Comptroller Franchot toured Fort Worthington Elementary/Middle School on September 19, 2017. It was the first facility replaced in Baltimore City as part of the 21st Century School Buildings Program. As a member of the Board of Public Works, the Comptroller approved $37 million for the school. Construction was completed on time and on budget, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in August.
The 21st Century School Buildings Program is a partnership between the State of Maryland, the Maryland Stadium Authority, the Baltimore City Public School System and the City of Baltimore. It has dedicated $1.1 billion toward the renovation or reconstruction of at least 23 city school buildings within the next decade. The initiative aims to modernize learning facilities throughout the City, many of which suffer from unreliable heating and cooling systems, antiquated amenities and unsafe drinking water.

Two shafts were completed in 1911 at a depth of 512 yards, it was well known for the very rich Blackvein seam, which in places reached a thickness of 18 feet. Employed 439 in 1945, nationalised in 1947, closed 1967"
