Morning obligations to improve chances of a good lunch.

I also made a more detailed shot of the lines and shadows, created by sunlight on that building (see first comment box).

Decided to go for monochrome and another angle, so it looks different.

Always interested to know what you think about it. No obligation, of course ;-))

Happy Tuesday!!

I'm sorry friends for the absence earlier this year. Our lives on planet Earth change constantly, and sometimes we find ourselves in a whirlwind of tasks, family problems and obligations that force us to postpone activities that give us pleasure.

I hope I can come back completely in two weeks.

I have to say that, unfortunately for me, the return to photographic activity is far from being realized. Meanwhile I will continue to publish the photos of the trip to Italy in July 2018.

Thank you for understanding and support.

I wish you a happy weekend everyone.

Until the end of the trip in Rome, many were the fields of sunflowers I saw, but unfortunately traveling by highways is impossible to stop and make the records properly.

Italy is not a country of great territorial extension compared to Brazil, for example. In the meantime there are thousands of communes, almost always with a castle on top of the hill, adorable nooks that attract attention and enchant us.

To stop in each of these communes is the constant desire, but then the trip of a month would have to turn into a journey of years :)))

Been awhile since I've seen the Bobcats, but finally saw one yesterday and took several shots of him. I spent a bit of time one on one then left for an hour and returned. He was still in the general area looking for prey. I had other obligations and had to leave. He tried a few times to grab prey but was unsuccessful. Next time! Click for large view.

Christmas Holiday Season is a very busy time of the year for me. Lots of preparations and obligations to my family. I have therefore not had the time to take any new pictures lately. This image however, is representative of how the weather where I live is at the moment. Very wet and not much snow.

Thank you so much for all the support and compliments you have all given me these last years. I appreciate it so much!!

Wish you all a wonderful and peaceful Christmas and lovely, happy new year filled with picture opportunities!

In case you're interested, you'll find a less cropped version of the photo above: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/western-green-lizard-lacerta-bi...

The story behind the photo:

For the most part, I try to show photos here that come with an entertaining anecdote that my fellow Flickerites can identify with and enjoy; the world offers enough misery as it is, so my goal is to cheer you up, not to drag you down. But here for once I feel I have a responsibility to share with you what I see as a cautionary tale - and I don't blame you if you turn away now, because what follows is not a pleasant read.

But before I get into that I want to say that the year 2022 was - at least as far as my photographic endeavors were concerned - an amazing one, and I'm very grateful. It was a year of many firsts for me; I managed to produce my first acceptable bird photo; I was for the first time able to capture a roe deer as well as a swallowtail, a mantis and even a fox (which I can't wait to show you): all from within my tiny garden in Ticino.

But while there were many wonderful encounters with the fascinating creatures that share "my" vacation home and its adjacent garden with me that I was only too happy to show here, you might have noticed that the lizard species whose Latin name is my alias on Flickr and that - still - "kinda" serves as the main focus of my gallery, has been absent for a long while.

One of the reasons for holding back on new Lacerta bilineata photos is obviously that I decided to widen my focus a bit and that I now concentrate on all the species I manage to capture in my garden and its immediate surroundings.

But there is another reason I haven't uploaded any western greens this summer. Even though I shot dozens of photos of some of the most gorgeous individuals of the species I've ever seen (many of which you can also find here: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/western-green-lizard-lacerta-bi... ), those were all taken on the other side of the village, and not in my garden.

The beautiful male above was in fact one of only 3 western greens I found (alive) in the vicinity of my garden between May and October in 2022 - and out of those he's the only one I was able to photograph.

So what happened? Well, a year ago the neighbor to my immediate left got a young cat, and at the same time, the neighbor to my right also adopted two kittens. Before I continue, it is important to me that you know that I myself am very much a cat person: I adore felines of any kind, and in our own household (though not at our vacation home) we've always had generations of cats, and they were and are as dear to us as our human family members.

So I have no interest in pushing any sort of "anti-cat agenda"; I'm just telling you what happened. By the time spring 2022 came around, my neighbors' cats were almost fully grown and had developed their hunting skills. Between the three of them, they killed up to a dozen western green lizards every day once the reptiles started re-emerging from their winter hiding places which is when they generally are at their most slow and vulnerable.

It was easy to count the dead lizards, because the cats didn't eat them, and whenever I was outside rarely an hour passed without one of the cats showing up with a lizard or some other animal in its mouth. They also killed most of the snakes, even the slightly longer ones at 50-70cm.

Within only a few weeks, the entire Lacerta bilineata population in and around my garden was gone, and the same was true for the population of green whip snakes, while even the number of common wall lizards, which were extremely abundant before, markedly went down during that same time period.

There had always been cats in our village, and I was aware or at least suspected that the ebb and flow of the bilineata population in the past was somewhat tied to how many cats were permanently present at any given time, but my immediate neighbors had never had cats before (which is probably why a tiny population of this protected reptile species had managed to survive around my house).

Now experiencing up close what an impact only 3 cats can have on an isolated, small reptile population was absolutely shocking. What I witnessed made me sad, but I'm not angry at the cats - nor do I hold a grudge towards my neighbors, who are kind, generous and all around lovely people.

And while I don't want to lecture anybody, what I would like to do is offer a few ideas how we as cat-lovers can help mitigate the averse effects our beloved pets' predatory nature (which is nobody's fault: least of all the cats') has on the ecosystems around our homes.

If we live in areas where there's threatened/protected species close to our homes that our cats will prey upon, the time when we let our pets out of the house can already make a huge difference. For example, western green lizards are at their most active between 8am and 11am, and not letting our cats out during that period can already increase the lizards' chance of survival.

If you're a cat lover like me but you also want to protect your local fauna, knowing when during the day birds and reptiles are the most active as well as knowing their breeding/nesting cycles is crucial, and by adjusting the times or time periods when you let your cat out of the house (or not) accordingly will make a vital difference.

But there are also simpler approaches: most reptiles and birds (which are by far the most vulnerable to hunting cats) are not active during the night. Rodents like rats and mice on the other hand very much are, so if you mostly let your cat out after sunset, it will predominantly hunt mice and rats, which are usually abundant enough that their populations aren't threatened (this at least is true for western Europe - other regions might have threatened wildlife that is active during the night, so if you do care, try to educate yourself about the creatures that will fall prey to your pet).

Cats are perfectly adapted to night activity, but they switch to more daytime activity in order to better fit the routine of "their" humans. So while our cats probably won't like it at first to have to stay indoors during the day, they will quickly adapt and accept it, as long as they know they will be able to leave the house once the sun has gone down.

Naturally, there might be practical issues involved that make it impossible to try some of the above (like the presence of coyotes who will eat your cats if they are out at night), but who knows, maybe one person or other will find some of these suggestions useful. And while it may be too late for "my" lizards, I just feel an obligation to at least try to help raise awareness on the issue (although I realize this is a touchy subject and people have strong opinions about it).

In any case, thank you so much for taking the time to read this not very pleasant text. And as always, let me know what you think of the photo in the comments below - but please refrain from making any "heated" statements regarding the issue at hand out of respect for other commenters whose feelings you might hurt (if you feel very strongly about this subject and want to "vent", you may always reach me via my Flickr Mail).

First violin with obligation in a row

A day with a special story. 75 years ago, on May 8th, the German Wehrmacht capitulated, i.e. World War II was officially ended. The end of the war and at the same time a day of liberation from National Socialism in Germany and Europe. We as the successor generation have the obligation to prevent a strengthening of nationalism and to keep the memory of the atrocities alive. The right, a harmless term, must never again be allowed to gain power in any country in Europe or the world.

Our commitment our heritage, which we must accept and act upon.

I wish you a good and relaxing weekend, dear friends. Be careful and stay healthy.

Sorry I have not been around and the next few days don't look much better...no obligation to comment!!!

Yet we have the obligation to try to unveil it

Today Northwest Germany was hit by heavy thunderstorms. My home town got just the perfect quantity of rain. Without obligations to water the garden I pinched (again) the scooter of my son to invade near by Lower Saxony. In the middle of nowhere I spotted this scene. Melle, Lower Saxony, Germany.

This shot is a symbol for a perfect balance. Hope that my dear friend with the orange hair will get sober one day to achieve something similar. May the cool waters of Canada have a healing effect.....

[lyrics]

I see the want in your blue eyes.

*Baby, I'd love you to want me

The way that I want you

The way that it should be

Baby, you'd love me to want you

The way that I want to

If you'd only let it be.

You told yourself years ago

You'd never let your feeling show

The obligation that you made

For the title that they gave.

Wikipedia: Khao Yai National Park (Thai: อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่) is a national park in Thailand. Established in 1962 as Thailand's first national park, it is the third largest national park in Thailand.

Khao Yai National Park is in the western part of the Sankamphaeng Mountain Range, at the southwestern boundary of the Khorat Plateau. The highest mountain in the area of the park is 1,351 meters (4,432 ft) high Khao Rom. This park lies largely in Nakhon Ratchasima Province (Khorat), but also includes parts of Saraburi, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok Provinces.

The park is the third largest in Thailand. It covers an area of 2,168 square kilometers, including tropical seasonal forests and grasslands. Elevations mostly range from 400–1,000 meters (1,300–3,300 ft). There are 3,000 species of plants, 320 species of birds such as red junglefowl and coral-billed ground cuckoo, and 66 species of mammals, including Asian black bear, Indian elephant, gaur, gibbon, Indian sambar deer, southern pig-tailed macaque, Indian muntjac, Ussuri dhole and wild pig. There have been are no tigers in Khao Yai for at least 20 years. Its waterfalls include the 80-metre (260 ft) Heo Narok (เหวนรก), and Heo Suwat (หวสุวัต) made famous by the film The Beach.

Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex being proclaimed a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO resulted in the Thai government becoming the key custodian of the forest in Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai. To prevent deterioration or degradation, the state has been required to institute measures to protect the forest, as part of its obligations under the Convention on Cultural and Natural World Heritage. The conservation and protection of the World Heritage site relies on cooperation between the state, the private sector, private organizations, local communities and the general public. It is also necessary to maintain opportunities for scientific research.

(Tagore)

As much one lives alone, on the river or in the countryside, the more you realize that there is nothing more beautiful and great than to fulfill the obligations of their daily life, simply and naturally. From the grass of the fields to the stars of the sky, everything does just that; there is such a deep peace and such immense beauty in nature, because nothing tries to transgress its limits.

No modifications - straight from the camera.

This one is dedicated to my mother - who spotted it in the first place and convinced me to take the picture. There are a few surprises visible only in the large size...

I'm lucky that she's still around - though when she flies back to India next week, I'll miss her a lot.

And as someone said a while ago, with this shot, I fulfill the obligations in flickr's terms and conditions - to post a picture of rose with dew :-) (well, "technically", I was supposed to upload a "dry" rose, which I guess the yellow one a week ago fulfilled!).

I hadn't actually planned to be in the calendar myself, but RL obligations kept the original Mr. September from being able to complete his photo. So, I punted and did one myself.

September, which is also my birth month, always makes me think of the fall leaves and going hunting with my father. Thus, you get an fae on an Autumn hunt with a few friends, filling the larder for the winter months.

Canada stopped making pennies in 2013 because even though they had not contained any copper in a long time, there was still a cost of 1.6 cents to make each 1 cent coin. The hunger of wealth, jewels and fame

Led me to betray my motherland

Never did I think of its obligations upon me

Although my fate had the revenge in its hand.

I thought I had succeeded all the way

I got the life I was waiting for

The dreams of being filthy rich

Or the wishes I once used to adore.

A few days of gain was everything for me

A life like a king knew no bound

Few days looked like years of comfort

But what was in my fate was now too late to be found.

In the midst of this all that I can recall

There came a time that I can't forget at all

A turning point in the route of my life

A U-turn that led me to a gigantic fall.

The treachery of mine gave its yield

And the awaiting disaster struck me hard

I was hurled away like a broken old toy

Everything was snatched and I was destroyed.

I was back to my own, worse than my past

I got completely ruined and was aghast

Nothing did I have to satisfy my gut

I had began to starve until it did last.

Within the darkness finally came a ray of light

From the mid of the sea came a shore in sight

I was back to the soil I did betray

But that very soil breathed me my life.

Broken was I with the shame in my heart

Lamenting myself all night all day

For betraying a soil that was everything to me

I wanted to state but had nothing to say.

But still the land like a mother it was,

Gave my life back like a child long lost

The clear blue sky was the shade I had

The fragrant soil was the mat I got.

I regret it now when the time has passed

That I couldn't get it, I couldn't understand

That this divine beauty, the sacred soil

Was nothing much in sight but truly my motherland.

The need to be creative weighed against obligations can sometimes feel overwhelming. But I love blogging. So I wanted to show how I sometimes feel but also be creative at the same time.

Every warrior of the light has been afraid to enter a combat.

Every warrior of the light has betrayed and lied in the past.

Every warrior of the light has lost faith in the future.

Every warrior of the light has trodden a path which was not his own.

Every warrior of the light has suffered because of unimportant things.

Every warrior of the light has doubted that he is a warrior of the light.

Every warrior of the light has failed in his spiritual obligations.

Every warrior of the light has said yes when he meant no.

Every warrior of the light has hurt someone he loved.

That is why he is a warrior of the light, because he has been through all this and yet has never lost hope of being better than he is.

Dear friends ,

l have many obligations on my time in December , so l will be taking a break from Flickr ...

l have greatly appreciated your support in 2009 ...and l have been inspired by your beautiful photos ...

Thank you for a wonderful year ....best wishes to all of you :-)

I spent most of yesterday in southern Maine due to family obligations, and was lucky enough to stumble onto a flock of 40 of these birds just before getting onto the highway. They were very jumpy and only provided a brief opportunity before taking off out of sight to the north.

My beloved Mr. Snuggles, our loving dog who is heading for a thirteenth birthday next year. Precocious, sometime downright snarky with a looks like this one that convey how he feels about things. Posting this a day late as obligations yesterday kept me from posting for National Dog Day which is August 26. Happy National Dog Day old friend, you are very loved and your loyalty toward me and the family is wonderful. Love ya buddy!

It's been a few months since I posted anything here. Between my computer breaking, moving, getting a cat, COVID lockdowns, and other life obligations I haven't even had time to get trackside since the fall, let alone edit photos in that time. Hoping that'll change soon now that I'm vaccinated and have some trips up my sleeve in the spring and summer months. In the mean time, here's the AC6000 DPU on a soda ash train on its way into Echo Canyon. This was my one and only time along the UP's old transcontinental main and it was mostly a bust, save for a couple of trains we shot in the canyon that morning.
