Dedicated to “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Travel Channel Chef”

Years ago, we bought Caspian Sea Beluga caviar at the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul market and eat on the street coffee shop: with Turkish coffee instead of champagne and strawberries… And we laughed and said that street food is good enough for Anthony Bourdain, good enough for us... Sadly, Fish-rows were rancid and we left at the coffee shop and waiters were very happy.

Finally, your poor soul is free…May you rest in peace. Hope that God gives your family the courage and strength to bear the loss.

There are few shows on television that actually entertain me long enough to sit through. No Reservations on the travel channel is however, not one of those. If you haven't seen it, Anthony Bourdain, previously a chef in New York, hosts a rather brilliantly produced travel show with a rather uniquely cynical and humorous approach. If there is one thing that would tempt me to absolutely change careers, it would be to travel with this crew. Zero Point Zero production crew...are you there?...hint hint. Have passport, will travel!

Speaking of travel, this was shot at the Fort Lauderdal International airport. As I was making my way to the car upon an arrival from somewhere in the world, this colorful structure around the escalators caught my attention.

Well, the seasons premiere of the show is on, gotta go!

anthony bourdain with anita, one of my blythes! he was really quite nice about posing with her...even more reason to dig the man.

I decided to experiment with the Shepard Fairey style of illustration he used on the popular Obama poster. So being a fan of the Travel Channel's "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" I thought he'd make a good subject.

People ask if I'm selling prints of this piece. I am not. However, if you contact me, I'll provide a digital file you can print for yourself. artbysammo[at]gmail.com

As Anthony Bourdain so eloquently put it, Shanghai is positioning itself to be the new world capitol. The city is in full gear preparing for the up and coming Expo or Worlds Fair. With this incredible city as the backdrop for this event, its sure to be one not to be missed!

Burger infused with "French" onions and gruyere cheese. Topped with more onions and torched gruyere with herb mayo.

I stopped in at 328 Grill back in August by accident, I had actually planned on stopping at another restaurant but walked into the wrong building. What a great mistake to make! I fell in love with the burger and fries from August and decided to stop back and try other items off of the menu.

This time my wife was able to come with me and she tried the "Fo Cheesy Burger" which is a burger served "grilled cheese style" on Parmesan crusted sourdough bread topped with American, cheddar and pepperjack cheeses. She also enjoyed the French fries.

We will be back to try the other burgers and items on the menu

Franklin Barbecue debuted in December 2009 by husband and wife team, Aaron and Stacy Franklin out of a truck in an East Austin parking lot off Interstate 35. The then 30-year old Aaron, whose parents had owned a barbecue stand in his native Bryan, bought a pit from his former employer, John Mueller, a descendant of the legendary Mueller barbecue clan of Taylor and started smoking his own meat. By spring the press had caught on and the lines would snake around the block forcing the operation to a brick and mortar location, located at 900 East 11th Street, in March 2011. Lines form outside the door hours before the 11am opening, and the "sold out" sign usually goes up around 1pm.

In 2010, Bon Appetit hailed Franklin BBQ as the best in America. In 2011, Franklin's was named the best brisket at the Texas Monthly BBQ Festival. Franklin Barbecue has been featured on the Travel Channel television show, Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations. And Aaron Franklin has been a judge on the television reality competition, BBQ Pitmasters.

Yeah, I'll admit. I do watch No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. And yeah, he did go to Chez Maguy -- the little foodie seaside shack of a restaurant in Batroun -- when he visited Lebanon. Great minds think alike. Our experience was marked by a distinct lack of customers and an almost eerie sense of abandon. To put it bluntly, we were the only people there, dining almost as if we were guests in the owner's home. She prepared for us fresh fish and crabs. All the while we sat in silence, watching the sea breeze rattle the tablecloths nearby.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion serves as the centerpiece for Millennium Park and is the new home of the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Grant Park Music Festival, the nation's only remaining free outdoor classical music series. It also hosts a wide range of music series and annual performing arts events. Performers ranging from mainstream rock bands to classical musicians and opera singers have appeared at the pavilion, which even hosts physical fitness activities such as yoga.

The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.

Temple Street Night Market

The pedestrian street starts to thin down quickly after the sun sets and the temp plummets well below 0F. I'm 29 years old but I could feel every joint in my body ache as I walked back to my hotel.

Ben's Chili Bowl, at 1213 U Street, has been an integral part of the U Street Corridor since it was founded in 1958 by husband and wife team Ben and Virginia Ali. The restaurant is located in the former Minnehaha, Washington's first silent movie house, which was established in 1911. Ben's was frequented by both police and protesters during the 1968 Washington, D.C. riots, and is regularly visited by celebrities, most famously Bill Cosby. Then-President-elect, Barack Obama, stopped into Ben's for lunch when he first arrived in his new hometown. Scenes from the films The Pelican Brief and State of Play were filmed in the restaurant.

Ben's signature dish is the Original Chili Half-Smoke, a favorite of Cosby's since the early 1960's. The 1/4 pound half-pork, half-beef half-smoke, a sausage similar to the hot dog, but larger, spicier and with more coarsely ground meat, is grilled, served on a warm steamed bun and topped with mustard, onions and a spicy homemade beef chili con carne. The etymology of "half-smoke" is debated, as the sausage is not always smoked. It may instead refer to the practice of cutting the sausage in half when grilling, or that many half-smokes are 50/50 beef and pork. The "original" half smoke is considered to be the sausage distributed by D.C.'s Briggs and Co. meatpackers, originating in around 1950, though Raymond Briggs started selling his half-smokes circa 1930

The greater U Street Historic District, roughly bounded by New Hampshire Avenue, Florida Avenue, 6th Street, R Street and 16th Street, in the Shaw neighborhood of northwestern Washington DC, is largely a Victorian-era neighborhood, made up of row houses constructed in response to the city's high demand for housing following the Civil War and the growth of the federal government in the late 19th century. The area was predominately white and middle class until 1900, but as Washington became progressively more segregated, the U Street Corridor emerged as the city's most important concentration of businesses and entertainment facilities owned and operated by blacks, becoming known as "Black Broadway" in its cultural heyday. The late 1960's saw the neighborhood begin a fall into decline, marred by violence and drug tacking, that would last well into the revitalization and gentrification of the 1990's.

Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs, opened in March, 2011 at 2148 Larimer Street, after earning widespread acclaim for its stainless steel cart on the 16th Street Mall. Jim Pittenger, aka Biker Jim, was a car repo man before he fired up his gas grill in 1996 and started serving hot dogs made with reindeer, elk, wild boar, buffalo, pheasant, rattlesnake, and veal--all topped with Coca-Cola soaked grilled onions and cream cheese from a caulking gun.

So Kong Dong Restaurant, or Soft Tofu Restaurant, at 130 Main Street, is known for their soondubu jjigae, or Korean soft tofu stew. Every meal starts wth a large stone dolsot of rice, followed by a bowl of cold radish soup and a littany of banchan, or pickled side dishes. The boiling hot stew, in a variety of flavors from pork to seafood to kimchi, comes with a raw egg that is cracked into the pot.

"coffee and a smoke."

Today was an interesting Saturday, not only did I put in 10 hours at work BUT I worked the PM shift vs the AM for the first time in over a year and a half. A different crowd was defiantly had on this overcast gray day that was Saturday morning, and my subject matter was lacking interest. I found myself outside of Osteria Papavero (Poppy Tavern) on East Wilson snapping photos of the place settings through the glass. I heard a voice speak "If you want to take one from the inside you're more then welcome too!"

I looked over to find a man with a friendly smile and a lax attitude towards my strange photo addiction. I smiled and informed him that the glass created a nice barrier between myself and the subject, muting colors and other such random photography things. Then I asked "You must work here, I take it?" He nodded and informed me that he was in fact a cook, and was starting the day out as he usual does with a "coffee and a smoke." As the weather gradually warms up, I'm sure that he doesn't get many breaks so it's best to start the day off on the right foot.

At this point I felt comfortable asking if I could take his photo for inclusion in my 100 more strangers project. He didn't care so we continued on our conversation, as I snapped away and adjusted my settings. As I explained my 365 project as my form of relaxation and meditation I was happy to find out that Matt had his own bit of freedom he looks forward to each year. After a few more weeks of work, and a little more rain Matt will venture out into the forest to hunt for mushrooms (morel to be more specific). As being outside let's him clear his head and just explore and enjoy, it's defiantly a good feeling to have freedom.

I didn't ask for great details but he did inform me that a bulk of his time is taken up a newborn, when he is not working. He and his wife wed in Italy (which makes me wonder if her family has some sort of stake in the restaurant). Having the wedding in Italy was a must as that was the one thing that she (Matt's wife) was not willing to budge on. More family on her side lives there, and thus more cost efficient for them to travel locally for a ceremony then flight/hotel/all other things. While I've never eaten at Osteria Papavero, I think it's worth a shot. If the service is as friendly as Matt was this fine Saturday morning, It'll be on my list of places to dine at this summer.

When I do, I'll probably take my camera and snap photos of the food and refer back to this image. I wonder if I'm the only one who does such a thing who contributes to the 100 Strangers group. If you have an experience like mine, please don't hesitate to comment or private message me. Matt and I parted ways as he went inside to start his shift, and I hope to try the food soon (even if I hadn't gotten his suggestion as to what I should try!)

I'll let Anthony Bourdain take the reins for this one.... (visualize soft French music)

*********************************************************************

Why the French don't suck!

Sure, the French are renowned for their culinary technique and invention. But even more crucial, more precious, is the sensual point of view behind it. That drives not only their cuisine, but their entire existence. It may just save the world.

The most important thing to do the instant you arrive in Paris, is stop. Find someplace inviting, and slip comfortably into the Parisian pace of life.

... This gets right to the kernel of what distinguishes the French. What are the French famous for? Perfume that smells good. Sense of smell. Food that tastes good. Sense of taste. Art, architecture. Visual sense. Ok, there's really no explanation for their crap pop music. But, you know, 3 out of 4 is not bad. These are all matters of the senses. It's their attitude towards pleasure, and sensuality. And food, in general, being the best example.

... Eating is, and should be, a joyous occasion. As should the use of all your senses. So America, perhaps you should try it. Maybe duck out of the office when the boss isn't looking. Or call in sick for that boring meeting. Pull up a chair in a local joint. Grab a tasty beverage, and eat a ham sandwich. REALLY eat a ham sandwich. You just may find you not only love the French again; but you may also love life.... and ultimately... the world.

- No Reservations - Season 1, Episode 1 ..... Netflix ROCKS btw. ;)

*****************************************************************************

Not a shot that I had intentionally planned on doing; but I couldn't pass up the opportunity for this. I was standing in line for my first visit to the pastry shop in the France pavlion..... a 20 min wait.... but oh so worth it!!! :) Although I knew the shot I wanted, I didn't want to look like I was blatantly taking pictures of strangers (I was as close to this table as it seems). So this was shot "from the hip". Luckily, the first attempt came out exactly as I had pictured; maybe even a little better. I think the somewhat lower pov helped too.

As I post this, I have to admit that it is virtually impossible for me to think of anything profound to say about this. The majestic beauty of Paris was just how I remembered it not a few short years ago. There is timeless beauty in this incredible city that always

possesses me to wander for hours upon arrival. The seductive scenery of this amazing city has not intimidated me and my description of this image however, it is the discraction on my TV as I type. You see, the best show ever is on now.......No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain, and they are is Spain. Sorry, gotta go....C Ya, I'm outta here........

I pulled out my copy of Kitchen Confidential to re-read after I heard the heartbreaking news. I was backpacking through Southeast Asia when I first read his book. I found all these bus and train tickets inside that I'd used as bookmarks during the trip. I think this is a fitting tribute to a man who inspired so many people to set out on adventures. I feel like I've lost a friend.

This is a screen grab from one of my favorite shows; Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations. In this episode he visits Cleveland, OH. First stop, Skyline Chili.

This got me thinking about one day maybe taking a serendipity across America, eating at places I had heard about. About 15 or 20 years ago I read in Outside magazine that the best Clam Chowder could be had at Moe's in Coos Bay, OR. I'll go there. Skyline Chili in Cleveland, OH. I'm there. Primanti Bros in Pittsburgh, PA for one of their sandwiches. That too!

Just yesterday, Twinkle informed me that Anthony Bourdain is in town. And I replied, "Anthony who?" Twinkle then told me a brief info of this very interesting guy.

I found out that he's the guy from "No Reservations" (Travel Channel). He travels and explores other cultures. Actually, he is best known as the man who eats exotic food. I, personally, haven't seen the show yet but will definitely try to catch it once they air his Philippine trip.

And now, the guy who I just known briefly yesterday, is in front of me. Most probably, off to his next challenge in discovering the Philippines. Good luck Anthony! May you burp your way here. ;-)

I'm not sure if that's Ivan Mandy beside him. Ivan is the famous Binondo tour guide.

A random turn of my head caught this Leith spot - as seen in an episode of "No Reservations." J. and I tried it out, naturally. She braved the "King Rib" and I went for the fried haggis and an Irn Bru.

In 1888, a Russian immirant family established a Jewish delicatessen at 205 E Houston Street on the Lower East Side. Aside from the advent of refigeration, little has changed at Katz's deli since then, as it still retains a grungy sheen to its throngs of tourists, regulars and celebrities. Today Katz's makes about 5,000 pounds of corned beef (cured for 30 days, compared to commerciall prepared 36-hour corned beef), 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs a week--the old-fashioned way, on the premises.

During World War II, with owner's three sons overseas and a family tradition of sending food, Katz's encouraged parents to "Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army." To this day, they will still ship anywhere in the world. It became one of the deli's famous catch phrases, along with "Katz's, that's all!" which is still painted on the side of the building.

Katz's has played a pivotal setting in a number of movies. Most notably, when Meg Ryan faked an orgasm in "When Harry Met Sally..." The table at which she and Billy Crystal sat is marked with a sign that reads "Where Harry Met Sally...hope you had what she had!" Other famous scenes include Johnny Depp meeting his FBI contact in "Donnie Brasco" and Judge Reinhold grabbing a bite in Offbeat. The walls present a photographic guest list that's a venerable "Who is Who" in culture, sports, entertainment and politics.

Well, to be exact it is:

terrine de boudin noir béarnais rôti

- blood sausage terrine, sweet apple and cinnamon salsa

This where things got really good. I saw a father-young daughter couple enjoying this dish next to me ( BTW, good luck having a child in the US eat a blood sausage - forget kids, most grown-ups wouldn't do it either!); I asked for one as well...

Oh, my Heavens!!! It was lights out good - a bite to remember... I have no idea how that terrine was made, but it was smooth and silky inside and exceptionally well seasoned - not quite with quatre épices, albeit similar and milder. Terrine was slightly charred outside, but not burned into oblivion - more like seared just right. Salsa was served on the side - pleasant combination of slightly roasted apples and cinnamon.

This is easily one of the best bites of 2012, and I can say that only a month into the season.

Starting as the original franchise of the 1923 landmark, Papaya King, Gray's Papaya was opened in 1973 at Broadway and 72nd street by Nicholas A.B. Gray, who invented the formula for the tropical fruit drinks that are paired with snappy grilled hot dogs. Shedding the King name after the initial five year contract, they have three west side locations including thise one at West 8th and 6th, a corner made (sort of) famous by the Rolling Stones in Dance (Pt. 1), offers up the same "Recession special" of two hot dogs and a drink. Inflation hit in 2006, though, when the price was raised from $2.95 to $3.50. New Yorkers from Lou Reed to Mario Batali to Al Franken swear by Gray's over its ancestor and numerous knockoffs; and New York Magazine called it the "best of the Papaya posse."
