Amidst dense fog tonight, I captured this photograph of this historic barn nestled along the Lincoln Highway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg. Built in 1863 during the Civil War, this barn once belonged to Bill Putch and his wife, the renowned actress Jean Stapleton. Putch and Stapleton purchased the barn to serve as a storage facility for props and other items used in their productions at the Totem Pole Playhouse, which they owned. As a result, an advertisement for the Totem Pole Playhouse is prominently displayed on the barn’s front. Additionally, a Mail Pouch advertisement, which would have been added between 1891 and 1969 during the campaign’s active period, can also be seen, adding another interesting aspect to this structure. A few years ago, this barn was condemned, but fortunately, it is currently undergoing restoration.

Many beautiful photos on this beautiful ride. This one somehow I find even more evocative.

There’s the immediacy of this grand natural monument (part of an even grander one), and there’s the subsequent conquer of my vertigo —I did ride as far to the left of the lane as I could, and as short as this segment was, it felt much longer.

And yet it felt like a small accomplishment rewarded by a spectacular view and the joy of life 😊😍

Located on old Route 30 in Ortanna, the former Chambersburg Pike, was a tavern from 1795 until approximately 1872. When the Confederate army invaded Pennsylvania in 1862, they visited this tavern, and then again in 1863, as a portion of the Confederate army marched east on their way to Gettysburg.

Coming across the mountains from the west on July 1, 1863, Lee first heard the sounds of the battle a few miles ahead of him in front of the Cashtown Inn.
