St Nicholas's Chapel Ilfracombe

Dating back to 1321 the chapel was built as a place of worship for the people of Ilfracombe living and working around the harbour.

From the middle ages the chapel maintained a light to guide shipping into the harbour. It is still a working lighthouse today and is said to be the oldest in the country. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1540 St Nicholas ceased to be a chapel.

Between 1835 and 1871 a Mr John Davey lived in the chapel as lighthouse keeper raising a family of 14 children. The chapel was also used as a reading room and a laundry. Since then it remained much neglected until 1962 when it was restored by the Rotarians of the town.

.This bench looks onto Croyde Bay North Devon one of my favourite places in this world and one of the best surf breaks in the world ( when it`s working ). We went for a long weekend, lots of rain cold no surf no sun no sunsets, other than that we had a great time.

The old Barnstaple to Bideford Railway Line is now a cycle/foot path making up part of the SW Coast Path.

The path runs over the old track bed and there are still a few reminders of the railway like this bridge near Bideford.

The path was also used to film a programme in the series James May's Toy Stories where a model railway was laid along the path.

Combe Martin is a village and civil parish on the North Devon coast about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Ilfracombe. It is a small seaside resort with a sheltered cove on the edge of the Exmoor National Park. Due to the narrowness of the valley, the village consists principally of one single long street which runs 2 miles (3.2 km) between the valley head and the sea.

The disused railway bridge over Station Hill, now part of the SW Coast Path and adjacent to the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre.

Just beyond the bridge on the left can be seen a private platform for the Royal Hotel.

This point was the end of the line for the model railway built from Barnstaple for the James May's Toy Story Programme.
