Image from a couple years ago when I went camping in the Okefenokee Swamp. Well, I wasn't actually in the swamp....... well except when I took this shot. Oh well, you get the idea. It's cold in the ATL this week so I thought I would post a shot from warm weather.
A shallow steel hull with twice the height off the water is the standard method for tourists to explore the swamp and view alligators. However, rental canoes and kayaks are available with cautions to paddlers to avoid close encounters. We felt safe during our 2 hour, 5 mile paddle. The encounters were safe. To my knowledge, there has never been a fatal gator attack.

The Okefenokee Swamp is a shallow, 438,000 acre (1,770 km²), peat-filled wetland straddling the Georgia–Florida border in the United States. A majority of the swamp is protected by the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and the Okefenokee Wilderness. The Okefenokee Swamp is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. The Okefenokee is the largest "blackwater" swamp in North America.

Okefenokee is the Native word for "land of the trembling earth": the islands that form in the swamp, though strong enough to carry the weight of trees and animals, are said to tremble when one walks over them.
Due to drought conditions, the water, and with it the gators, had receded and on this day, the boardwalk was leading through woods rather than over the swamp.
