some sad news I have been expecting arrived yesterday ...
my dear Aunt Mal passed after battling cancer for many years ..
she had a good life and lived her entire life in Wales .. . she loved horses and farms .
when she discovered she had cancer she immediately arranged to hike the Pennine Way .. . this National Trail chases along the mountain tops along the rugged backbone of England and offers 268 miles of the finest upland walking in England. A once in a lifetime experience.
her energy and laughter and encouragement will be with me forever .. some special light never dies .. I miss her already ..

a rockface of multiple small waterfalls coming down a tremendously high mountain (Hestur mountain) in Hestfjordur along Iceland's Westfjords. The whole scenario looked so enchanting I thought this had to be a natural bathtub destined to offer dryads and nymphs a refreshing bath ;)
The Pine Warblers offer a welcomed splash of color during the drab winter months.
Fortunately for us and them they seem to enjoy almost all the food we offer from the suet, seed cakes, meal worms and hot meats. When one feeder runs out they always have a back up!
Oh, and they're awfully cute, too!

I don’t feel sad at all looking at this abandoned shed as I often do with photos of run-down places.
I’d like to think maybe with a better option, its owner had moved to a better place for a happier life.
And the dilapidated shed is still standing there not as a pitiful sight but a memory of what used to be...

I was offered to take a tour to Highgate Cemetery West and I agreed to join a small group of young ladies who were art students and definitely knew more about this cemetery than me...

The long summer days offer many unique perspectives on the famous Elb valley line, but one must wake up very early and go to sleep late to capture them. In May I made spontaneous three day trip to the Elbetal on the account of a perfect weather forecast and the 125th anniversary festival of the Kirnitzstalbahn tramway. The schedule allowed the near perfect combination of both events, with the early morning and late evening for trains and the day for trams, but it was tiring...the early morning sun lights up the town of Koenigstein as the 06:40 S1 from Dresden rolls into the station behind a class 143. The 143s normally dont work the S1 nowdays but due to a shortage of 146s atleast three sets per day were operating with them on my visit.
During courtship/bonding in the breeding season, male bee-eaters offer insect 'snacks' to females. Here on the branch are two males, left and middle (with the dragonfly) and the female to the right. Bothe sexes are alike with this species but females can often be separated from males by body size...but not always.
These migratory birds can be found as far north as Finland and as far south as South Africa, extending east into some Asiatic countries too. Most commonly, European Bee-eaters will breed and nest in southern Europe, then migrate south during autumn and winter.
European bee-eaters live for five to six years. The difficulties of migration and avoiding predators along the way affect every bird. Bee-eaters today also find it harder to find food, as there are fewer insects around as a result of pesticides.

The spectacle offered by the Alps is wonderful, it seems close at hand but the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Dom de Mischabel are between 150 and 170 km (105 miles) away from that Sanctuary that can be seen in the center of the photo. Thanks to the wind that blew strong in the previous days.

Lo spettacolo offerto dalle Alpi viste dall'appennino, è meraviglioso. Sembrano lì a portata di mano ma il Cervino, il Monte Rosa ed il Dom de Mischabel, sono lontani tra i 150 ed i 170 km, da quel Santuario che si vede nel centro della foto, posto a 651 metri di altitudine in Valtidone. Merito del vento che ha soffiato forte nei giorni precedenti.

This cavern offers a completely ride-through cave experience on propane-powered Jeep-drawn trams.
Fantastic Caverns was discovered in 1862 by an Ozarks farmer -- or more precisely, by his dog, who crawled through a small entrance in a hillside. It wasn't until five years after its discovery that the first exploration of Fantastic Caverns took place: twelve women from Springfield, answering a newspaper ad seeking explorers, ventured into the cave. Fantastic Caverns is one of more than 7,300 documented caves in Missouri, and more are still being discovered. Missouri is called The Cave State.
This small area offered a great deal of fun positioning the camera to make order out of the chaos. Mt Rundle in the background with twisted snow covered logs and their reflections in the foreground. It was a playground with grown up toys that even delivered a mid ground of various colors.
Banff is about 90 minutes away and I rarely get there. Voted among the most beautiful places in the world, one might wonder why more time is not spent there.

I want to take a moment and celebrate all my Flickr contacts as well - I chose to photograph a section of my kitchen chair (above) as a symbol of the friendship I have with most of you. The strands represent all of you, coming together to form a single point of strength and every day providing me with support and most of all encouragement. As with the chair, every strand counts - from the most timid but consistent "fave" (you know who you are) to the most flamboyant award giver (you know who you are too!). Please know that all this support combined has helped to up my quality and has stirred my imagination to a degree I never thought possible. The capital Luxembourg offers its visitors four Christmas markets. At the Place de la Constitution there are 41 houses around the monument to “Gëlle Fra”. The “Golden Christmas Tree”, which is placed at the top of the square, the giant pyramid and the Ferris wheel are also waiting for Christmas fans big and small. The panoramic view of the Petrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge is fascinating.

Sunrise on the Ottawa, or at least on a nice and open section of the River near the Deschesnes Rapids. The bird is swimming casually along an the edge of the ice that forms over a small bay outside the Rapids, a bay that offers the birds (when not frozen, or partially frozen) a sanctuary from the often violent water beyond.
Where I was lying on the ice is now open water, and the ice the duck was swimming beside as well. This is a seasonal image in the truest sense.
And the early light was amazing. That is seasonal as well, especially on the cold water.

The Blue-headed Vireo offers a pleasing palette of moss green, bluish gray, and greenish yellow, set off by bold white “spectacles” (the eyering plus a “loral” spot next to the bill), throat, and belly. The wings and tail are a sharp black and white. Like most larger vireos, Blue-headed forages for insects and their larvae in trees, moving deliberately along branches, where it can be challenging to spot. Machu Picchu not only offers the visitor the view of the temples and stone houses that are on its cusp, but also gives a look of its terraces and irrigation systems, which give a unique personality to the Incan citadel and its surroundings.
The Functions of the Platforms
These constructions are wide steps built on the mountains’s slopes that allowed the Incas to gain land in order to develop agriculture adapted to the landscape.
Without a doubt, creating great steps meant a great effort, but without these, the constant rains, the humidity of the environment and the steepness of the area would have triggered large landslides that would have destroyed the ruins of Machu Picchu.
This terrace system fulfills three main functions:
Containment: These constructions prevented the land’s erosion from creating landslides when carrying out the construction of cities, houses and temples.
Agriculture: Through the construction of these platforms, the Incas expanded the amount of land used for agricultural activity. These terraces allowed to take advantage of the rainwater as a source of crop irrigation directly from channels that connected each of the levels. Nowadays, crops are not cultivated anymore to maintain their integrity, due to the condition of World Heritage of Machu Picchu.
Ceremonial centers: these finer and more extensive construction platforms were intended to decorate ceremonial and/or administrative centers.
After an offer of a cab ride while they loaded the last half of the train, they blasted off from the loadout. I recall they said they very rarely saw railfans at the time. Seems I chased to the Cow Springs curve and opted to swing by Monument Valley that afternoon and end up in Helper UT that night!

Elk Mountain offers sub-alpine vegetation, with superb views. It is moderately challenging year-round destination for hikers in the Abbotsford, Chilliwack area, and can be enjoyed in a half or full day excursion. In the distance is Sumas Prairie, part of the eastern Fraser Valley, with the Coast Mountain Range on the horizon.
A late eastbound Zephyr offered me a chance to scratch off another bucket list location. There's an angled truss bridge that goes over the UP Falls City Sub [ex-MOP] just off the cluster of interstate bridges at what UP calls Summit. Because of that situation, there isn't any quick way to access this spot: I parked about "2 blocks" away, hopped a fence, and walked beside/under the interstate interchange. The shot is pretty tight with some junk on either side of the tracks, but it still framed up pretty nice for a tight crop on the scene.
