This Telematic is like a new girlfriend that makes me want to see the whole world through her eyes. I've been pulling out all kinds of stuff today. Including this.
This is a cheap little Danelectro French Toast pedal. Brand new I think it cost me $27. It's one of their mini-pedals. See the clear guard on there? Originally these pedals came without those and people were knocking those tiny little knobs and killing the tiny little pots their attached to, so they started putting those clear plastic guards on 'em. So you know it isn't built all that sturdy.
The thing is, these sound great. They're more or less a clone of the old Foxx Tone Machine and they're just great at getting that kind of nasty octave fuzz sound. My Telematic sounds amazing through this pedal.

This isn't going to happen today...actually, April's in the shower or I wouldn't even be posting on one of her rare days off. This new transformer came in the mail today, so I had to play Show and Tell when the chance arose, but that's because I'm secretly (it's still a secret, right?) an adolescent boy playing Science Fair.
About a year ago I built a Madbean Retrograde Octavia clone. It was OK-ish, but I wasn't all that into it so I sold it. It used the transformer on the left, which is a Xicon 42TM022. The published specs for that transformer's primary are 1.5k of impedance and 65 ohms of resistance.
On the right is the Xicon 42TM011 from the same series. You can see it's a larger transformer, but the primary specs are similar. Its primary specs out at 1.5K and 120 ohms.
These transformers aren't rated by the manufacturer for inductance, though, and it's been suggested that the difference in inductance between the two makes a notable difference in the octave's presence in an octave fuzz circuit.
General Guitar Gadgets makes an Octavia board that takes the 42TM011 transformer, though. I also have another Madbean Retrograde board sitting in my desk. Now, a better test would be to put these two transformers on a switch and A/B between them, but the extra wire and stuff would influence the inductance and it's generally a hassle, so the quick first step I'd like to try is a simple A/B between the circuits to see if the bigger transformer yields anything significant.
But later...not today.
I ran into a little of that ship-in-a-bottle nonsense stuffing this Fender Blender clone into the enclosure. I went a size bigger, too. This PCB is designed to go into a 1590B and I used a 125B, which is a tiny bit taller and a smidge wider. I tend to use oversize capacitors, though, and they were bumping into everything. Nice that I recently bought a solder sucker, 'cause I had to replace a couple of them with smaller caps.
Although, Elna has these low-profile caps that I've been using lately here and there. Like, if they're 5mm spacing the height will also be 5mm. Squat little buggers, but they seem to be nice quality pieces. That's what I used for the caps I replaced. I guess I should start using those more often, since I run into space issues fairly frequently when I'm not using one of my giant enclosures.
Anyway, it's a very interesting circuit. The, "Blend" part of the name comes from the ability to blend some clean signal back into the fuzz sound. It's a very interesting kind of octave-fuzz-death-ray.

This is an Octavia clone based on the General Guitar Gadgets PCB, which uses a larger transformer than the Madbean PCB. It has a very pronounced octave effect, but produces less fuzz.
Check this out. The enclosure on the left is a Roger Mayer, "Rocket" enclosure that belongs to a customer. On the right is a perfboard circuit from C. Russ Rutledge built to fit in the enclosure.
He set out to reverse engineer the Glenn Wylie Moonrock octave/fuzz. This was initially complicated by the fact that Glenn Wylie apparently put out photos of the circuit board with the wrong components soldered in place. After his death there were so few of the pedals around that nobody seemed to know exactly how to build one of these properly.
This circuit is transformer-based, like the Tycobrahe Octavia (currently built by Chicago Iron), but the Moonrock has got another kind of beautiful thing going on. It has a, "Bloom" control that really changes the dynamics.
Anyway, even the old Tycobrahe circuit is better than a Mayer and this is better than the Tycobrahe, IMO. Hopefully the customer enjoys it. It's one of only a handful of these circuits in existence.

There just wasn't going to be enough room for the transformer if it stood on top of the circuit board, so Russ made this little flying daughterboard that suspends the transformer so half of it is above the board and half below. Fits like a charm now!
A clone of the old Univox Super-Fuzz octave fuzz pedal.
There's a video or two I posted on my Fool Audio Research feed on Facebook of setting up the first one I built. I was all, "OK, this is beyond my ability to control." Same thing here.
I spent about 20 minutes dialing this in just now and finally got it to behave, but you can tell that what it really wants to do is summon Cthulhu and the Old Ones from the depths of space.
