Happy Transgender Day of Visibility 2021! Being an out, visible trans person, especially a nonbinary person, is a many-layered thing. I love it because I spent many many years hiding and suppressing a lot of myself (not just gender stuff) out of fear of rejection and that takes an enormous toll on a person. Being able to have the knowledge that everyone in my life knows and loves me for who I actually am is (obviously) so much more freeing and validating. Plus, being queer is awesome and it would be sad if no one got to see that 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But at the same time, it requires a lot of work to always have to be announcing, disclosing, explaining, correcting, educating, advocating, and/or choosing when it does and doesn’t feel worth it to do so. There is also still real danger in being visibly trans. I’ve been lucky to not have been harmed up to this point, but it’s something I think about a lot when I’m out, especially by myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I don’t believe it will always be this way, and that’s part of why I’m so visible. I believe that my visibility helps move things a tiny bit more towards an inclusive, accepting world. I may only reach a small number of people on my own, but those people will hopefully then go on to do the same, and so on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But we still have a long way to go. There are a lot of anti-trans bills in the works right now in the US (some already in motion), many targeting trans youth who are already at risk. Please tell your elected representatives not to support harmful anti-trans legislation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re a cis ally, also take a few minutes today to think about how you can make a space where you have even a tiny amount of power or authority — your work, school, a club or organization, place of worship, even your own little social circles — more inclusive and affirming for trans folks. Please understand that we are everywhere and you shouldn’t be waiting till you know we’re there asking for help. Make things better now so when we show up we start off feeling like we belong (‘cause we do 😊). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And to all my fellow trans and nonbinary folks out there (visible or not), thank you for being who you are! ️‍⚧️️‍⚧️️‍⚧️ via Instagram instagr.am/p/CNGKjL9j2wf/
