Cinnamon rose. Cinnamon rose can be distinguished from other rose species in our area by the pairs of stout, sharp, curved prickles produced at the nodes that are larger than the few prickles produced throughout the rest of the smooth stems. This species is non-native. Interestingly, all specimens recorded in New England produce showy flowers with double corollas. Several double-flowered cultivars are commercially available.

These lovely roses were taken in our garden this summer 2024.

A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.

The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek ρόδον rhódon (Aeolic βρόδον wródon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan varəδa, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr.

The leaves are borne alternately on the stem. In most species they are 5 to 15 centimetres (2.0 to 5.9 in) long, pinnate, with (3–) 5–9 (–13) leaflets and basal stipules; the leaflets usually have a serrated margin, and often a few small prickles on the underside of the stem. Most roses are deciduous but a few (particularly from South east Asia) are evergreen or nearly so.

The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, which usually has only four. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red. Beneath the petals are five sepals (or in the case of some Rosa sericea, four). These may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear as green points alternating with the rounded petals. There are multiple superior ovaries that develop into achenes. Roses are insect-pollinated in nature.

The aggregate fruit of the rose is a berry-like structure called a rose hip. Many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips, as the flowers are so tightly petalled that they do not provide access for pollination. The hips of most species are red, but a few (e.g. Rosa pimpinellifolia) have dark purple to black hips. Each hip comprises an outer fleshy layer, the hypanthium, which contains 5–160 "seeds" (technically dry single-seeded fruits called achenes) embedded in a matrix of fine, but stiff, hairs. Rose hips of some species, especially the Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa), are very rich in vitamin C, among the richest sources of any plant. The hips are eaten by fruit-eating birds such as thrushes and waxwings, which then disperse the seeds in their droppings. Some birds, particularly finches, also eat the seeds.

Rose thorns are actually prickles - outgrowths of the epidermis. While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called "thorns", they are technically prickles — outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem). (True thorns, as produced by e.g. Citrus or Pyracantha, are modified stems, which always originate at a node and which have nodes and internodes along the length of the thorn itself.) Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species such as Rosa rugosa and Rosa pimpinellifolia have densely packed straight prickles, probably an adaptation to reduce browsing by animals, but also possibly an adaptation to trap wind-blown sand and so reduce erosion and protect their roots (both of these species grow naturally on coastal sand dunes). Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer. A few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points.

It is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae. Members of the genus are known as buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. The familiar and widespread buttercup of gardens throughout Northern Europe (and introduced elsewhere) is the creeping buttercup Ranunculus repens, which has extremely tough and tenacious roots. Two other species are also widespread, the bulbous buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus and the much taller meadow buttercup Ranunculus acris. All three are often regarded as invasive weeds. Buttercups usually flower in the spring, but flowers may be found throughout the summer, especially where the plants are growing as opportunistic colonizers, as in the case of garden weeds. The water crowfoots (Ranunculus subgenus Batrachium), which grow in still or running water, are sometimes treated in a separate genus Batrachium. They have two different leaf types, thread-like leaves underwater and broader floating leaves. In some species, such as R. aquatilis, a third, intermediate leaf type occurs. Ranunculus species are used as food by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the Hebrew character and small angle shades. Some species are popular ornamental flowers in horticulture, with many cultivars selected for large and brightly coloured flowers. Buttercups are mostly perennial, but occasionally annual or biennial, herbaceous, aquatic or terrestrial plants, often with leaves in a rosette at the base of the stem. In many perennial species runners are sent out that will develop new plants with roots and rosettes at the distanced nodes. 12268

Every morning when I wake to the day

On a pitch black lie

Big big, brick brick

Wall wall, in silence

When the time wraps

The cold ropes of the seperation

Thick thick, knot knot

Node node, the loneliness wraps me in it's hand

One day I fade, one day I bloom

I fall myself, I get up myself

I cry in silence, I hush in silence,

One day I die, one day I live

I burn out myself, I burn by myself

I get shot in silence, I bleed in silence, I bleed

Every side of me is a pack of lies, my hands my arms are broken

I stand somewhere

One day I fade, one day I bloom

I fall myself, I get up myself

I cry in silence, I hush in silence,

One day I die, one day I live

I burn out myself, I burn by myself

I get shot in silence, I bleed in silence, I bleed

One day I fade, one day I bloom

I fall myself, I get up myself

I cry in silence, I hush in silence,

One day I die, one day I live

I burn out myself, I burn by myself

I get shot in silence, I bleed in silence, I bleed

A great golden digger wasp out feeding on a rattlesnake master flower. Named after the golden hair on the head and thorax and the habit of females of digging a tunnel into sandy areas to lay their eggs on a paralyzed captured insect. Despite the warning coloration, this is not an agressive species.

The view across the city in the previous shot was open and freeing. Turning about 120 degrees though… The numerous buildings with all their different designs, windows, sizes coming together makes me feel as if I’m caged. There’s something of a processor in this landscape, too. Or maybe I’ve seen TRON too many times.

As for the roof itself, Michael and I had to constantly step over a mass of pipes that covered the floor. We followed a few of them around, looking down the side of the building as they individually disappeared, floor by floor.

We experienced the worst vertigo of all on this particular rooftop. We were next to another tower, separated by about two metres of empty space, all the way to the ground. This adjacent tower was about double the height. For whatever reason though, being up in the sky and looking up even further really got the legs wobbling. Eurgh. It was fun being up there, but I wasn’t too sad to head back down to the ground.

I know, I know. Hong Kong, again! I’m not wealthy- I just keep spending all my money on going there. I don’t think they say ‘Fourth Times the Charm’ but this trip was just that - a success. For almost the entire time I kept my mental health issues at bay. It was a good trip. After three disasters - It is really nice to say that.
