News Flash! I've been nominated for Best Female Lead for this play, in the Isle of Wight County Press Amateur Theatre Awards.

Arch enemies, Widow Quin and Pegeen Mike, square up in J M Synge's Playboy of the Western World.

I have had to go red for this play. I just bleached the colour out of it and as I have natural red in my very dark hair, I didn't have to put another colour on.

The play is 'Playboy of the Western World' by J M Synge. Set in County Mayo in 1907.

This past year Mateo recorded the film for the Academy Award-nominated “Juno” Inspired by the loss of a friend's daughter, Mateo made it his mission to raise money for uncompensated care at Seattle Children's. The journey began eleven years ago and continues today with Mateo producing extraordinary annual benefit concerts. In 2008 it took place at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

Mateo: “While on the journey of unfolding what An American Symphony would sound like, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a photographer I have come to admire. He sees our American landscape a little different than the rest of us. His portrayal of America is beautiful, immeasurable, and each image holds a surreal quality. I've worked with Gavin Farrell to handpick each image to be displayed across the entire backdrop of the symphony hall synchronized with each performance.”

Gavin: WHAT A NIGHT! So many talented musicians and artists; they actually had to extend the length of the stage: Symphony composer Mateo Messina, the band Eisley, the Evan Sisters, Matthew Schoening, the North West Symphony, the Pacific Children’s Chorus, the North-West Chorale, The Whittier Elementary School Choir, the Total Experience Gospel Choir, Mariah McManus, and it felt like the entire city of Seattle was there! I was honored that my work could be a part of this amazing experience.

The Knox County Courthouse was individually nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Knox County was formed on March 1, 1808 from Fairfield County. Sometime between that time and 1809, a courthouse was constructed on the southwest corner of the Public Square, near the center of the intersection of Main and High Streets. This first courthouse was a simple log structure with clapboard siding standing at a single story, with a footprint of 15 x 18 feet. Although it had a sizable fireplace, located at one end of the building, the chimney was made of nothing more substantial than mud. The earthen floor and grease-paper windows also attested to the harsh conditions faced by the early settlers of the county.

This courthouse was only used for a few years before a more substantial building was constructed of brick on the northeast corner of the Public Square. The second courthouse was ready for occupancy in April of 1812, and was situated in such a way that it faced both Main and High Streets, with a set of double doors for each entrance. This new building rose two stories high, perfectly square in size, with a pyramidal roof that was topped by a small cupola, which was nothing more than a small square box to house a bell. At the time of construction, the Public Square was approximately ten feet higher than it is today. To make the ground more level, the earth along Main Street was graded sometime in 1828 by a gentleman of the name Norton. During the process, Norton came too close to the courthouse, compromising the foundation to such an extent that the entire building came crumbling down before the supporting stone wall, as contracted to James McGibney on October 28, 1828, was even began.

Plans were immediately set in motion for a third courthouse, which was constructed between 1828 and 1829, this time on the northwest corner of the Public Square. This two-story brick building had a large portico that faced Main Street, supported by tall, white fluted columns and raised a couple of steps to the entrance. A small cupola topped the roof of the building. The embankment on which it stood was so severe that the ground reached to the base of the 2nd story in the rear of the building. This allowed natural light to penetrate the full basement, occupied by various stores and shops, from both the east and the south. The courtroom was located on the 1st floor, flanked by a couple of offices, while the 2nd story was reserved exclusively for office space. Many thought that this third courthouse was very poorly constructed, which proved to be true on April 9, 1854. On this date, a severe storm raged through Mount Vernon, destroying the courthouse. The high winds ripped off the roof and its heavy timbers. Rafters and shingles were strewn across the Public Square several hundred feet, and the brick chimney collapsed, crashing through the floors down to the basement. What remained was nothing more than a partial shell of a building.

Construction of the fourth and final courthouse began in 1855, and was completed by 1856 at a cost of nearly $40,000. No longer residing on the Public Square, its new location and solid construction led many citizens, remembering courthouses past, to comment that they finally had a courthouse that "appears solid and substantial as if it might withstand the storms of centuries." nearly 160 years after that fateful day in April, it seems that they were right.

This current courthouse was designed by architect Daniel Clark, who favored the Greek Revival style, as many public buildings of this time were designed throughout the United States. It rests on a heavy stone foundation, and rises two very tall stories. The main entrance, facing East High Street, is composed of two large, fluted stone Doric columns, flanked by two brick pilasters on either side with square stone capitals. The large pediment is supported by a series of stone triglyphs with brick metopes in between, and the central ocular window is divided into quarters and is surrounded by foliated scroll. Between each set of pilasters is a single window, one for each story. The 1st-story windows possess pediment hoodmolds supported by small brackets. The large cupola, placed directly above the entrance and the second rendition of the building's roofline, stands two stories in height. Because of its height and the building's position near the top of a rise, its four clock faces are visible from a long distance. The base of the cupola consists of a fanlight with heavy stone lintel on all four sides. At the very top of the rounded copper cap, detailed by two lancet-like embellishments, is a small, square finial.

The interior of this building contains a staircase with two flights of stairs located on the east side of the 1st floor. Original floor coverings have been replaced with asphalt tile, but some of the original mosaic tile remains in the west doorway.

Christine and I arrived in the primate section just as it was feeding time. This guy is the zookeeper, the chimps responded in a way that showed they obviously knew him quite well, or that they were very aware that he is in a position of authority since he controls their food and so they respond.

Nevertheless, I nominate this guy for cutest zookeeper in the world!

Since moving to our appartment at Kongsgårdmoen (Kongsberg) I have always had sunflower seeds and other food available for birds to eat in my garden. To my big frustration the birds dissappeared together with the leaves of the Birch tree. This late Autumn/early Winter has been slightly more promising - and no single day more so than Yesterday, December 08.2013. No less than 12 different species came to visit me during the short grey day.

What thrilled me absolutely most was a flock of 7-8 European Goldfinches (nominate) (Stillits / Carduelis carduelis carduelis). Here with a Green Finch.

About

New swing sextet, New York oldest Vibe driven sextet, and still performing "salsa that keeps the dancers moving and the Dj's pumping"

Biography

ABOUT THE NEW SWING SEXTET

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965... The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.

Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region. The Palladium and other clubs were dancing to the music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and the Jose Curbelo Orchestra while Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, and Cal Tjader, among many others, had already established their unmistakable sounds. In the early sixties, every other city block in New York had a Latin band and a doo-wop group. Blend these many elements together and you get the influences that shaped the New Swing Sextet and their contemporaries, including Johnny Colon; the Lebron Brothers; Willie Colon, Joe Bataan and Pete Rodriguez groups that helped pioneer a new street sound (which would eventually become Latin Boogaloo and Salsa). The New Swing Sextet would join the Alpha Artists of America (under the Management of Jose Curbelo) and ultimately record 4 long albums (and have a separate Best of the New Swing Sextet) all under the Cotique label. The band regularly performed on popular TV shows such as El Club de la Juventud con Polito Vega; The Tito Puente Show with host Sofi; and El Show de Myrta Silva among others. It was a magical time to be a performing Latin artist in New York City. A fraternity of great musicians and legends in the making, routinely performing together at the great dance clubs of the day, including: The Corso; LaMaganette; The Chez Jose; La Mancha; The Colgate Gardens; The Psycho Room; The Tropicoro; The Cheetah and at all the great battle of the band venues such as The Hunts Point Palace; The Manhattan Center; The Riverside Plaza Hotel and The St. Georges Hotel. Over a ten-year period the New Swing performed all summer-long at popular resorts and at the summer home of Latin music: las Villas. The band has also toured extensively and performed at world famous venues such as the legendary Apollo Theatre; the South Street Seaport and Webster Hall in New York City. Recent performances to large audiences in Montreal, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, proved that the band still has plenty of sabrosura to keep the dancers on the floor.

Nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award for his album Sweet Wahine, Don was at the Waimea Music Exchange in Waimea (Kamuela) yesterday giving a group of Cornell University students slack key guitar lessons.

This session was part of Cornell University's EES (Earth and Environmental Systems) Program, which besides its basic premise of Kumu Pa’a I Ka ‘Aina (Knowledge and understanding that comes from the land.) includes learning about elements of Hawaiian culture.

This is an outtake photo from yesterday's photo session. The story behind this, which I will be writing, will appear in North Hawaii News.

Hah! Suspiscions confirmed!! The Jay is now Bird Species #13 who is customer at Tweety's Diner. I was there 90 minutes at noon and business was booming. And the Jays came in, saw me, melted away as they are very shy. But as I stood still for a long time one came back and landed in one of the aspens that grows in the center of the diner. I got two (butt-)shots before it wised up and disappeared, and the second photo is this. I think it's rather good, actually, it's my very best of this species. (That doesn't say much, really, as I have almost none)

Picardy Place Historic District is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places for its significance under Criterion A for community development and Criterion C for architecture. The neighborhood is a well-defined example of a Post-World War II residential development in Memphis, Shelby mid-century modern Minimal Traditional Style with Colonial Revival details. The dwellings constructed within the neighborhood are excellent examples of Minimal Traditional housing erected during this period with modest exterior stylistic elements which was a common trend for this type of residential architecture.4 Interesting to this particular neighborhood is the limited number of design/plans that the property owners could choose from for their new homes. They each selected a set plan then added their own stylistic elements, if any, as well as later additional bays or modifications to the structures.5 The Picardy Place subdivision, established in its current state in 1945, showcases the architecture of a struggling America trying to recover from the cultural and economic turmoil of the Great Depression and World War II. Occupied by twenty-three small houses similar in style, this subdivision is a testament to the architectural and economic trends of the 1940s. Additionally, the Picardy Place Historic District retains integrity of design, feeling, location, setting, and materials and meets the registration requirements as outlined in the Historic Residential Resources of Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee Multiple Property Submission.

A project nominated from Sri Lanka has won the first place in the BBC World Challenge '09 with a record breaking number of votes, the organizers announced today. Safe Bottle Lamp Project, from Sri Lanka, received the first prize of US$20,000 at a special ceremony held at The Hague on December 5th.

The project, a brainchild of Dr. Wijaya Godakumbura, is aimed at reducing burn injuries caused by the tipping over of improvised kerosene lamps. Dr. Godakumbura, who as a surgeon, has witnessed terrible results of these accidents and designed a safe bottle lamp that does not tip over and spill the kerosene causing the fire. To date, his small foundation has handed out about 775,000 of these safe lamps to the people.

Many families in Sri Lanka rely on the improvised kerosene lamps made from bottles that can tip over and cause fire. The safe bottle lamp is made of slow-cooled glass that is unbreakable and has a steady flat bottom to prevent tipping over. World Challenge 09 is a competition organised by BBC World News Limited aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grass roots level.
