If the sandstone arches of Utah were dropped into the dense forests of the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky, this is what you'd get. These abundant sandstone formations are remnants of shallow seas that once covered the area.

On a personal note, the deciduous forests of Appalachia can sure hold in moisture. High, high humidity. In struggling with my equipment, fogged up glasses and sweat in my eyes, I couldn't find my backpack as I took this photo. Now where'd I leave that backpack?

The massive North Arch of Twin Arches in the Tennessee section of the Big South Fork NRRA has a clearance of 70 ft and a span of 135 ft, the deck is 32 ft. thick at it's thinnest point. Absolutely one of the coolest formations I've had the pleasure to see. If you look closely my good friend Chris Morris sits on a rock near the bottom of the photograph for scale.

Scott County, Tennessee is largely covered with mountains, arches, bluffs, and rock shelters that are underneath a blanket of dense deciduous forest, the Scott Forest. It skirts Central Kentucky's southern border.

This north arch, which is half of what is called the Twin Arches, is part of the federal Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. This arch is a little more visible at a distance during late fall and winter when the trees have lost their foliage.

If Southern Utah's Colorado Plateau were covered not with arid desert but with rain and one of the world's oldest hardwood forests such as here in Appalachia's Cumberland Plateau, this is likely what Utah's arch lands would look like.

Besides having fantastic natural wonders, Scott County is famous for its history. During the Civil War, Scott County residents were not friendly to the Confederacy. These pro-Union Tennesseans joined other easterners of the state who wanted to break away from what they felt was the tyranny of Confederate Tennessee. Inspired by a former Tennesseean governor's speech who urged mightily for Tennesseean lawmakers to have their state stay in the United States, the county declared itself the State of Scott in 1861 when Tennessee declared that it would indeed join the Confederacy. Scott County would rescind its own proclamation of secession from Tennessee more than a hundred years later in 1986.

Probably my best shot last weekend. The temps had warmed up enough to get the falls flowing and the ice volcano melting. I normally don't like the straight ahead shot of this type of waterfall, but I think this composition works. Of course there are lots of things I'd like to have different about it, like a stronger flow and more water in the creek, but you're there when you're there. This is really a neat place. At 113 feet, it's Kentucky's highest waterfall, and has a huge recessed area behind it.

After visiting Yahoo Arch, I hiked on down to Yahoo Falls. At 113 feet, this falls is Kentucky's highest that flows year-round, although in the late summer months it dries up to a trickle. The best time to see it is after heavy rains, as was the case here. This is the heaviest I've ever seen it, although I have seen photos of it where it was heavier. It has an enormous recessed area behind it, which adds to its charm.

Back in October 2013, I made my only trip to the Big South Fork. My photo club had an outing, and after it was over, I planned to possibly hit a few spots and work my way up to Cumberland Falls for the moonbow that night. Fall foliage was quite disappointing considering it was the third week in October and the river was somewhat low. As I was making my way back up to Cumberland Falls for the moonbow, I decided to stop by Yahoo Falls to see how it was flowing. I wasn't expecting much considering the season, but was pleasantly surprised when I got to the falls. Nothing spectacular, but more than I had expected. And I didn't bother to carry my camera in. Big mistake. I went back and got my camera, hiked back to the falls to get some shots, and then stopped by the overlooks before heading up to Cumberland Falls. By making two trips to Yahoo Falls instead of one, I just missed what would've been a much more dramatic sunset than what was there when I got to this overlook. Still not a bad scene.

But the whole trip to Yahoo Falls was not in vain. Because on the way in (the first time) I saw a bald eagle for the first time in my life. Well worth stopping by.

This was my first attempt at shooting a matrix, or a panorama with more than one axis. I am pleased with the result. This is a 32 megapixel image.

I had intended to do a few other matrices (is that the correct plural?) but the other ones were too huge for my 4 gigs of ram to process.

Hist. nummers'51: NS 1125 / '89: NS 1122 / 2012: 1125

Interesting landform in the Big South Fork. Not an arch or a cave, but a huge crack in a sandstone cliffline. If you climb that ladder, another good sized area opens and you can see out both sides. It was almost like the clubhouse I always wanted when I was growing up.
