The Se Cathedral is dedicated to St. Catherine, as it was on her feast day, 25th November 1510 that Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa. Believers are awe-struck to hear of the Cross of Miracles, which is placed in the cathedral, its earlier church having been destroyed. people have had a vision of Christ on this cross and the rock on which it was found was said to spout water while, today, the cross is slowly growing. Earlier, it was at Se Cathedral that the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier were shown to the public.

Old friends in an old photo clicked at Old Goa almost a decade before the first colour photography made its advent in Goa. Wonder if anyone recognises any of the faces except that of the towering figure at the top. Colour photography has outpaced B&W in Goa and the statue too is missing now.
One evening, we decided to head to the Divar island, just 2-odd kms from our home. Here, we are on the ferry to Divar, with a view of the island on the other side.

Goa was a Portuguese colony for many years. The rulers today understand that history attracts tourists. They preserve monuments like this one.
Sé Cathedral in Goa is 76 metres long and the largest church in Asia. It was constructed in the 16:th century by the Portuguese. Inside, there are 8 chapels and the artwork you can see here belongs to one of them.
Standing on Holy Hill (Monte Santo) is perhaps the most mournful memorial to Old Goa’s fallen might. All that’s left today of the Church of St Augustine is the 46m-high tower, which served as a belfry and formed part of the church’s facade. The few other remnants are choked with creepers and weeds, making picking your way among them rather difficult. The church was constructed in 1602 by Augustinian friars who had arrived in Old Goa in 1587 and was abandoned in 1835.
As Old Goa emptied due to a continual series of deadly epidemics, the church fell into neglect and the vault collapsed in 1842. In 1931 the facade and half the tower fell down, followed by more sections in 1938. The tower’s huge bell was moved in 1871 to the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panaji, where it can be seen (and heard) today.
We visited the Mangeshi Temple in Goa, India, on August 9, 2006.
Goa is home to many famous temples built around the 11th and 12 centuries. More info on this temple from their official website.
The title is just tongue-in-cheek -- the tower appears to lean because of an optical illusion. I had to lean the camera a bit from one corner of the temple compound to get the entire structure in the field of view.
We set out chasing the evening sun, but it dipped into the hills before we could get the secret lake that we often visit. Anyway, we did get a brilliant evening to enjoy.

Basilica of Bom Jesus
The Basilica of Bom Jesus or Basilica of Good Jesus (Portuguese: Basílica do Bom Jesus) is located in Goa, India is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is located in Old Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rule.
'Bom Jesus' (literally, 'Good (or Holy) Jesus') is the name used for the infant Jesus. The Jesuit church is India’s first Minor Basilica, and is considered as one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India.
Construction work on the church began in 1594 and was consecrated in May of 1605 by Archbishop, Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. This world heritage monument has emerged as a landmark in the history of Christianity. It contains the body of St. Francis Xavier; a very close friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Francis Xavier died on the Sancian island while enroute to Continental China (December 2, 1552).
The body of Francis Xavier was first taken to Malacca and two years later shipped back to Goa. It is said that the saint's body was as fresh as the day it was buried. The remains of the saint still attract a huge number of devotees (Christian and non-Christian alike) from all over the world, especially during the public viewing of his body every ten years (last held in 2004). The saint is said to have miraculous powers of healing, and pilgrims come from all over the country.
Capela da Nossa Senhora do Monte (Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount) located on a hillock near the Old Goa church complex. Providing a panoramic view of Old Goa, the Mandovi river, the islands of Divar and Chorao, Ribandar etc
The chapel was build in 1510 by Alfonso de Albuquerque after his victory over the Goan Muslim ruler Yusuf Shah and was renovated in 2001
The chapel of Our Lady of the Mount Mary is about 1.5 km from Gandhi Circle Old Goa.
Mass is held here on 8th of every month at 5pm (if 8th is Sunday then on Monday).

High on a hill just outside Old Goa is the abandoned church of Mount Mary; now nearly taken over by a lush jungle of wildflowers. In this impenetrable thicket one sees a large party of butterflies and birds. At the edge of the thicket was this beautiful wild morning glory.

St.Francis Xavier, referred to as "Goencho Saib" (Lord of Goa) by Goans, is the Patron Saint of Goa. The Feast of St. Francis Xavier is a feast held every year on the 3rd of December - the day he was buried - after nine days of prayer, called the Novena. The Feast of St. Francis Xavier hosts various ceremonies to honor the Saint's death. It assumed more significance this year due to the 16th Solemn Exposition of holy relics of the Saint from November 21 to January 2. The silver casket containing the remains of the Saint is kept at the Se Cathedral for the veneration and kissing of devotees since November 21
