A beautiful day exploring the back roads and winter landscapes of Baker County Oregon near Keating.
A beautiful winter day for exploring the winding back roads of the Baker and Keating valleys with spectacular views of the Wallowa and Elk Horn Mountains.
I came across this small rural dam somewhere in northern Vietnam, tucked away in dense tropical vegetation. The water was pouring through the rusty floodgates with real force, and the blue sluice gate mechanisms on top created a striking contrast against the lush green backdrop and the weathered concrete and rust below. There's something captivating about these raw, functional structures slowly being reclaimed by nature. A little blue house with a red umbrella on the left completed the scene perfectly.

Bulnes é uma pequena aldeia situada no maciço central dos Picos de Europa, no concelho de Cabrales, nas Astúrias. É um lugar isolado e tranquilo, rodeado de montanhas impressionantes, como o Picu Urriellu ou Naranjo de Bulnes. Para chegar a Bulnes, só há duas opções: ir a pé por um trilho pedregoso que parte de Poncebos, ou usar o funicular subterrâneo que atravessa a rocha em 7 minutos.
Bulnes is a small village located in the central massif of the Picos de Europa, in the municipality of Cabrales in Asturias. It is a secluded and peaceful place, surrounded by impressive mountains such as the Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes. To get to Bulnes, there are only two options: walk along a stony path from Poncebos, or use the underground funicular that crosses the rock in 7 minutes.

I actually stepped into this barn to get out of the pesky wind and change lenses. I forgot about these wonderful old wagons. I have photographed parts of them in the past. Today (since I was there) I decided to go for a wide angle view of the entire barn interior and wagons. Metering the scene I found the view and light outside the barn through the door was a few stops above the interior light levels which offered up an opportunity to do some HDR work. I worked out this composition and fired off three shots 1.3 stops apart and merged them in a Lightrooom Plug-In.

In Luosto, there are many hiking trails to explore. We plan to hike to the top of the mountain. The summer trail to the top of Ukko-Luosto Fell - the highest peak in Luosto - starts from Luoston Portti. Initially, the route runs along the base of a ski slope to the Ukko-Luosto stairs. 575 wooden steps take you almost to the top of the waterfall. After the stairs, the path continues mostly as a gravel trail with some stone steps. From the top and the lookout point, you are rewarded with stunning views. There is also a weather station at the summit, a landmark visible from afar. If you return via the stairs to Luoston Portti, the total length of the trip is about 5 km. If you wish to follow the circular route of 6.5 km, continue north from the summit. This path leads you to the Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, a great place to pause and admire the view. You can also check out the small exhibition in the hut, Lightscapes of a Fell. From the scenic hut, the path descends as a gravel trail with some steep sections to the junction at Tikkalaavu, from where you can return to Luoston Portti. The duration of the summer trail is about 3-5 hours. As the name suggests, the summer trail is not suitable for winter. In winter, there is an avalanche risk on the route to the top of Ukko-Luosto, so the trail is closed for the safety of hikers. We'll have to come up with a different plan for our winter hike.
Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Unfortunately our walk could not go ahead due to avalanche danger. The snow profile, which describes the different layers of the snowpack, plays a crucial role in determining avalanche danger. If the snow layers do not bond well, weak layers can form, leading to avalanches. This can happen due to temperature fluctuations, which make the upper layers heavy and unstable. The terrain in Luosto, with its mountainous landscapes and steep slopes, is conducive to avalanche formation. Slopes between 30 and 45 degrees are the most prone to avalanches. Trails that run over or near these slopes, such as some routes to the top of Ukko-Luosto, can be especially risky. Local authorities and park managers take various precautions to protect hikers and skiers from avalanche danger. This includes closing hazardous trails, such as the summer trail to the top of Ukko-Luosto, during the winter months. The warning is provided in four languages: Finnish, Swedish, English, and Russian.
In Luosto zijn er veel wandelroutes te verkennen. Wij zijn van plan om naar de top van de berg te lopen. Het zomerpad naar de top van Ukko-Luosto Fell - de hoogste top van Luosto - begint bij Luoston Portti. Eerst loopt de route langs de voet van een skiroute naar de Ukko-Luosto-trappen. 575 met hout bedekte treden brengen je bijna naar de top van de waterval. We zullen dus iets anders moeten verzinnen voor onze winterwandeling. De waarschuwing staat in vier talen: Fins, Zweeds, Engels en Russisch.

Khndzoresk Cave Village is a historical site in the Syunik Province of Armenia, located near the town of Goris. The village consists of hundreds of man-made caves carved into the soft volcanic rock of a steep gorge. These caves were used as homes, schools, and churches, and the area was continuously inhabited until the 1950s, when residents were relocated to a new village built nearby. At its peak, the population of Old Khndzoresk was several thousand.

Spent a beautiful early summer day exploring small towns and century farms along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, one of three Oregon Scenic Byways that connect in Baker County. Baker County is home to more than two dozen Oregon Century Farms and Ranches and the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway and back roads along the way, are a great way to explore this working landscape of the American West.

Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep this trip and a napping Barn Owl
