The Sydney Harbour Bridge on the left, the Sydney Opera House in the Centre and Circular Quay on the right of the image.

Fort Denison or "Pinchgut" is the small island can be seen in the centre of the image. "Pinchgut was a prison from early settlement and was also a military fort in the mid 1800's and named Fort Denison. The term "Pinchgut" was derived from prisoners who endured pains in their gut from the terrible food served to them. The island is also known as Mattewanye or Muddawahnyuh from the local Aboriginal language.

On the right of the image you can see an ocean liner docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay where international passengers can embark/disembark. Circular Quay is the main hub for the Sydney Harbour Ferries that service the harbour for local passenger transport. A day on the ferries is a great way to see Sydney's main harbour and Parramatta River.

Sydney Cove where Circular Quay is situated was the first areas settled by the First Fleet in 1788. The Aboriginal name for Circular Quay is Warrung, meaning "Little Child".

The iconic Sydney Opera can be seen in the centre of the image on Benelong Point. The Sydney Opera Hose was completed in 1973 and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20th 1973. The Sydney Opera House was originally designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon but completed by an Australian architectural team headed by Peter Hall. On 28 June 2007, the Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Opera House was also a finalist in the New7Wonders of the World campaign list.

Kirribilli House, can just be be seen in amongst the trees on the pont directlly across the harbour on the left fom the Sydney Opera House. Kirribilli House is the secondary official residence of the Prime Minister of Australia. It is one of two official Prime Ministerial residences, the primary official residence being The Lodge in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.

Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed primarily in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line (known as Cunard-White Star when the vessel entered service). Built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland, Queen Mary along with her running mate, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York City. The two ships were a British response to the superliners built by German and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth. The vessel also held the Blue Riband from 1936 to 1937 and then from 1938 to 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States.

Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and captured the Blue Riband in August of that year; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938. With the outbreak of World War II, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers for the duration of the war. Following the war, Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s Queen Mary was aging and though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss.

After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. Much of the machinery including two of the four steam turbines, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers were removed, and the ship now serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum, and hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted the Queen Mary to be part of the Historic Hotels of America.

In Philadelphia, waiting for a new role, the U.S.S. United States, the largest luxury passenger liner ever built. It is also the fastest ship to ever cross the Atlantic, still holding the record. She is 990 feet long (the length of 3 football fields) and sped along at 35 knots per hour (40 miles or 65 km). Imagine seeing this rush by!

Two of my family members were on the 2nd crossing in 1952, leaving Southampton, England, when emigrating from Scotland to the United States.

To an untrained eye this might appear to be a tree swing. But those of us in the know recognize this as the cockpit of a race car or a jet fighter. Or perhaps it's the cab of a semi tractor-trailer, or the engineer's seat on a subway train, or the captain's seat on an oceanliner. Maybe it's the seat on a Harley-Davidson hog or a BMW road bike. The fact is, it is the dream seat. And if you never sat in that seat, you missed the thrill of a lifetime.

I have a lovely friend who is known to frequent charity and thrift shops looking for interesting bits and pieces for photography purposes. Often she sends me photographs of things she thinks I might like when she stumbles upon them, so I can say yes or no to them. Now, I collect many, many things, but dolls are not one of those, save for the occasional Russian matryoshka doll set, and even then they have to be special. Imagine my delight when one day she sent me a photograph of a beautifully hand painted and colourful Russian matryoshka doll set in yellows, reds and greens! I said yes to them, even though the set of five isn’t complete, with the third doll missing her top and the fourth missing her bottom. Nevertheless, that leaves three very pretty dolls whom I have enjoyed photographing over the last month.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 13th of July is “open day theme”, which is a theme without a theme. This means that the choice of subject is mine, must be new to Flickr and can’t be posted in any other groups prior to the closing of the group’s posting time of ten o’clock in the evening Central European Time. Since I have enjoyed photographing my new Russian matryoshka doll set, I thought I would put up a photograph of them. Here they are, setting off on a whirlwind world tour. Their wooden suitcases are packed and they have a plethora of destinations to visit. The suitcases, labelled with appropriately glamorous destinations, are from the 1950s and the background is a wonderful roll of paper printed with vintage labels from hotels and modes of transport from around the world. I hope you like my choice of the theme, and that it makes you smile.

Queen Mary

Queensway Bay

Long Beach, CA

This is the third photo of the Queen Mary Ocean Liner I've processed from my "drone shoot" on the way home from work on March 3rd, 2022.

I sent the drone around the liner and got perspective shots from each side. I didn't shoot the stern, and I want to hover it above the deck next time I do this. (The attraction has been closed since the advent of Covid and is currently getting ready for restoration, so it's a perfect time to photograph the ship. Too bad they already removed the lifeboats, which I understand will not be reattached because they were putting a strain on the 86 year old boat.)

When on the ground, you can't get a good shot from this "angle" because the Russian Submarine attraction blocks the liner. One time I attempted to use the eraser and clone tools and "erase" the sub, but it didn't work. At least with the drone, I can just move the perspective enough that the sub isn't noticed.

Many thanks for your visits, kind comments and faves, very much appreciated.
