Situé à 820 m d'altitude, c'est

un charmant village de montagne dans la vallée d'Orlu, un petit village paisible vivant au rythme de l'Oriège, la rivière qui le traverse avant de se jeter dans l'Ariège, 4 km plus loin à Ax les Thermes.

Beau ou laid, qu'importe, c'est une mesure du temps... Je repasse dans l'Hérault et le Gard... après 47 ans.

Avec ses 3 kilomètres de remparts, ses 52 tours, son château ... véritable forteresse dans la forteresse.... sa basilique, son village toujours habité, la ville haute de Carcassonne, située sur la rive droite de l'Aude, est la plus grande cité fortifiée d'Europe !

Classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, Carcassonne existe depuis près de 2500 ans, successivement villa romaine, vicomté médiévale sous la dynastie des Trencavels, victime d’une terrible croisade, détruite, reconstruite, agrandie et renforcée, abandonnée au cours des siècles, puis sauvée de la destruction et enfin restaurée par l’œuvre majeure de Viollet-le-Duc au 19e siècle,

On peut admirer les traces de chacune de ces époques sur les murs de cette antique Cité, un vrai livre d’Histoire grandeur nature !

En esta localidad falleció el poeta Antonio Machado en el exilio y está enterrado en su antiguo cementerio. El novelista inglés Patrick O'Brian vivió también este pueblo desde 1949 hasta 1998, y tras su muerte dos años después en Dublín su viuda lo enterró en el nuevo cementerio de Colliure situado a las afueras.

Avant d'atteindre le Gardon d'Alès, ce ruisseau si calme ( quand il n'est pas à sec!) peut se transformer en redoutable torrent , déverser jusqu'à 450m3/s et faire de nombreux dégâts sur son passage.
