Lowry Bridge and IWMN, Salford Quays
Back to my old stomping ground and "batter the Quays" project! When sunsets don't materialise over the Quays nature sometimes takes pity and hands out a glorious blue hour instead... this was just such an evening.
I always feel long exposures seem to intensify the blues, which makes it look a little false so I've reined it back in a little bit in post-processing. Plenty of titles for this one but not the one I had in mind since the Lowry theatre doesn't feature in the shot, so I'll save that for a rainy day... no... a blue day!
Track of the day...
Mason Greenwood is 18 and there was an article about him in today's Times.
That shouldn't come as a surprise as there was an article about him in yesterday's Times, too. And the day before, and the day before that ... and ...
You get the picture. Mason may just be a special footballer.
Geoffrey Bent (27 September 1932 ā 6 February 1958)
Bent, 25, was killed in the Munich Air Disaster where the Manchester United plane crashed while returning to Manchester from a European Cup game in Belgrade.
When examined individually each death had a particular pain.
In Bent's case he was never intended to go with the squad. He was only called up at the last minute as cover for Roger Byrne who'd picked up a 'knock' during Saturday's game at Arsenal.
In the event Bent never got on the field of play.
The Flowers of Manchester
At four minutes past three on the sixth of February 1958 the plane carrying the Manchester United football team back to Manchester crashed at Munich Airport.
This tragedy is so profound and deep that, for many of us, it can never be forgotten. Each year on the sixth I try to post something.
Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord
And let perpetual light shine upon them
May they rest in peace, Amen
This was inspired by the thought of the ships that left Ireland for England ...
... the past is another country ...
Marcus Rashford
For those who don't know the story.
The government had decided to remove the free school meals for poor children over the summer holidays. (There are two sides to the rightness of this)
Marcus Rashford argued for humanity in the case of these children. His arguments were calm, measured and in using his own childhood's experience, persuasive.
He captured the popular mood and virtually everyone, apart from the government, could see the basic goodness in his case.
Soon the groundswell became unstoppable and the government performed a shuddering U turn - poor children will be fed this summer.
Rashford turned out to be more than simply a northern footballer.
Humanity.
George Best. Footballer. (22 May 1946 ā 25 November 2005)
Manchester United and Northern Ireland
He was the greatest footballer ever to be born in these football-mad islands. Sadly, his virtuosity was granted by the Gods with the parallel burden of alcoholism which rendered his football genius a tease.
In theory a loco-hauled Trans Pennine Express working should have passed this point today at roughly the same time today ... alas not to be.
This was the scene in January 1991 and 47635 has just passed the site of Throstle Nest Jct where the Midland Route from Manchester Central via Didsbury and Cheadle Heath to Derby and St Pancras via the Peak district came off. Also on the derelict land to the right was Cornbrook sidings and carriage shed.
Just above the loco on the other side of the Bridgewater Canal is the former Pomona Docks 1-4 on the Manchester Ship Canal.
Today the Metrolink Pomona station exists on an elevated section of track parallel to the canal.
* The last loco-hauled Trans Pennine working was seven days later 20/01/91.
* I do not know if it is still possible to do a 'before and after' shot here but will look into it.
A community centre / housing office / library building in Old Trafford, Manchester.
The blue layer at the top is the sky, the blue layer at the bottom is part of the building! The artwork that's been added was much bigger than this but this was my favourite piccie of it.
Salford Quays World..
"This is my world, and I am the World Leader Pretend
This is my life, and this is my time
I have been given the freedom to do as I see fit
It's high time I razed the walls that I've constructed" -- R.E.M (Stipe/Buck/Mills/Berry)
PP Summary: 5 Shot HDR images merged into a Panoramic image (so 15 individual raw files). That bit was done a couple of years ago. For the "world" effect I; duplicated parts of the image to ensure it would wrap around seamlessly, inverted it vertically, applied the Ps filter polar coordinates cube to polar and then added the lens flare with fade to white at the centre of the image. Lastly spent ages moving it around and touching up, still couldn't decide which one I liked better. HSS.
Old Trafford hates Glazer.
Manchester United supporters protest against the Glazer family's ownership of the club in the 4-0 win against AC Milan
Love United Hate Glazer
A snapshot taken with my phone this afternoon looking out from my office window in Old Trafford, Manchester. On the left side of the rainbow is MUFC's stadium and on the right side of the rainbow is Chester Road leading into city centre Manchester.
