My father,
who they called Icy,
short for Isaiah
the Biblical prophet,
is dead, but this hasn't stopped me
from speaking to him frequently
at his graveside in New Jersey.
He speaks in light,
a luminous communication from
the core of his being
to mine. We last spoke
a few weeks ago, when
I was in New York for
a visit. Now in Yosemite,
I see totoems of
him everywhere;
highway signs,
yellow rectangles standing
on their corners with
the word "Icy" in
the middle;
bright orange
flags protruding from
their sides like arms
or like wings; a small
circular reflector
on top, like an
undersized, luminous head.
We see them on
the side of every road,
primitive, in vivid earth tones
like something the Indians
who used to live here
would have made. I wonder if
it means my own end is coming, if I
will soon be luminous myself, a totem
who also communicates by light,
or if Icy has
come precisely to prevent this,
to protect me, his
luminous head speaking
to me once more, saying
this road is slippery and
you can't see it.
