Storax Sedan (yield 104 kt) - the explosion created a crater 98 meters (320 feet) deep and 390 meters (1,280 feet) wide by displacing 12 million tons of soil. (Look to the size of the roads in the bottom-right of the picture, and the observation deck at the lower-right edge of the crater, for a sense of scale)

Storax Sedan (yield 104 kt) - shallow underground nuclear test conducted by the United States on 6 July 1962 at Nevada Test Site. The main purpose of the detonation was to asses the non military dimension of a nuclear explosion.

This is the Sedan Crater at the Nevada Test Site, where the government tested atomic weapons between 1951 and 1992. The crater was created in 1962 as part of the Plowshare program, which researched the possibility of using nuclear explosions for peaceful purposes. Proposals for Plowshare included using bombs for excavation (hence the Sedan test). Government officials wanted to use bombs to dig a new Panama canal, and also to excavate a harbour in Alaska. Other potential uses including mining for oil.

The radiation produced by the bombs was one of the issues that caused the US government to abandon the idea, but the Russians are said to have gone ahead with their own program, using nuclear bombs for different purposes including creating dams.

Trinity Test (yield 19 kt) - Worlds first atomic bomb detonated by the U.S. at Trinity site in the southern New Mexico on 16 July 1945. Fast-rising incandescent cloud produced by explosion illuminated the skies. More information on the test: bit.ly/vdgceh

Nuclear Explosion

via a beach in Barbados and Photoshop !

"On the Beach" is a great book by Nevil Shute, set in AUSTRALIA, during a Nuclear War, when the end is coming closer and closer.

It's illegal to collect trinitite. After cleanup decades ago and many thousands of visitors since then, I doubt there's much of any trinitite to be picked up any longer, anyway.

The Ferris wheel.

An Atomic Bomb explodes at Frenchman's Flats, near Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1953. When they were going to test a bomb, they would let the people in Las Vegas know so they could all go out and watch it from far away at the hotels. It was a favorite attraction.

wonder what cloud is tat???

Makes me think of Icarus...
