Be patient with me, because this is all in the back story.

Yesterday I was clearing out a big wardrobe that used to belong to my kid brother. Now I can say with complete candour that I was expecting to come across some stuff that would be...shall we say...colourful, and I did. But jammed in amongst all unmentionables that a young man of a certain age collects was this, which is a life size plastic lobster.

In a mix of bewilderment and hilarity, I put this one down to another night of drunken scanvenging, evoking strong memories of the time when I memorably came down the stairs one morning to find a wishing well in the hall. But no! This one has even more of a back story.

When I quizzed him on it last night for an explanation I was surprised to hear his girlfriend step in. The rationale lies in an episode of Friends (episode 2.14 trivia fans, "The One With the Prom Video") in which apparently Phoebe reveals a theory that people, like lobsters, have a mate for life. On this basis, aforementioned gf decided that a plastic lobster would make a delightful romantic present.

This opens another rich source of information - where does one buy a life size plastic lobster? Not as easy as you might think it seems! She rang round lots of butchers and fishmongers asking if any of them would sell her one, and then she finally found from one of them that she needed to visit the abbatoir that we all live quite close to, where she would find a butchers' accessory shop (I'm serious here) that should have them. In the end, they didn't have one, but they were able to obtain one that she later went and collected.

If they wrote it in fiction, nobody would believe it...

As I took this shot on a back street in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, an old man who had been visiting next door came over to talk to me and my wife. We found out that the garage originally dated to the late 1800's as a horse and buggy barn for the owners. The present owner acquired the garage and house in the 1950's, when he started a veterinary practice there. He knew all the history of the garage, as it had morphed over the years.

Really, who the heck wants lost dentures back?

Odd photo find in an alley. No idea why.

A shrine or memorial or tchotchke collection in Rip van Winkle Open Space. I like his wry expression.

so long, boots!

Someone likely threw these in the water, but the tide was out when I took the photo.

I did not purchase this item, but I DID score a View-Master package with a viewer and, oh, about 30+ reels including the complete 'Land of the Lost' set, a complete Rebus Game set, 2 of 3 reels from 'The Wiz', 2 of 3 reels from 'Superman', the complete 'Hawaii Five-O' set and the complete set of 'Muppet Movie' reels. Then there's the Children's Zoo set, the Wonderful World of Disney (Pinocchio/Lady & the Tramp, Snow White), the full Disney Peter Pan and Bible Stories: Noah's Ark set.

right ON!

A bar in Castlefield (Barca) seems to have recently shut down, and while they were emptying the place I spotted this glitzy fake piano out on the street. Had to catch a shot of it, due to it being so unusual.

While sorting through another old box of snapshots, I located a photo of a party my wife and I had in 1966 that clearly reveals one of my "bottle phase era" paintings. What has become it, only the wind knows, but judging from its location above our sofa, it must have been a work we liked. I vaguely recall painting it, but there were so many bottle paintings back then, and they sold well. Everyone in the apartment building wanted one. I usually sold a work like this for around $15 which included the frame.

What an odd find. Found an old forklift in the bottom of a bar.

HMV -- we were surprised to see the wreckage in the old storefront -- apparently they moved today into a new one inside Mayfair mall

Huh? Crutches and a bike wheel locked to a tree in downtown Victoria. I almost wanted to sit around and see who came to claim them...

Here's something different. While working on power systems maintenance for a facility I encountered this neat work of art. A butterfly made of cross connect wire.

I happened to need some supplies the other day and wandered into the local hobby shop. Just happens they were having and "Estate Sale" on some really old plastic models. Apparently someone had squirreled away a bunch of kits, when they died the family didnt know what to do with them. They took literally hundreds of these old kits down to the local shop (American Eagle Hobby). I was working on clearing out all my unbuilt kits and swore i wouldnt buy anymore, but I just had to get a couple. These are both ESCI kits. ESCI was an Italian company and has been out of business since 1987 so these are at least that old. I took the wrapper off one and had to snap a pic of how yellow the cellophane has become over the years. Colors on the box are still nice and bright, but without opening it you would never know :)

Old Car City USA - Sometimes Interesting

Tourist attraction in Bartow County, Georgia. Old Car City in White, Georgia contains the worlds largest known classic car junkyard & is a unique landscape of metal and moss. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City.

Old Car City started as a small general store in 1931 during the Great Depression, Old Car City gradually evolved into a very big, very old automobile junkyard. But it wasn't until 2009 that owner Dean Lewis -- who grew up on the property -- realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses. It is still family owned and operated. 34 acres of forest and fields filled with 4,000 old cars (1972 and older) weathered and deteriorating old American cars. It has more than 6.5 miles of trails on 34 acres. Located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta in White, Georgia, is a cross between a junkyard and an outdoor car museum.

Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, the BBC and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Who knew that Old Car City USA, a place where junk cars go to live out the rest of their existence, would be such a fascinating stop.

Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died. Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas . . . the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off.

a sandal, a glove, and an empty personal-size bottle of shampoo sitting beside a tree trunk along the Inner Harbour.

bought these lovely new sneakers for kiddo -- but check out the wording under the size: "crush infant" ... should I be worried?

Strange find at the flea market building down the street. Actually the most exciting find.

How did I never notice the UVic crest on the Centennial foundtain before??? I feel like Tom Hanks in the DaVinci Code.

Wow. $139 for a cheeseburger? Even for a double cheeseburger, I bet they don't make many sales.

Someone needs to explain the "decimal" to the staff. (Victoria, British Columbia)

abandoned on a public bench.

Yeah... hmmm.

This is a photo I found from back in May 06... I often complain about the state of the park next door, but this isn't really the cleanup I had in mind.

kiddo spotted this odd find -- it had been there long enough to be rusty.

looks like a portrait of someone surrounded by locks of hair?

hanging from a tree on campus.... not exactly apparel, but certainly a standard accessory.

No rice, no soy, no nuts, no fat, no protein, no dairy. Vegetable source

not sure why this flip flop was hanging in a tree; at the base of the same tree was a running shoe...

Hmm. Runningshoe and Shoeliette?

This nice old hydrant made a convenient place to hang some lost keys.

Hee! We tried on several -- I'm pretty sure we weren't supposed to though.

unearthed while prepping a new area for planting.

washed up on the shores of the inner harbour was this huge barnacle-encrusted rock (or more likely hunk of concrete) -- it was about 10 inches across at it's widest.

When I got out of the car I looked down and saw this pair of slippers on the other side of the kerb. On closer inspection, they were mostly new and looked like someone had found them and set them there for the owners to find. Thing is, from the doctors office, you’d never see them because of the distance and the kerb (curb in the USA). #weird #slipperstookawalk #oddfinds #oddfindsinrandomplaces

If I knew how to play.

Tiff and I went antiquing today. Found lots of things I'd love to buy but none that I really needed.

I look real cute with a Ukulele though...
