women's nylons and fiber fill
Katya Usvitsky's "Mama" and "Daughter" sculptures are constructed with women's nylons. Usvitsky is interested in exploring the possibilities of using mundane materials and creating something extraordinary. She creates abstracted forms that are at the same time grotesque but also soft and comforting. She created them by twisting, and deforming a nylon stocking into something that resists it's attempts to restrain and normalize the body. Her sculptures are at once seductive yet visceral at once. Usvistsky is drawn to the dually charged nature of women's nylons, seen as both utilitarian and sexy. Her sculptures are interesting in the fact that she used such a suggestive fabric used for women's undergarments and makes them ironically into comforting womb like forms. The different skin tones from the stockings are both sweet and slightly unnerving.
