Beautiful spring blossoms in bloom in the pathway called Legends Way in Newark New Jersey at the Essex County Courthouse taken a few years back when I was going weekly for Essex County grand jury service. The former 13th Avenue in Newark by the Essex County Justice Center starting by the Essex County Hall of Records had been transformed into a red brick promenade in 2008 later given the name Legends Way. There are bronze plaques giving recognition to people who made significant contributions to Essex County such as MLB Hall of Famers, Yogi Berra, Larry Dolby, Monte Irvin and others such as Pearl Beatty, Kenneth Gibson and several others. During our stay in Hawaii with my west coast damsel, I would awaken early before sunrise so I could go out on the lenai to capture the sun as it rose over the eastern horizon, this is one of many images that I captured on multiple mornings during our stay with my west coast damsel’s sweet daughter and her husband who is without sounding cliche truly an officer and a gentleman. On exhibit at the James S. McDonnell Space Hanger at the Smithsonian Institution’s Air And Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly Virginia is the longest serving space orbiter the Discovery. The Discovery flew the most missions, 39 and was in service from 1984-2011. It flew 3 Hubble Telescope missions including the 1990 deployment and 2 service missions. It was the first space shuttle to dock at the International Space Station (ISS).

Spanning the deep canyon carved by the Bixby Creek that is 260 feet above its bottom is the Bixby Bridge on Highway 1 at Big Sur California. An aesthetically pleasing and picturesque reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge with thoughtful architecture in a very scenic location that opened in 1932 before the Highway 1 in the area was finished. In fact it would take 5 years after the bridge’s completion before the connection between Carmel and San Luis Obispo was completed. Truly a beautiful drive the Pacific Coast Highway. The marine layer that had literally followed us up the coast from San Simeon that morning can be seen in this image as it obscures the canyon and ocean in this image.

Delicate snow in Brookdale Park, Bloomfield New Jersey, something they really had not seen much of this year according to the news so obviously an older image that I did some final embellishing on. The older I get the more appreciative I am that my folks settled in the Northeast when they migrated from the Caribbean particularly because each year I marveled the beauty of the fact the area had four full seasons. Brookdale Park is 121 acre oasis which is part of the Essex County Park System, Essex County which is historically home to the America’s first park system. This park was designed by the famous Olmsted Brother Firm, yes of Central Park fame completed in 1937. This location was actually a meeting or gathering place for the Lenni Lanape Indians whose tribes gathered at the Indian Spring located near where the park’s rose garden is. Central Park’s Gapstow Bridge in the Spring, it has been featured on the silver screen so many time it’s as synonymous with New York City as the Empire State Building. What many people do not know is it’s not the original bridge in the original Fredrick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaud design. The original bridge was a wooden one that did not fare well, and this lovely stone bridge made of Manhattan schist takes park visitors over the pond.

The beautiful black sand beach of Richardson Beach Park in Hilo on the Big Island Hawaii, the amazing tides pools formed from the lava rock from the Kilauea Volcano that are alive with coral, barnacle, crabs and fish. The youngest of the islands that compose the state and once the nation of Hawaii which is the only island also with active volcanoes, the black sand on Hawaii Island comes from the lava that was spewed from the Big Island’s volcanos as the during eruptions. When a volcano erupts, the molten lava flows down eventually to the ocean and when coming in contact with the cool ocean water the lava rapidly cools and explodes. The new World Trade Center (WTC) Transportation Hub or Oculus is the design of Santiago Calatrava with an interior the exceeds the cavernous Grand Central Station on 42nd Street. The post 9-11 World Trade Center site is more of a cacophony of designs, whereas the original World Trade Center had a design theme. On the return trip from Oregon, my west coast damsel once crossing into California paused in town of Weed to get some image of the beautiful snow capped Mount Shasta. Ice capped Mount Shasta at 14,179 feet is actually a potentially active volcano that last erupted about 1250 AD according to geological observations. My damsel and I were perplexed by the amount of gulls which were in the vicinity which are normally seafarers at this elevation as Weed is at over 5,000 feet and no where near water. In this image of Mount Shasta the are a pair that flew into my field of view.

A classic piece of Americana, a true classic at this years Grass Valley Fly-In and Open House held at Nevada County Airport annually, as part of the event 3 different local auto organizations participated but this beautiful 1968 Pontiac Firebird was not amongst them but rather outside parked on the street, absolutely gorgeously restored, so I snapped a few frames. Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams were so interwoven into American culture that was epitomized in movies like Smokey and the Bandit and television series like Knight Rider both that featured black Trans Ams as a prominent part of their respective tales. Museum at Prairiefire colorful glass exterior as the dawning day bends the light. A museum a natural history melded with art and augmented reality that opened in Overland Park Kansas in 2014 boasts an unique stained glass exterior that is equally a visual fest for those of the photographic persuasion. Located on the north part the town Bloomfield New Jersey’s ‘Green’ is the historic landmark Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green, the original congregation being organized in 1796 and the church (and town) named after Revolutionary War hero, Major Joseph Bloomfield. Major Bloomfield had made a generous contribution to the congregation that helped to purchase lime required to finish the exterior of the temple before its first winter. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the church has actually been closed the better part of the last 12 years obviously prior to COVID-19 as the beautiful historic temple is in dire need of structural and cosmetic restoration. Construction on the sanctuary part of the building began in earnest in 1797 completed on that same year and served as the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomfield until 1966. The building is constructed of local Belleville brownstone (sandstone) and conforms to the popular Wren-Gibbs model used in most early American churches design by a member of the congregation Samuel Lawrence Ward. The church as stated earlier sits on the north edge of the green. A green was a characteristic feature of many Puritan towns in New England and obvious the early residents of Bloomfield. The beautiful 119 foot steeple that is clearly shown in this image was built in 1896, 99 years after the original temple opened to replace a much smaller steeple that was completed in 1819. The gorgeous steeple houses Westminster Chime in its second level, the top level originally for lanterns, the level below for the enormous clock face and finally a fourth level for a church bell. During the summer at Mel’s Diner in Auburn California, they have a weekly classic car gatherings. My damsel and I stopped at Mel’s last week for a bite to eat and lo and behold the classic beauties were there. Did not spend a great deal of time checking out the lovely automobiles but saw this gem, a 1956-57 first generation Chevrolet Corvette. Echinacea purpurea, the eastern purple coneflower at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village in New York City. The abundant chickens on the Hawai’ian Islands seemed to be even more abundant on the garden island Kauai. Chickens were introduced in the 1700’s when sugarcane farms were introduced to the islands, chickens were part of the package. When the sugar industry departed for the most part chickens were left to fend for themselves which they did rather well with no natural predators on the isolated Hawai’ian Islands. On the very rural garden island of Kauai apparently more so. This couple on Wailua Beach followed me as I snapped away images of the water & beach. While at Donner Pass, I pivoted and got this lovely image of the sun over the snow covered terrain after my sweet damsel captured an image on her phone and inspired me to take this one. My sweet lady has an amazing eye for images. Founding father Alexander Hamilton was strong proponent of the economic need of industrial production in the fledgling 13 states as that was prohibited by English law in order to thrive and gain financial independence. Hamilton was first president George Washington’s Treasury Secretary and he co-founded the “Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures” or S.U.M. which was run by private interests & manufacturers with government support. In 1792 that entity acquired 700 acres of land above and below the Great Falls of the Passaic River and established Paterson, named after Governor Paterson who was an ardent supporter of Hamilton’s plan and signer of the S.U.M. charter in 1791. Now a National Park, commemorating the birth of industry in early history of the United States. One very frigid mid-west morning last month in Overland Park Kansas a co-worker who hails from Long Island ventured to the Prairiefire section of Overland Park to see and get some images of the Museum at Prairiefire, a beautiful museum with unique architecture that opened in 2014. It was cold but was glad we braved the elements as the Museum at Prairiefire did not disappoint. The stained glass gives the outside of the Museum a unique look and did not disappoint. A single horse munching on pasture on field in Jefferson Oregon at my west coast damsel’s family’s homestead. Jefferson is in the county of Marion, it was established around 1851 then known as Conser’s Ferry named after its founder Jacob S. Conser. A small community with a population just over 3,000.

California’s majestic and amazing Sierra Nevada Mountain Range which literally translated means snow covered mountains that for many would be gold prospector coming from back east was the last big obstacle to reach California Gold Country. My damsel and I venture up in elevation as while we were pelted by the atmospheric river in higher elevations that precipitation became snow. McPolin Barn on McPolin Farm just inside the city limits of Park City Utah. The barn is celebrating its 100th anniversary, as it was put together by the McPolin family back in 1922. When the McPolin family erected the barn they fitted Timbers from old tailings mill without the use of nails. Now owned by Park City it is the most photographed barn in Utah, it welcomes visitors to Park City and is a focal point off of state route 224 of the valley exiting off of Interstate 80. My damsel and I need to make it a point to visit the barn on our next journey out.

This is my 1000th post on Instagram and I’ve lost count on Flickr. April was Photography month in California, my sweet & thoughtful damsel discovered that our local Nevada County Camera Club was holding a series of photo walks in Nevada County as part of the celebration of Photography month, and we were able to join 2 of out 3 and in doing so I was introduced to NCCC. This image of California Highway 49 which intersects Nevada City, the county seat of Nevada County California, the heart of gold country, was taken on the Broad Street Bridge. Nevada City was incorporated in 1850, originally called Nevada which in Spanish means snow storm. Its name was changed to Nevada City after the territory to the east of Nevada absconded its name. Congress created the Nevada Territory in 1861 and in 1864 became the 36th state using the Nevada which the residents of the city of Nevada resented and added the City to distinguish themselves from the new state that ‘stole’ their name. The over the top Christmas lighting in Brooklyn neighborhood of Dyker Heights began in the 1980’s when a Ms Lucy Spata moved into Dyker Heights and decorated her house like her mother did, which was to basically light every corner of the house. Another image captured a few days back of the fog from our rear deck as it rose as the sun started to warm the water saturated trees and soil from the latest round of atmospheric rivers that have doused California relentlessly in 2023. The Wailua River and it’s Valley were considered sacred by the natives of Kauai, the lush fertile ground & soil of the Wailua basin yielded a wealth of crops as Kauai the northernmost of the Hawaiian islands is the wettest place on earth. The mountains in Kauai, particularly Mount Wai’ale’ale with its annual 450” of rain is generally considered the wettest on earth, it’s bountiful rainfall is what feeds the Wailua River, Hawaii’s largest navigable river. The morning of my departure back home out west walking through the new and very nicely done terminal B at New York’s La Guardia Airport, I stepped up the heating/cooling grates to eliminate some (not all) of the lighting reflections to capture the eastern sky as the sun rose. The Paterson Great Falls, a part of the United States National Parks, where a visionary Alexander Hamilton once stood and visualize a new nation that would be a producer not a consumer as British rule had basically forbidden any significant manufacturing in the original 13 colonies. Paterson was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and now the vestiges of this history are being preserved by the National Park Service and the City of Paterson.
