Someone told us a story that they were used as ballast in ships coming into port, and dumped there when the ships loaded up with other good stuff. Eventually they were used to have the streets.

Given the location, angle of view, and overall perspective, this image looks a bit like a scale model--somewhat surrealistic.

The Spanish-speaking populous calls the cobblestones "adoquines". When they were made, part of their composition was iron furnace slag, which, with the passage of years, has turned blue.
