Another more significant work that has been in the making along with the other reasonably big (this is 48"x48") pieces for upcoming show - "Maybe It's Jargon" - though I don't have exact dates yet, it is certainly shaping up to be the most developed and complex (from my POV I hate to use the term best - as the range of work from different periods have different qualities etc. but basically, yeah - it is a body of artworks representing chiefly works with layered (depth - so subtle but very real 3d sep. between many elements, parallax type qualities etc which are hard to convey online - but, apart from adding pretty massive extra material costs to each one and upping their weight considerably - around 20 kg for one this size - 4'x4').
In addition to the new use of resin across all the most major works - as much or more for the depth elements I am still experimenting a great deal with, other media in the mix include exotic synthetic substrates for die cut machine (thank you scrapbookers!) i'm using a ton of irridescent, holographic, metallic specialty vinyls - very often with pigment inkjet layered right on top for individual elements - like mr hugo the robot in red :)
as mentioned before - acrylic paint markers (I love you molotow) have become a huge tool for me - really awesome. Then good old Golden, liquitex and tri-art acrylics and mediums - mix of digital and drawn/painted (often doing the loop through scanning altering printing altering scanning etc.... I've loved the interplay between the two for 20+ years now (damn i'm getting old) and it has only become more rewarding with tools available increasingly capable.
While I usually steer clear of talking too much about themes, topics, messages, etc... the dreaded 'what does it mean?' question :) but recently - thanks in great part to my obsession with audiobooks and diving deep into a wide range of topics (fiction too - Jerusalem by Alan Moore is serious contender for my top work of fiction period, ever... astounding. Also worked through all David Mitchell recently - the Bone Clocks especially I rather love).
The bulk of the 1000+ titles I've seared into my brain (the format is brilliant for me actually - more passive than reading yet more immersive - like books you are half of the experience, sans imagery mind and imagination I find are much more engaged. When produced well with one of the (like 20 - only so many genius voices out there that can handle i suspect non-stop recording with few mistakes to edit in a medium where 10 hrs is short - that new Alan Moore is 60 hours, epic and entirely worth it for anyone into Joyce, more innovative Sci-Fi weirdos - not hard sci-fi... yet its much more similar to David Mitchell and is really like some psychedelic post-post-modernist update of Joyce Ulyses).
OK, talk about getting sidetracked. sorry up for days here - tired and out of it... my original point was that a bunch of specific explorations in fairly technical areas like Douglas Hoffstader's Strange Loops... which he also describes as tangled hierarchies at times. Famously expounded in his masterwork "godel, escher, bach" . Consciousness and philosophy of mind broadly has been the core scope of my passionate interests - ranging from spiritual and theological (including occult, esoteric, hermetic etc - i blame my intrigue with concepts in here in particular that of 'the LOGOS' and Gnostic thought on Philip K Dick) through to the technology end of things - with current obsessions bordering on, well, theology and religion to be frank - the very Silicon Valley driven AI of various sorts, Kurzweil the high preist :) of the Singularity, a man who I have decidedly mixed feelings about at this point.
The whole internet / technology / transhumanism cluster of topics have evolved dramatically I must admit since the early work I am stil best known for - the Our Lady Peace 'Spiritual Machines' album art and 'In Repair' music video.
Observing the way in which the internet has progressed and evolved in time since - I've become rather more cynical and pessimistic probably more about the unavoidable human element than any technology. Especially when humans conceive of sophisticated ways to trick themselves into believing the human element (dragging along with it unique bias' a penchant toward corruption of various sorts, basically the folly our species has no lack of examples to draw on through the present moment. I find many things very scary yet very dull about what has become an essentially hyper-fictionalized, entertainment and spectacle style in everything from the art world to politics to pretty much everything. This is pure Baudrillard - the radical philosopher of media / society who is in many ways a successor to McLuhan - covers much ground but ideas / observations reflected in his term 'Simulacra' and similar 'symbol/value' ideas - for me how this seems all part and parcel with the fallout of Nietzsche's 'God is Dead' - setting aside questions as to god existing in typically conceived, or any other ways - I certainly feel that there is something so vital to our collective (western anyway) grounding in life that was lost along with assumption of faith. Secular modernity and the past century evidence to my mind that he was rather bang on in predictions of the demented mass war, collapse of values and (along with other freaks like Crowley) saw and clarified this new age of narcissism and progressive sort of madness of the self - when Crowley is so often quoted with 'do what thou hilst shall be the whole of the law' it says much about our times that we assume that obviously means debauchery, war and naughty behaviour all around! A more accurate reading is to suggest that you and only you are responsidble for doing what you will - to make your own choices based on you rising to the condition of life and meeting it without the crutches of the church or any other social norms to comfort and direct.
Of course most of us are about as close to living that type of truly self directed existence as one could get (though largely due to the evolution of corporatism and partner the pr industry - today so opaque and ubiquitous the influence upon most everyone is so sophisticated and hidden in plain sight that a large fear I have is that gradually the new cyber feudal elite - already the core of today's power and wealth - through mass media and the 'manufactured consent' of ed burneys and Noam Chompsky has moved online and found a landscape in which these essential and arguably even useful in some ways elements of capitalism / democracy (or whatever term better describes American condition) coming from 'public relations' and advertising - the consumer society as means to keep population chasing after the illusory dream (not so much of wealth and material abundance - though today that too is illusory, more and more for most people... but the happiness promised in that pursuit) .... i will tidy these thoughts and add much more in days coming to my blog and site - not pretty now but getting better - oligoldsmith.com and portfolio site oli.pics/
along with my social media ramble fests and art stuff I've made that is all simmering in a stew of those types of ideas and themes - with a heavy added dash of recursion... loops.... strange ones indeed.

one of several major new works - layered resin, holographic vinyl cuttings, graffiti paint markers and lots of new stuff (content and medium wise :-) going into these new ones... timewise too - this is one of the set of 4-6 pieces ive been working at and working out for about a year now - in that duel with self to grapple with that slippery notion of elevating the work.

this is a super preliminary preview (in motion) example of one of the directions I am playing around with where it comes to my re-entry into motion/animation etc. and this new 3.5d as I've been calling it style of spacially 'more and less' simultaneously or something.... or if you prefer for now i'll say:

i'm really especially excited to combine this kind of thing next with #element3d and my #3dscans - also glitchy weird spacial but actual 3d model data and contructing proper scenes in #aftereffects bringing both together in odd not quite right - in the same kinds of better than right :) ways - i've figured out not how to approach #vrvideo with mettle's very cool skybox plugin sets and think things are going to be getting very interesting here - need to rig up (well i should start with attempt to acquire :) an occulus rift headset or one of the other new ones that - very excitedly now that nvidia has cards with mac drivers again including new 12gb ridiculous gpu setup - i'm looking at i think being able to make my dreamed of dream environments from within the space itself :) these are things to help make me happy and i need those!

Port Hope, ON - where Oli lives and works at present - is explored through unique photographic, VR and digitally manipulated perspectives blending and evoking inner and outer realms, time, space and place.
The works are grounded in photography. As a medium I have admittedly some bias against I surprise myself in being tugged by intuition in this direction.
As my practice has developed over time I let go the 'conscious control reigns' further trusting in the process.
Crucial to my workflow is play and discovery. New technology and growing up while computers were likewise helped their use become my companion and muse in this spirit of experimentation.
I see the approach this takes as akin to a sort of oracle. As if throwing down stalks or flipping coins with the i ching, tossing images into digital programs in unintended ways (what not designed for) becomes for me a pseudo-random game and wordless dialogue with self.
From that dance between letting go of control (in a somewhat controlled manner) come the perturbations in process that keep the whole play of art-making alive and emerging.
While true of my work in general this new series of photo-based yet highly manipulated images is an ideal example of this aspect bringing about aesthetic surprises in my art making - resulting in new inspiration and artwork.
The series of work is being shown both in an October exhibition (details to come) and online. It's focus emerges from photos taken in Port Hope - utilizing recent vr and panoramic toolsets, cameras 3d scanners etc. Extending inside (my messy Post Hope studio and abode) and blending the public outer and private inner aspects of my own experience living here become themes inherent in the artwork.
As I find myself dusting off tools both old and new, digital and not, for creation of varied animation and video (much more varied types than the multiple formats for which this stuff was made, already then at least 4 or 5).
Right now I am exploring a medium and techniques that served me well (until the associated industries and paths it all led to disgusted my sense of dignity enough to swear off all but experimental VJ sessions and return totally to canvas and more traditional art making - I haven't regretted the decision for a moment)
The mediums of animation and broadcast design are no matter what a big part of my past and inform everything I do.
They also have - together with more flexible and exciting new new media flavors (from games and apps as art to virtual reality and variations of each).
Since the start of my deep dive into After Effects a depressing 20 years ago (aging is not agreeing with me one bit - very painful despite spiritual realizations that should cancel such things out -- but I digress, depression isn't anything new at this point in my life.... but I still have fight in me yet).
Animation and Video have stoked my creativity at best of times and indeed remains what I am probably best still known for - my 2000 multi-award winning animated Our Lady Peace Music Video for 'In Repair' ....
from animated gifs and web-micro loops, hero header website images and other web bits - even odd VR pseudospaces I am figuring out how to make and present)
I also realized I've never uploaded video to Flickr - silly really but that changes starting now.
this btw is circa I believe 2007? maybe 2009 (with a mix of work from 2000-2006 or so... ancient by now but it holds up pretty damn well I am proud to see :) ...
though I never got my youtube channel all that well fleshed out or well populated, you can see more of my work (you may have to search a bit to find copy of the olp video that works where you are - and moreso on the other best music video to my name - Richard X featuring Kelis 'finest dreams' video for the mashup track - awesome fun that was and was pretty solid hit in UK and Europe.
alright will return to this though likely on my own site - going through major overhaul right now. Much to share there in next days....

oli's demented and beastly quest to scramble up virtually the reality our species has projected without into the vastness we called reality.
until that sneaky artist oli goldsmith decided reality is nothing not to be wrongly basked in a baked alaska imbroglio process of ever emergent non-universality of what it is.
really though, this all is getting quite equally weird and wonderful - i haven't been dozing but recursively peddling the windmill of these strange loops and even stranger attractors.
now working on 360 (or 1290 degree) vr immersive web demo that will be sharing links to shortly.

to be very clear - as much as I have stirred up what I think are valid critiques as to the ineffectiveness of current politics in America and western democracy in general - mostly due to moral (and i suppose fiscal too) bankruptcy ... that is aligned with much of the public's lapdog nature in modes of participation on social media - as best iconized by that wonder of narcissism the #selfie, amongst other undercurrent of corruption, nihilism etc as the norm in too many spheres of life. Basically as I too often trumpet, what Nietzsche told us was coming - along with the rest of my favorite depressingly on the ball personal pantheon of philosopher types.
All that said I most certainly want Trump to lose - i'm not keen on watching this century play around at repeating the last in kind and he seems just the sort of loose cannon not needed - though his defeat won't change where we are, if he won I don't want to wonder where that might lead.

Experiments with depictions of 2016 American political leaders - Donald Trump primarily and Hillary Clinton by Artist Oli Goldsmith (oligoldsmith.com/). Most resulting images surround depicting Trump, via digital processing methods similar to 'PhotoMosaic' techniques - as groups of imagery scraped from the web relating to the #Selfie genre of self-portrait snapshot popularized on social media and Instagram.
Other images play with #Trump as #Clinton as #Trump - involving recursive levels of initially producing a selection of images of Clinton made of Trump images, then used as foundation to build new Trump representation.
I will for now at least leave any interpretation of imagery as far as implied meanings etc. to viewer.
I typically lean away from overtly political, heavy-handed 'i mean this you must know and should think so too if possible' messaging in my work.
