Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses. From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek (NL) were relocated using lowboy trailers to the area.

The Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions of the Netherlands and an anchor point of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The neighbourhood attracted approximately 1.6 million visitors in 2014.

Geschichte der Waterpoort

Die Waterpoort (Wassertor) wurde 1613 als Teil der Stadtbefestigung errichtet.

Ursprünglich diente sie als Tor in der Stadtmauer und ermöglichte den Zugang zur Stadt Sneek über das Wasser. Sneek war damals ein bedeutendes Handels- und Schifffahrtszentrum in Friesland.

Das Tor ist ein klassisches Beispiel der niederländischen Renaissance-Architektur mit zwei achteckigen Türmen, die durch einen Bogen über dem Wasser verbunden sind.

Das charakteristische Design vereint sowohl defensive als auch dekorative Elemente und symbolisiert den Reichtum und die Bedeutung von Sneek während seines goldenen Handelszeitalters.
