Relay for Life is an annual event where NYU kids get into groups of anywhere from 3 to 15 people and spend the night walking in order to raise funds for cancer awareness and research. It's an event that occurs all over the country, but our relay takes place in the main field house of Coles Sports Center. Each team is given its own little "campsite," and around the campsites is the track that we each take turns walking around all night long. It's a fun event and it's great to see all the unique ideas that people have come up with to raise money on the night of the event, but the downside to it is that loud music (sometimes live, sometimes DJ-ed, sometimes karaoked) is blasted from the speakers all night long, and the bright lights stay on for pretty much the entire time, as well. Somehow I managed to squeeze in an hour of sleep last night, but it wasn't exactly my typical kind of nap since I was on the hard floor and surrounded by about 300 other people.
I took this picture at around 6:30 AM, when the closing ceremonies were over and my teammates and I were waiting for the Safe Ride van to drive us back to our dorms. At first, I was standing inside with two of the others (where it was nice and warm!), but then as soon as I saw one of the sleeping bags get unfolded again, I just knew that I had to run back outside for this quick shot. I really don't think that anything else can express the feeling of just how tired and exhausted we were this morning, more than this photo does.
Then again, I can't be too sure about that, since I have about 130 more pictures to sort through and upload to our club web site. Sleep comes first, though :)
