Crashing waves during a brief break in the rain this afternoon. Fabulous noises from the waves as they hit the shore and then as the water dragged back across the shingle.

With the sun getting close to setting the glinting has started as this eastbound Erie Lackawanna passes a semaphore as it approaches Marion, Ohio with 4 E8's making beautiful noise - February 14, 1976.

taken from my hotel in Charleston SC, last year.

This sightseeing bus ended up standing at a diversion sign. There was something wrong with it as the lights were flashiing and it made a horrible alarm noise. I don'tthink it just missed the diversion turn.

Waterfalls of the Bolshoy Rufabgo stream are a cascade of waterfalls in the Maykop district of Adygea (Russia), 2 km from the village of Kamennomostsky, upstream of the Belaya river.

Waterfall "Noise" is located to the left of the trail, it meets guests and escorts. This is a high and beautiful waterfall that will never tire of pleasing visitors to the gorge.

Not a perspective I would think of typically for shooting the Milky Way, but I noticed it transiting right between some trees near me on my Jemez Reflections shoot. My lantern makes the impression that the trees are being lit by a campfire.

When the world gets too noisy, a little stroll in the quiet grandeur of nature can be good for us.

Project 365-120

Night photography is one of my favourite areas. Owing to the 23:00 curfew we had during the pandemic, night photography was in practice impossible for me since I usually leave home between 10 ~ 11 pm and return between 1 ~ 2 am.

With its high ISO and little noise, the Sony A7 seems to have been designed thinking of night photography. At ISO 6400 one can use shutter speeds 1/60 to 1/250 with apertures f/4 to f/5.6. I imagine, and I am still to try it, that in camera image stabilisation will allow the use of 1600 ISO, which is very likely to produce even better images.

I find night photography with (b&w) film much more challenging, but the results very rewarding.

No people , no traffic, no noise - the village at night.

If you live in a city or a large town you don't get this experience. In fact it can be a little unnerving if you are not used to it.

It was not within my plans to make a portrait and less in the foreground of a sheep but it is that fate is capricious and it put us on our way neither more nor less than a sheep named: BLACK NOSE OF VALAIS. And it is that these are a Swiss breed of sheep, originally from the canton of Valais. This breed is, together with the Roux du Valais sheep, the only horned sheep breeds in Switzerland. We went up a road if it can be called that with an incline and curves that not even in the Tourmalet and we saw that there was a shepherd with the sheep branch. Go! Go! I said Layla, this is a must see! We parked and walking we went to the pastor. Layla stayed behind and I walked over to him and we had a chat with an English vocabulary from National Geographic. A special mention to that shepherd who was only one from the heart and not for nothing else and who very kindly attended to me and explained to me what his day-to-day life was with the sheep.

Tri-Mount Trio

June 29, 1965: The L&N Knoxville & Atlanta Division headend crew for Extra 1507 South makes the walk from the enginemen’s crew room at Corbin, Ky. to their mounts for this trip. The GE U25C on the point was only two weeks old, but the two grungy Alco C628s behind had been in service for eleven months. The trio with tri-mount trucks will take a Knoxville Turn out of the west yard at Corbin with a heavy train of southbound mixed freight. After swapping ends at West Knoxville, they’ll head north (as Extra 1411 North). While the steam-era roundhouse was razed in the late 50s, the turntable was still in service (on the right).

"If you want to see the last Interstate unit to leave Andover, you'd better get up here!" The voice on the other end of the phone was Sonny Burchfield, an operator for the Southern at the newly combined Interstate-Southern yard at Andover. As the evening sun set behind the southwestern Virginia hills on Oct. 5, 1965, I drove up to the engine facility to find a single Alco RS-3, Interstate Railroad No. 32, burbling away all by itself. Her nine sister units were already in Atlanta, or enroute soon to be repainted in Southern's black-and-off-white livery and placed in yard and transfer service. The Tri-X Pan black-and-white film in my camera was just barely fast enough to record a few handheld shots in the fading light, but this was history, and I had to have a photo. Later that night, No. 32 left Andover in tow for Atlanta, where it joined its nine sister units for continued service in Georgia and the Carolinas.

To celebrate my 18th birthday, I decided to process one of my favorite Hubble images! This was taken back in 2009 to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy by WFPC2. Given that it was taken by such a low-sensitivity sensor, this image actually had a whole lot of noise to deal with. I spent a while carefully removing hot pixels and cosmic rays to make the image look better. In case you’re wondering what exactly you’re looking at, here’s a little explanation about the galaxies:

Arp 274 is a system of three galaxies that appear to be partially overlapping in the image, although they may be at somewhat different distances. The spiral shapes of two of these galaxies appear mostly intact. The third galaxy at far left is more compact, but shows evidence of star formation. Two of the three galaxies are forming new stars at a high rate. This is evident in the bright blue knots of star formation that are strung along the arms of the galaxy on the right and along the small galaxy on the left. The largest component is located in the middle of the three. It appears as a spiral galaxy, which may be barred. The entire system resides at about 400 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Virgo. The colours in this image reflect the intrinsic colour of the different stellar populations that make up the galaxies. Yellowish older stars can be seen in the central bulge of each galaxy. A bright central cluster of stars pinpoint each nucleus. Younger blue stars trace the spiral arms, along with pinkish nebulae that are illuminated by new star formation. Interstellar dust is silhouetted against the starry population. The pair of foreground stars on the right are inside our own Milky Way.

Many thanks to those who have already supported this project in the first 24 hours. There is still a long way to go, but with your help we will succeed!

John Berger said in his famous BBC series from 1972 "Ways of seeing" that the most important thing about paintings themselves is that their images are silent, still. The project PLACES WITHOUT NOISE came precisely from this. That the most important about those photographs was that they communicated something totally different from what they represented. These photos were no longer a window that showed me a memory or a moment already lived, otherwise they are an open door to a new and unknown place.

Thanks for supporting and sharing!!

Here are the Lightroom versions of the last three sunset images developed from RAW file vs the out-of-camera JPGs.

I lifted Exposure and Shadows to show more detail in the dark areas while trying to preserve the colors in the sky.

They are also processed with Topaz Sharpen, which does a superior job on overall sharpening and noise control.

Some may like the softer, darker JPGs and some probably appreciate seeing more shadow detail and sharpness in the trees or horizon.

Let me know what you think.
