The Exploring Earth Science Teacher Workshop 2017 took place over August 2nd and 3rd. Participating teachers spent two days in Shenandoah National Park learning and participating in activities around the theme "Shenandoah Salamander: Climate Change Casualty or Survivor."

This program is supported by a generous donation from the Shenandoah National Park Association and the Shenandoah National Park Trust.

From this vantage point the colorful layers of the badlands are very apparent. Individual layers can be traced for miles across the buttes in the distance. What caused the rocks to form this way?

Many millions of years ago, a sea covered the middle of the North American continent. As the sea receded, this area became a vast river delta where streams and rivers fanned out and emptied into the sea.

Sediment washed down from the Rocky Mountains came to rest in large, flat sheets across the river delta. The layers built up over time, creating the Great Plains. You are looking back in time as you scan the canyon walls from

top to bottom.

Fort Davis was constructed by the US Army in 1854 to protect travelers along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. After briefly being occupied by Confederate troops during the Civil War, the Fort was left abandoned and deserted. In 1867, a second Fort was built just east of the original one. It remained in commission until 1891. Today, the Fort is administered by the National Park Service, and a number of buildings from the second Fort have been restored.

This system uses thermal soaring to stay aloft all day long. It senses when it's going through a thermal, and when it hits the edge it turns back into it, soaring like a hawk.

They're networked and share data. The concept is a flock of these can be put up, and they'll collaboratively share thermal information and be able to stay aloft all day.

Ferrisburgh, Vermont USA • Rokeby Museum is one of the best-documented Underground Railroad sites in the country. Rowland Thomas and Rachel Gilpin Robinson were devout Quakers and radical abolitionists, and they harbored many fugitive slaves at their family home and farm during the decades of the 1830s and 1840s. Among the thousands of letters in the family's correspondence collection are several that mention fugitive slaves by name and in some detail. – From the Museum's website.

☞ This District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (#74000201), since June 20, 1974.

☞ On December 9, 1997, the National Park Service designated this District as a National Historic Landmark (#74000201).

National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction. [ And only 17 in Vermont.] Working with citizens throughout the nation, the National Historic Landmarks Program draws upon the expertise of National Park Service staff who work to nominate new landmarks and provide assistance to existing landmarks.

National Historic Landmarks are exceptional places. They form a common bond between all Americans. While there are many historic places across the nation, only a small number have meaning to all Americans--these we call our National Historic Landmarks. – From the National Park Service.
