St Nicholas' church is still sunlit but the new DLI bugler statue in Durham market place is already in deep shadow. There's another picture of him here.

"The picturesque church was erected by pioneer families on land purchased from Edward and Mariah Major for one dollar and was originally known as the Wilderness Church.

It was served by ministers from Uxbridge, Goodwood and Claremont.

The cross of remembrance in the cemetery was raised in June 1953 to honour unknown and unmarked graves of the Pine Grove pioneers.

The church was unused for many years, until the Pine Grove Church ladies auxiliary arranged to hold special services: Chirstmas, Thanksgiving and the spring.

Pine Grove Church was recently the setting for scenes for the popular TV series Road to Avonlea.

This sign was erected in loving memory of Della Johnson Moore long standing and guiding hand of Pine Grove Church."

Combination of two images -- merged in PS.

I am not sure if you can appreciate the scale of this sculpture, so I am uploading a couple of perspectives. It is over 2-storeys tall and sculpted from iron. If you can't tell from my modest little picture, it is a dog -- I think it positioned to welcome guests. This is quite beautiful.

Bill Lishman is a local artist/inventor/eccentric who makes interesting metallic sculptures (see the others in this set). He is best known as one of the characters portrayed on Fly Away Home -- a nice, engrossing film about humans imprinting on migratory birds. It's a good renter.

The Unity Monument stands tall outside on the grounds of Bennett Place State Historic Site

The columns are a symbol of the reconciliation and reunification of the United States after the Civil War.

Bennett Place is the site of the last major Confederate surrender, where General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to General William T. Sherman on April 26, 1865.
