The Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) are a number of independent astronomical research facilities and large telescope observatories that are located at the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, United States. The facilities are located in a 525-acre (212 ha) special land use zone known as the "Astronomy Precinct", which is located within the 11,228-acre (4,544 ha) Mauna Kea Science Reserve. The Astronomy Precinct was established in 1967 and is located on land protected by the Historical Preservation Act for its significance to Hawaiian culture.
The location is near ideal because of its: dark skies from lack of light pollution, good astronomical seeing, low humidity, high altitude of 4,205 meters (13,796 ft), position above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere, clean air, good weather and low latitude location.

If I'm not mistaken, the Zeiss Telescope is located inside this dome, or one of the others. I cannot recall which part of L.A. is in the background, but I was grateful to get a shot of this dome and a view of the City of Angels. My time there was limited, but I still have plenty of pictures to share-both with my iPhone and my Canon.

I enjoyed my visit to The Griffith Observatory. Lovely place, and it offers such a spectacular view of Los Angeles as well as the famous Hollywood Sign.

Taken at Swansea Beach - the large builidng in the foreground is the old observatory which has not been converted into a cafe (yet to open!) and holiday accommodation. It always seemed a very strange place to site an observatory as it is on the edge of the city with lots of light pollution! HWW!
McDonald Observatory is an astronomical observatory located near unincorporated community of Fort Davis. The facility is located on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains of West Texas.
Built in 1866, Bidston Observatory in Wirral was once at the centre of research into tide times and astronomy.
It is being auctioned with space for residential development and a guide price of £550,000.
The Bidston Observatory Preservation Trust wants to see the building remain as a heritage centre.
The Marina Towers Observatory (also known as the Swansea Observatory and Tower of the Ecliptic) is located in the Maritime Quarter of Swansea, on the coast of southern Wales. It was previously home to Wales's largest optical astronomical telescope.[1] The building was designed by Robin Campbell in 1989 and consists of two towers, it was built with part funding from a European Heritage Grant. From 1993 to Feb 2010 it was loaned to the Swansea Astronomical Society but it is now back in the hands of Swansea City Council.
The top of the tower has a stained glass feature designed by David Pearl. Observational facilities previously included a 20-inch Shafer-Maksutov telescope - the second largest of its kind in the world. But this has since been removed after Swansea Astronomical Society vacated the site.
I believe this was taken with my Kodak Retina IIIc a couple of years ago. I used expired Fuji Sensia 400 and pulled the color out in post because it looked kinda funky and I wasn't having much luck fixing it. Lab processed. Scanned with a D-SLR on a home-made scan rig using a Schneider Componon 80mm enlarging lens, macro bellows and copy stand. Post production with Darktable.
Ancient Megalithic Observatory Kokino is a Bronze Age Archaeoastronomical site 19th century BC and contains markers used to study the movement of the moon and the sun creating a lunar calendar.

The two green beams shooting out of the building are LIDARS whose primary purpose was to locate polar stratospheric clouds (ozone depleting clouds).
The Quito Astronomical Observatory is one of the oldest observatories in South America and was founded in 1873.
Ecuador is located in a strategic geographical position where solar-physics studies can be performed year-round, providing data for the scientific community working to understand Sun-Earth interactions.
The Quito Astronomical Observatory was completely renovated and fully restored in 2009.
Travel to Ecuador
I visited this wonderful observatory during the week with a friend of mine and it made for a fantastic subject to shoot at night.
The lights in the distance are Bristol but considering that this location is situated in the heart of the city, light pollution was reasonable. I used a head torch to light the building during the thirty seconds the shutter was open and this really lifted the image for me.

At 2,426 meters, Roque de los Muchachos is the highest point on the Canary Island of La Palma and an ideal spot for astronomical observation and research. There are many observatories, but this one looks like a construction site.
