I've actually finished the first sock, but don't have any pictures yet of the completed item. The pattern is Nine to Five, and was chosen by my dad. The needles are my beloved KnitPicks wooden DPNs, size 2. The purple stripey sock I'm wearing underneath the green one is, alas, not a handknit, but I like it anyway.
I think it may be time to clean the office!?

I used to work in Hennepin County Govt center when I took this picture. This is a magnificent building. During this time an American flag was hung from the lowest bridge connecting the towers. This one right from under the American flag - Freedom and hope above.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The building was designed by the architectural firm of John Carl Warnecke & Associates. It was dedicated in 1973 and completed in 1977. It is 403 feet (123 meters) tall and has 24 stories. When viewed from the Northeast or Southwest sides, it takes on the appearance of a stylized letter H. This shape serves as the logo of Hennepin County. Each side of the "H" is a separate tower. The towers are connected by catwalk bridges on several floors. The whole is enclosed by glass windows to form an atrium.
The Southeast side is known as the court tower. It houses courtrooms, county attorney offices, and the Hennepin law library. The Northwest side houses county administrative offices such as social services and county records."

Office life is absurd. The politics in particular that are involved with randomly clumping hundreds of different personalities together, taking themselves seriously in stripy shirts looking at Excel spreadsheets and having pointless meetings for eight hours a day in modern day glass and steel air-conditioned cages. During the day they all appear quite different but by night when you can peer inside, you'll see they're all very much the same.
Throw in a certain amount of fear for people's jobs, limited promotional opportunities (a different set of spreadsheets at another desk and a fancy title) and dangle the elusive 'bonus' carrot in front of everyone and sit back and enjoy the theatrics!
so often a wreck. this is typical, littered with starbucks cups, old birthday cards, a cluttered computer screen, postal stickers, a passport application (the beige papers), my mini-purse full of heaven knows what, and a wonderful view to the west, regent street.

"The Hennepin County Government Center Public Service (skyway) Level is one
of the largest and most traveled public gathering places in downtown
Minneapolis. Some 10,000 people pass through the Government Center every
day and the reflecting pool has always been a popular stopping place to rest,
meet friends, and wait for appointments in Hennepin County District Court or
for one of the many county services provided.
• Seen are the five bronze fountainheads that incorporate elements drawn from hydroelectric turbines, saw blades, gear mills and other industrial imagery related to the historic and contemporary use of the county’s waterways, resting on a platform
of water-jet-cut black granite.
• Five laminar-flow nozzles mounted at the sculptural base that create glass-like,
curving rods of water that can be internally illuminated, in the manner of a
fiber-optic strand, producing a spot of color at their landing places."
