As some of you know, Ive been working with Randy Holbrook for the past year doing some photography and helping him develop his website (www.randyholbrook.com). Its just about to undergo a bit of an update, but we've been waiting on the arrival of his new guitar that was being custom made for him by Southeast Guitars (www.southeastguitars.com). He just got it last month and this is the the first photo shoot of it.
Today is another day that has thrown me off my regular schedule so I am posting a sort of desperation picture. My daughter's first-grade class had their Christmas program today. They have been practicing for it for weeks. Of course, I teared up through it because every one of the things she does is the last time I will experience it as a mother. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been able to attend and help with these activities, my mother worked full time and never was able to participate. I was always so grateful that my grandparents came so I had someone in the audience for me, I sure hit the jackpot with them. Look around and see who is there for you and appreciate those people who show up and remember to be there for others, it makes a difference!

Not feeling very inspired today so I decided to just play with light and shadows. Working with the green theme for the 365 group combined with more black from Our Daily Challenge group.

It's a thin layer that separates most of us from light. Not just literal light... metaphorical light... burning or soothing light... spiritual light. I feel like I'm in the dark more often than I have any right to be. Whether I'm confused or confounded, perturbed or irrational, there's almost always some type of veil interfering with my reception. Like those codgers and imbeciles that adorn themselves with tin foil hats to deter being located by "grays". But I've been working to tear that layer from between myself and the outside. Bettering my intent, enlightening myself, opening myself to others in both confidence and empathy. Trying to educate myself and to get around to doing things that other people only ever talk about... to better my relationships with family, with my spouse, myself... with God. I simply don't want the barrier anymore. I see the light... it's piercing cascade of elucidation and warmth. I'd like to let it get to me without interference... real or imagined. It's warm and has purpose.
"I feel that life will never end where the heart lays in the dark ground
Where love leans like a crack in the heart... in the heart
I've seen all things rise to fall into dust
Into the flare that turns us pale..."

As if it weren't bad enough that the coronavirus was keeping everyone home, on Wednesday I found that someone had stolen my license plates. After some scrambling for information and worrying that I was really stranded while waiting for replacement plates, I learned that because my car is registered, I can still legally drive as long I have signs in my windows showing my plate number and saying they were stolen. Even so, the police may not be so informed, so I won't go out unless I really have to.

Been taking lots of photos lately, between my G10 and my 85mm and trips and grad and and and...life is busy. Lots to do, lots to remember, lots to learn. And the more I learn, the more I see how much I do not know. I find that totally exciting.
Days like today and yesterday, filled with the simple joys of friendship and kids and family are the best. I wish they happened more often, or stayed with me longer. I am trying to savour the richness of the little moments more these days. And ending my day down here is one of those...
Just blabbing, like in the old 365 days:).
Strobist: This was lit with one novatron light head using a standard reflector on a 400ws pack. The light is behine and below the glasses bouncing off a white seamless background. All edges were enhanced by black curtains I hung on either side of the shot. The glasses are on a long mirror.

Photo shoot for website update for Randy Holbrook, guitarist. Randy performs with Off Kilter, a Celtic rock band, at WDW's Epcot at the Canada Pavilion. Randy also performs in the Shamu Rocks! show at Sea World. www.randyholbrook.com.
The image breaks the rule of thirds, smashes it actually, but was done this way to allow for text in the perimeters and any cropping that might be necessary.

I don’t normally go for off-kilter photosm however I kind of like this.
It was one of the most interesting occurances of storm lighting I have ever seen. I had to capture what I could of it in my back yard. I have some color images too, but you can see how strange the lighting was even in this black and white picture. To me, that’s astounding.

Happy Furry Friday!
We really did luck out with good weather when on a vacation to Newfoundland last summer. This is Quidi Vidi Harbour - home of the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company and I must say, their Iceberg Beer is a great way to quench your thirst on a hot day.

Randy's new website was uploaded this morning and needs some test drivers. You guys have such great comments, I wonder if you wouldn't hop over and check it out and tell me what you think.
Oh yeah, there's music and video!
Looking this way and that, leaning forward and back,
sometimes you've got to be a bit off kilter
to make sure it's just right.

My routine has been out of balance for a few days as life keeps throwing me curve balls. I normally don't post images that are purposefully askew or out of balance but since that is how I feel right now that is what i am posting.

Its just about to undergo a bit of an update, but weve been waiting on the arrival of his new guitar that was being custom made for him by Southeast Guitars (www.southeastguitars.com). He just got it last week and here are the first pictures of it! The man who built it, Warren Parker, delivered it in person to Randy at the Off Kilter (www.offkilter.net) stage at the Canada Pavilion at Walt Disney Worlds Epcot!
It was quite a day thanks to the near monsoon we were having. The first 2 sets were called due to the downpour and we all got soaked, but when the music finally started - after the rain stopped - that guitar blasted off and never quit! I wish I had a music file to link to. It was amazing, and Randy was amazing, too! We will be adding music and video files to his website when the update is done.
For the guitar guys, heres what it has:
Ribbon Mahogany body
Bookmatched Waterfall Bubinga veneer top
Neck: Flame maple with ebony fret board
EMG 89 Humbucker pick-ups
Kahler tremolo bridge
EMG EQ system and pre-amp with a custom designed on/off bypass that can act as a preset
18 volt system
Sculpted front and back
Scoop on the lower horn
2 push/pull volume knobs that split the coils on the pick-ups
24 scale
24 frets with RH inlaid in mother-of-pearl on the 12th fret
GHS Custom Shop strings
Floyd Rose locking nut
Clear coat by Mean Street

She's a sexy and temperamental lady, but he can coax the best from her. He's known her for more than 30 years...It hasn't all been smooth sailing, but they've stuck together. She was even stolen once and abused, but ultimately she returned to him. And there have been interlopers; shinier, newer, eager - but none better; none more loyal; none more perfectly suited to his particular style.

...that's just how it works, isn't it.
Out with JW today for a walk and photogab (I shot, he didn't but, loved the walk none-the less... the light was pretty crap) and post-coffee. I peppered him with questions and he smiled and related his knowledge... he even payed for the java. Now if that ain't something to be thankful for, I don't know what is... thank you Bill!

Perhaps I spent my A game at North Beach on New Year's Day, because when I started reviewing my shots from today, nothing really stood out for me. Is it that I am overly self critical? I don't think so. I usually know when I'm on and when I'm off. I really thought that I was 'on' with my comps as I reviewed my LCD today, but, alas, the 27" tells no lies. This was one of my better shots from today.
