That's it I'm finally going off grid, the price of living has gone out of the roof, literally. The roof needs some work, the plumbing needs sorting with that outdoor toilet! Just me and the birds and the odd arctic fox. I should have this place ship shape in no time
The truth, this is Slimbridge in Gloucestershire, which is a wetland centre for birds.
That's what the sign said. So I took the road. Beautiful river, beautiful country. Selway River, Nez Perce National Forest. Kooskia, Idaho USA
While I would like to go off-grid occasionally it is alot of work. But here are some of the pre-requisites: Wilderness, solar hot water, solar power and a solar wind vent. And for the cold weather a fire!!
I feel we could be doing a lot more with having this stuff on each of our homes and apartment buildings to reduce our coal fired energy needs and help the environment recover!
I have had solar hot water for 25 years, solar power for 10 years and the vent also for about 10 years. Next in line is a battery and an electric/hybrid car plus an expansion of the solar PV!
Cheatgrass was our nemesis on this trip. It’s an invasive weed with barbed, pointy tips that have an uncanny ability to embed themselves in a dog's fur, skin, and even creep into their ears, eyes, or respiratory systems. It was in full bloom during our visit. So were the butterflies.

About half a days hike from Havasu Falls Campground, Beaver Falls is a stunning spot with multiple cascading pools you can dip into for a refreshing swim after the tiring hike. You can see its quite a popular destination, more people we're arriving as I snapped this shot hiking out. We were a little worried about getting back to the treacherous climb out at the trailhead before dark, people just showing up must've been more prepared with headlamps.
The uppermost falls has a secluded ledge behind it you can swim to and sit under the falls, watching them crash a couple feet in front of you as crystal clear water drips around you. Afterwards, if you're refreshed enough and started the hike early enough in the day, a few more miles past this is the beautiful confluence of this stream and the mighty Colorado River.
