In need of a more prominent local presence, the organization which supports the architecture profession in the State, AIA California (AIACA), moved their offices to a Midtown building which was once occupied by architect Ralph Vitiello’s practice. Originally built in the 1930’s, the existing brick building has tremendous character with concrete floors and exposed wood trusses.
As each client is unique in what they do and how they work, we embedded ourselves in AIACA’s work environment to understand how their new space needed to function and feel. Through a series of benchmarking tours, ideation charrettes and sketch sessions we designed a space tailored to their organizational needs which includes neighborhoods and spaces supportive of different work modes, as well as areas encouraging collaboration. A variety of conference spaces also allow flexibility for meetings, events and focused work when necessary.
On the exterior an entry portal addresses the street and creates a prominent entrance into the new space. Other features include a curated library where books featuring California architects and designers will be displayed. A “big table” serves as the staff break area and also a pre-function space for events and AIA Executive Committee meetings. This public side can be closed off through a series of full height sliding doors, providing privacy for the staff offices.
This new space better serves the AIACA as they continue their mission for California architects.
Cheltenham Borough Council largely occupy this "great terrace the equal to any in Europe". Construction is believed to have begun around 1822 and completed in 1835. Stuccoed, sixty three bays long, three storeys plus basement and attic. The central fifteen bays are highlighted with giant fluted Ionic pilasters, the first floor windows in round-headed recesses with a continuous wrought iron balcony.
The Olympic Theater was built as a Sokol Slavsky Community Organization for the Czech population. Cicero had a growing Czech population and the Olympic had an auditorium, ballroom, gym, and pool. It was very popular for a long time and even into the mid 90's the Olympic would show movies and shows. It closed for a few years in the late 90's but opened again for concerts and plays. Sadly a small roof fire occurred in 2018 and it has not opened since. The fire damaged a restaurant, offices, a dental office and the Olympic Theater
Completed in approximately 1835, Cheltenham's municipal offices are regarded as an example of fine Regency architecture. Over sixty three-storey Regency houses lie behind the facade that extends almost the entire length of the Promenade. The central five houses were converted into the municipal offices in 1913-15.
The statue is of Cheltenham born explorer Edward Wilson, a member of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition.

Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Plano hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically -?
So, after seven and half years, I left my job at NYU! This was my office on the top floor of a row house on Washington Square North. Awesome building. Weird little office. However, it was special in its own way. It looks so sad here with nothing but files in it :(
