Biography
ABOUT THE NEW SWING SEXTET
A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965... The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.
Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.
The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region. The Palladium and other clubs were dancing to the music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and the Jose Curbelo Orchestra while Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, and Cal Tjader, among many others, had already established their unmistakable sounds. In the early sixties, every other city block in New York had a Latin band and a doo-wop group. Blend these many elements together and you get the influences that shaped the New Swing Sextet and their contemporaries, including Johnny Colon; the Lebron Brothers; Willie Colon, Joe Bataan and Pete Rodriguez groups that helped pioneer a new street sound (which would eventually become Latin Boogaloo and Salsa). The New Swing Sextet would join the Alpha Artists of America (under the Management of Jose Curbelo) and ultimately record 4 long albums (and have a separate Best of the New Swing Sextet) all under the Cotique label. The band regularly performed on popular TV shows such as El Club de la Juventud con Polito Vega; The Tito Puente Show with host Sofi; and El Show de Myrta Silva among others. It was a magical time to be a performing Latin artist in New York City. A fraternity of great musicians and legends in the making, routinely performing together at the great dance clubs of the day, including: The Corso; LaMaganette; The Chez Jose; La Mancha; The Colgate Gardens; The Psycho Room; The Tropicoro; The Cheetah and at all the great battle of the band venues such as The Hunts Point Palace; The Manhattan Center; The Riverside Plaza Hotel and The St. Georges Hotel. Over a ten-year period the New Swing performed all summer-long at popular resorts and at the summer home of Latin music: las Villas. The band has also toured extensively and performed at world famous venues such as the legendary Apollo Theatre; the South Street Seaport and Webster Hall in New York City. Recent performances to large audiences in Montreal, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, proved that the band still has plenty of sabrosura to keep the dancers on the floor.

Since moving to our appartment at Kongsgårdmoen (Kongsberg) I have always had sunflower seeds and other food available for birds to eat in my garden. To my big frustration the birds dissappeared together with the leaves of the Birch tree. This late Autumn/early Winter has been slightly more promising - and no single day more so than Yesterday, December 08.2013. No less than 12 different species came to visit me during the short grey day.

Governor Murphy nominates Dr. Angelica Allen-McMillan to be the Commissioner for the New Jersey Department of Education in South Orange on October 20, 2020 (Edwin J. Torres/ Governor’s Office).
"Freudian slips are eruptions of the subconscious mind."
This odd illustration accompanied a Boston Globe piece that was reprinted in the Ottawa Citizen, written by the Pulizter Prize-nominated journalist and writer, Alison Bass .The essay was about the tendency for many to make Freudian speech gaffes, as a possible result of mental battles waging in the subconscious mind. Bass reported that professor Daniel Wegman believed people might often say the wrong thing in their attempt to suppress thought patterns. Yet different forms of communication often occur, even when one is trying to suppress these thoughts.
Fascinating piece. Conversely, I would approach this subject in a completely different way if I had the opportunity to do it again. Because when it comes to the ideology of the Freudian mind, the options to visually translate such concepts are seemingly endless.

Brasil, on 28 December 2012, nominated Mr Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Pascal Lamy, whose term of office expires on 31 August 2013.
According to the WTO procedures for appointment of Director-General, the nomination period will close on 31 December 2012.
A formal General Council meeting will be held on 29 January 2013 where candidates will present themselves to the membership.
The selection process will conclude with a decision by the General Council no later than 31 May 2013.
PROCEDURES FOR THE APPOINTMENT
OF DIRECTORS-GENERAL
Adopted by the General Council on 10 December 2002
The General Council, acting pursuant to Articles IV.2, VI.2 and IX.1 of the WTO Agreement, agrees to the following procedures for the appointment of the Director-General.
Conduct of the appointment process
1.The appointment process shall be guided by the best interests of the Organization, respect for the dignity of the candidates and the Members nominating them, and by full transparency and inclusiveness at all stages, building on the best practices established over the past years with regard to internal transparency and participation of all Members.
2.The overriding objective of Members in this process shall be to reach decisions by consensus.
3.The process leading up to the decision by the General Council to appoint a Director-General shall be conducted by the Chair of the General Council in consultation with Members and in accordance with the procedures set out herein.
Facilitators
4.The Chair of the General Council shall be assisted in this process by the Chairs of the Dispute Settlement Body and the Trade Policy Review Body acting as facilitators.
5.The Chair and the facilitators shall act impartially and objectively, and conduct their work in a transparent manner.
6.The Chair and the facilitators shall aim to encourage and facilitate the building of consensus among Members, and assist them in moving from the initial field of candidates to a final decision on appointment.
Time-frames for the process
7.The appointment process shall start nine months prior to the expiry of the term of an incumbent Director-General with a notification from the Chair to the General Council. The process shall conclude with a meeting of the General Council convened not later than three months prior to the expiry of an incumbent's term, at which a decision to appoint a new Director-General shall be taken.
8.Members shall have one month after the start of the appointment process to nominate candidates. Nominations shall be submitted by Members only, and in respect of their own nationals. The candidates nominated shall then have three months to make themselves known to Members and to engage in discussions on the pertinent issues facing the Organization. The remaining two months prior to the conclusion of this process shall be devoted to selecting and appointing one of the candidates.
Qualifications of candidates
9.In broad terms, candidates should have extensive experience in international relations, encompassing economic, trade and/or political experience; a firm commitment to the work and objectives of the WTO; proven leadership and managerial ability; and demonstrated communications skills.
Nomination procedure
10.Nominations and supporting information shall be addressed to the Chair of the General Council and received not later than one month after the start of the process. These documents will be distributed to Members as they are received. Immediately after the close of the nomination period, the Chair shall communicate to Members a consolidated list of the candidatures received.
11.Nominations shall be accompanied by the curriculum vitae of the candidate and any additional supporting information.
12.Where a serving Director-General decides to seek reappointment, he or she shall so notify the Chair of the General Council before the start of the process, and shall thereby be considered to be a candidate. The Chair shall inform Members of the candidature of the incumbent Director-General, in order that they may take this into consideration in submitting their nominations.
Representativeness of candidates
13.In order to ensure that the best possible candidate is selected to head the WTO at any given time, candidatures representing the diversity of Members across all regions shall be invited in the nominations process. Where Members are faced in the final selection with equally meritorious candidates, they shall take into consideration as one of the factors the desirability of reflecting the diversity of the WTO's membership in successive appointments to the post of Director-General.
Meeting with the candidates
14.As early as possible after the close of the one-month nomination period, candidates shall be invited to meet with Members at a formal General Council meeting. Candidates will be invited to make a brief presentation, including their vision for the WTO, to be followed by a question-and-answer period.
Consultation process
15.In the final two months of the process, the General Council shall proceed, through a process of consultations, to narrow the field of candidates and ultimately to arrive at its choice for appointment.
16.In arriving at its choice, the General Council shall aim to reach a decision by consensus.
17.The Chair, with the assistance of the facilitators, shall consult all Members, including non-resident Members, in order to assess their preferences and the breadth of support for each candidate. The ultimate aim of the consultation process shall be to identify the candidate around whom consensus can be built. In order to do this, it may be necessary to conduct successive consultations to identify the candidate or candidates least likely to attract such a consensus.
18.The outcome of the consultations shall be reported to the membership at each stage. It is understood that the candidate or candidates least likely to attract consensus shall withdraw. The number of candidates expected to withdraw at each stage shall be determined according to the initial number of candidates, and made known in advance. This process shall be repeated in successive stages on the basis of a revised slate of candidates each time, with the aim of establishing consensus around one candidate.
19.At the end of the final stage of the consultative process, the Chair, with the support of the facilitators, shall submit the name of the candidate most likely to attract consensus and recommend his or her appointment by the General Council.
Recourse to voting as a last resort
20.If, after having carried out all the procedures set out above, it has not been possible for the General Council to take a decision by consensus by the deadline provided for the appointment, Members should consider the possibility of recourse to a vote as a last resort by a procedure to be determined at that time. Recourse to a vote for the appointment of a Director-General shall be understood to be an exceptional departure from the customary practice of decision-making by consensus, and shall not establish any precedent for such recourse in respect of any future decisions in the WTO.
Term of office
21.The Director-General shall be appointed for a term of office of four years, and shall be eligible for reappointment for a further term not exceeding four years. There shall be no expectation of automaticity in the reappointment.
22.In order to ensure continuity at the senior management level, the terms of office of the Director-General and of the Deputy Directors-General shall be staggered, such that the terms of the Deputies expire subsequent to the expiry of the Director-General's term.
23.In the event of a vacancy in the post of Director-General, the General Council shall designate one of the existing Deputy Directors-General to serve as Acting Director-General until the appointment of a new Director-General. The Chair of the General Council shall initiate, as soon as possible, a process for appointment of a new Director-General, in keeping with the procedures set out herein, and may establish expedited deadlines as necessary in consultation with Members.
Remuneration package
24.The remuneration package for Directors-General shall be established by the Committee on Budget, Finance and Administration and subject to the approval of the General Council. It shall not be negotiable with a Director-General-designate.
Contract of appointment
25.The contract of appointment, including the remuneration package, shall be signed jointly by the Director-General-designate and by the Chair of the General Council acting in the name of the WTO.

I hereby nominate myself for dumbass of the year. Here's the story:
I was returning from Tucson (about 1.5 hours from home) with some friends and there was a bad accident on 10 FWY and traffic was at a standstill for as far as the eye could see. We could see roads on both sides and trucks were using the one on the right side. A whole bunch of cars did a U-turn and headed back to the previous exit to catch said frontage road. I stopped for gas and asked the attendants whether the roads on either side cold be used. They said yes. (I guess I should have been more specific with my question).
So we take off on the road less traveled (left side frontage road). Approx 3 miles down a sign says "Pavement ends in 100 feet". Perhaps this is why the truckers used the other road. At this point sensible people would have turned back. Not us. So the dirt road starts veering away from the freeway. No big deal. How hard can it be? We're in an "all wheel drive" :-)
We are now in the middle of cotton fields, on dirt roads - and no sign of life. We come to a T intersection. To the left is a stop sign and likely a real road. To the right is all dirt and the general direction of the freeway. My friend Ben suggests left. I suggest we take the more "adventurous route". Sure, why not? Road starts to get worse - and I am fishtailing a bit and drifting off due to the camber of the road, but trying to keep a good momentum. It worked for about 1 mile and then we just drifted off into the slush and the poor Honda stopped on it's belly in the mud!
Middle of nowhere. No sign of life. We didn't even know what exit we left. But we could see the an Air Base - so after a few failed attempts at digging it out, I start walking (about 3 miles) to the air base to find our location. Meanwhile Ben calls another friend named Gary and manages to describe landmarks. I get to the airbase, find out our location and call the Auto Club (who said that such idiocy was covered but it would be at the tow driver's discretion as to whether he would be willing to attempt a tow.) While I am on the phone with AAA, Gary show up! We head back to the stranded Honda. Gary also almost gets stuck but in 4 low, after rocking back and forth, he gets out. And after a lot of mud spraying in all directions, he tows us out and guides us back to civilization.
So - moral of the story - when your instinct tells you there is a reason everyone else is taking the "other" road, listen to your instincts :-)

Picardy Place Historic District is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places for its significance under Criterion A for community development and Criterion C for architecture. The neighborhood is a well-defined example of a Post-World War II residential development in Memphis, Shelby mid-century modern Minimal Traditional Style with Colonial Revival details. The dwellings constructed within the neighborhood are excellent examples of Minimal Traditional housing erected during this period with modest exterior stylistic elements which was a common trend for this type of residential architecture.4 Interesting to this particular neighborhood is the limited number of design/plans that the property owners could choose from for their new homes. They each selected a set plan then added their own stylistic elements, if any, as well as later additional bays or modifications to the structures.5 The Picardy Place subdivision, established in its current state in 1945, showcases the architecture of a struggling America trying to recover from the cultural and economic turmoil of the Great Depression and World War II. Occupied by twenty-three small houses similar in style, this subdivision is a testament to the architectural and economic trends of the 1940s. Additionally, the Picardy Place Historic District retains integrity of design, feeling, location, setting, and materials and meets the registration requirements as outlined in the Historic Residential Resources of Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee Multiple Property Submission.
