This is one of the longest migrating raptors in the planet. The annual migration covers around 22,000 Km - 30,000 km / 14-18,000 miles starting from Siberia / Northern Mongolia to India and onward to South Africa. From the coasts of India, they fly over the sea to Africa covering around 3-4000 kms nonstop without touching the ground for 5-6 days.
The birds are making a stopover briefly at a hill station near Mumbai for a couple of weeks and 100's of bird lovers like me make a visit to watch them and get some pictures.
These falcons seem to prefer these wild lavender fields where they hunt for insects and caterpillars. They spend sometime in them walking around and looking for insects. Such fields are spread over the lakebed and the birds keep flying between them.

Blackpoll warblers are rarely seen in the summer since they nest in remote regions of northern Canada where few birders venture. Fall is the best time to find a blackpoll warbler here in the States since there's a new crop of young birds heading south. By the way, blackpoll warblers hold the world record for long-distance flight over water without stopping for any songbird - over 1800 miles or 2000 km. This nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean takes 3 days - amazing! They spend the winter in northern South America. Notice the food that this young blackpoll warbler is fueling up on - that very tiny aphid that it picked off the quaking aspen leaf!

Back when Pan Am was running the SJWA/WASJ it was usually pretty nice as they didn't stop at NMJ, most of the time. Back in December of 2010 SJWA or SJPO was about to pass under Rt. 202 in Hampden with traffic from the NBSR. Meanwhile in the distance a C5 Galaxy can be seen making its approach to land at BIA.

A Pacific golden plover patrols the Oahu shoreline and reestablishes his territory after a five-month summer breeding season in arctic Alaska. With his seasonal mating plumage fading this shorebird looks for food to replenish his body fat. The return trip traversed approximately 3,000 miles of open ocean requiring an exhaustive 3 to 4 days and nights of nonstop flight. Incredibly, some kōlea will continue their marathon semiannual migration to oceanic islands of the southern Pacific resulting in an annual round trip total of about 15,000 miles. Their fledglings set off from the tundra searching for an island and a suitable territory a month or two after the adults have departed. Many fledgling birds probably miss landfall and perish at sea. Survivors are superb navigators with territorial fidelity, using the stars and the earth’s magnetic field to find their way over the featureless ocean to the same small patch of land every year. Like most transoceanic migratory birds, they may use the earth’s magnetic field visually with the magnetoreception molecules of cryptochrome in their retina.

I just love this view of the mountains when I'm going into Missoula! The picture makes the mountains look so small and believe me, they're not!! lol...these really are the signature mountains of Missoula, MT. :) I don't know what kind of trees these are or what they're gonna be used for....really has me stumped!
Man it's been snowing for two days now nonstop....not looking forward to my early morning drive to work on probably slick nasty roads in the mornin !!!! :(

I couldn't wait to get this one uploaded! As I was watching the transition of Venus across the Sun, this plane just happened to be in the right spot at the right time as I just happened to press the shutter release!
This will be the last transition of Venus across the Sun in our lifetimes! I hope you got to see some of it! :-) I am actually still in process of taking photos of it as I write this description!
