich in tradition. Bali is Balinese Hinduism. Bali is winding roads through lush green tropical plants and foliage. Bali is peaceful and quiet. Bali is yoga and meditation. Bali is art. Bali is woodcarving and basket weaving. Bali is spiritual offerings to the gods.

Bali is anything you want it to be quite honestly. I think what you experience in Bali is entirely up to you.

The first time I visited I went on a whim.

Snow white and mysteriously beautiful, New Mexico’s White Sands National Park is the world’s largest gypsum dune field, with huge, wave-like dunes that constantly roll across some 275 square miles of desert in the Tularosa Basin. These pristine waves affect me more than any other place in this world. Here I am in awe of the dune’s ever-changing natural beauty. I like the notion of the blowing wind shifting the sands into different for-mations, as this reflects my own life. Not much ever remains the same for me over time, and I look forward to change.

White Sands touches deep within my soul, often serving as a healer—a place of solace, if you will. When life becomes hectic, the pure silence of the dunes provides calm, allowing my mind and spirit to become centered once again. There are no distractions, and what sometimes appears impossible in other surroundings reveals itself to be the opposite.

This is where I retreated to make some sort of sense of my father’s sudden passing at an all-too-young age, and where, saying goodbye one last time, I was able to let go. Only me, the dunes, and unfiltered thoughts of a man who worked so hard to give me so much. Too, after being diagnosed with a virus that will never leave my body, it was the white sands I kicked, pounded, yelled at, then cried over from fear and disappointment.

Can you imagine viewing London with no people?

When I set out to photograph London at night, my main goal was to capture the city, one of the most populated in the world, empty. That's right. I aimed to have no people in the photographs. One would think this would be a challenging task, though it really hasn't been. The real challenge is London's rapidly changing skyline.

I would photograph an area around the Square Mile, then need to return as an omission of a particular new building would have been too obvious. The Shard is a prime example. There are super images captured from Tower Bridge in my London photo library, but The Shard is either non-existent or in various stages of construction. Needless to say, the photos ended up on the "cutting room floor."

Well, Hello Shard! Hello Walkie Talkie! Hello Cheesegrater! Your emergence created issues and slowed the progress of my project. I had to return to your area more times than once. This is not a complaint. I love capturing London with my camera, but the changes have been more obvious to me and I tend to be a perfectionist. My goal to get it right makes me return over and over again.

All that said, with a diversion, London at night is simply beautiful. When the lights come on the city shines gloriously, and seems to be a bit more stately, or grand. What is missed during the day, stands out at night almost demanding due attention.

How many photos or selfies have you seen of someone walking into or out of a London's iconic red phone box? Except for the obligatory photo in front of Big Ben, the red phone box photo might rank near the top of "the photos I must take while I'm in London." Right?

Where has the London Red Call Box gone? Mobile phones have killed off this icon of London. Dotted throughout the London, however, are functional call boxes. They may still be, but I remember these were a popular advertising point for "massage therapists" and girls of the night. Imagine this wet behind the ears wee photographer seeing this for the first time!

Where can you find the red call box today? Parliament Square, Piccadilly Street, Covent Garden, The Strand, Trafalgar Square all come to mind. There is more no doubt, but these areas I know for sure. If you want your photo coming out of one, like millions of other people, hunt them down.

I love the red call box with a combination of a little night photography. Surprising, right? If you want something unique to do in London, go in search of London's Red Call Box.

Some phone boxes are being repurposed today. You'll find them throughout London as public art, gardens, coffee shops and even a library. I've included a few images below, though, in a future blog post, I'll explore various creative ways London's icon is being used.

I am working on my old pictures. Last week I bought a Wacom tablet for post processing my pictures. It doesn’t work like a computer mouse, but it is ok. I need to post more pictures because I am doing nothing most of the time. I transfer to Sacramento State University this fall. I might take some online classes because of the virus. I might take some pictures when I am at home, but I am not good at that. Stay safe, and have a great day!

Toronto has declared a Snow Day today, closing all schools so that the City can clear the streets and open the side roads by clearing the snow with its large fleet of snow removal equipment . Yesterday schools were closed but online classes continued. Today is a real Snow Day. Yesterday some parents allowed the kids to forego remote learning and spend the day outdoors.

This is Iceland. An island with the wild North Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Norwegian Sea to the north. A place where you might sometimes think you're on a different planet. A country whose population is often dwarfed by the number of tourists who visit. Home to the friendliest people you'll ever meet. A small island with landscapes larger than life.

If you've never visited Iceland, drop everything and go now. Of all the countries I've visited around the world, Iceland is not only cool (and I'm not referring to the temperatures), but it ranks near the top of my most favourite places in the world. I've visited Iceland numerous times dating back well before it became a wildly popular destination. There were few hotel choices when I first visited. Today there are an abundance of hotels in the city centre of Rejkjavik.

Reyjavik alone is charming enough for you to know you've chosen the right travel destination. The city centre is relatively small and most definitely walkable. You'll find numerous bars, restaurants and shops and outdoor public spaces to sit back and watch Icelanders go by.

But it's the majestic landscape that will capture your heart and imagination. The mountains are glorious. The glaciers are enormous. There are plenty of tours that will take you to the top sights. Private guides will take you to places few others see. If you prefer to go on your own, rent a car.

By far, White Sands is my most favourite place in America. It's so surreal to be amongst the vast white dunes of gypsum sand. More than this, I hear each breath, footsteps mean something and White Sands is entirely peaceful. I've walked, hiked and slid down the massive dunes tho' the biggest thrill came when an Air Force pilot strapped me in his plane, took the door off and allowed me to literally hang out to photograph the landscape below. It might be said that these white sand dunes touch my soul.
