To See the Stars

~~~~~
After a fun day of kayaking, I ran over to the north side of Big Bear Lake, standing in really wet sand and mud to see the Milky Way arching over Big Bear Solar Observatory. The lake is at 6752 ft. in elevation and is good for seeing the evening stars, but even so, I was surprised to see this much of the Milky Way despite the glow of the town's lights and an 86% moon that had just risen just ten or fifteen minutes before. And the light of the moon is mostly what is illuminating the left side of the observatory. I was also pleased to see that the wind had subsided, creating beautiful reflections. You can see smoke from the devastating Apple Fire drifting over the San Bernardino Mountains. I also want to mention that despite the fact that we were up here for our one-year anniversary, my wife insisted that I run out and take a photo of the observatory anyway. She figured she was going to sleep anyway, and besides, she knows that night photography is like breathing to me. All the same, I made sure I woke up reasonably early so I wouldn't ruin our day.
As the Milkyway rises really early now we headed into the Wheatbelt to this location initially to grab some blue hour shots for a blend but quickly realised we wouldn’t really need them.
Once nighttime began which on this night was 6:56PM we began shooting our compositions for the night and with the core already at 50° altitude we had to work reasonably quickly before it passed directly overhead at around 9:30PM. This was my second comp of the night and is a three row forty frame panorama at 20mm set amongst the amazing and photogenic boulders, some bigger than the size of a bus! The lighting from the crescent moon was great to work with as it began descending in the west. So for once we were all done and dusted for 10 o’clock and headed home after spending a short but fulfilling night under the Milkyway.
And Then There Was Crimson
~~~~~

Hey, here's a photo from one of my night photography safaris! This is a vintage Ford Model A that I stumbled upon on my travels. I used a handheld light to illuminate the car and capture its mysterious aura during this long exposure photo. I used some warm white light, but the darkness and strange red light on the headlights and windshield lend an extra touch of intrigue and mystery. I hope you like it. There was a High Wind Advisory this particular evening. While I went to talk to someone for a minute, gust of wind over 45 mph blew over my Nikon D750. It's not really night photography unless you have some of these mishaps, I suppose. I chose to photograph indoors for a while with my other camera.

I love this time of year. The Milky Way arches like a rainbow over the eastern horizon. There is a small window to catch it before dawn, but then you can transition to sunrise shots. Then go to bed. :)

For my last night under the Chilean starry sky, I had decided to turn my creativity on and test everything I could think of. This photo was part of this. Despite its gigantic height, the 4-meter-Blanco telescope is still a dust compared to the vastness of the Universe. Here, the milky way is like a border we can’t cross, a horizon we can’t reach. Also, the bright orange dot, planet Mars was the objective of the picture too, almost perfectly aligned with 47 Tucanae, the Small and Large Magellanic clouds. Notice the pretty intense airglow activity which gives an overall orange veil in the sky. The reflection of the galactic bulge and mars can be seen onto the dome of the observatory.

The picture was taken from CTIO (AURA/NSF), and is a 14-stitched-picture panorama. Single 15 seconds exposure without star tracker.

The total resolution of this image is 110 Megapixels (not visible on this version)

The Blanco telescope was the first 4-meter telescope ever built in Chile (1974). It is part of the larger Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, located atop a 2700-meter mountain and owned by AURA institution. Still today, this big optical monster makes great strides in astronomy, and is not hiding in the shadow of its other friends (or enemies). Currently, the Blanco telescope is well known for 2 of its most powerful instruments:

- a 520 Megapixels camera (DECAM) aimed at studying how the dark energy interacts with deep space.

- a multi-object spectrograph enabling to analyse the chemical composition of several stars simultaneously.

Sorry about the garish colors! This is not quite what I had in mind when I went to "Fantasy Canyon," but this is what I was presented with (well, almost); and, when you are handed lemons, you try and make lemonade. Let me explain...

For years I've wanted to travel to Fantasy Canyon and photograph their amazing claystone knobs and pinnacles (located on BLM land, about 27 miles or 43 km south of Vernal, Utah). I had envisioned their eerie shapes photographed under natural starlight. Unfortunately, I discovered that there was a super bright mercury-vapor security light from a petroleum pumping station less than 2,000 (609 m.) feet away, casting it's ugly blue-green light pollution onto all the features of this interesting canyon!

By using one of my low-level lights at the opposite angle to the mercury-vapor light, and with a complimentary color (yellow-magenta or red) I was able to replace the shadow side with this contrasting color and salvage the image—that is, if your tastes are are into Sci-Fi. So often, life presents us with twists that we never wanted or planned for. It's how we react to the unexpected that often defines us.

TECHNIQUE & EXIF: Stacked & Blended exposures • Canon 6D + Tamron 15-30mm @ 15mm • Milky Way sky: 15 stacked exposures (in Starry Landscape Stacker to reduce noise) at 15 sec, f/4.0, ISO 10000 • Foreground: 4 focus stacked exposures (in Ps) at 120 sec, f/5.6, ISO 2500 with low-level lighting • Sky & foreground blended in Ps layers. This 5-image sequence give a tutorial on the technique.

At this time of the year, many nightscapers pack away their cameras and say that the Milky Way season is over. They couldn’t be more wrong! The core season might be over, but the winter Milky Way is visible all night and makes an excellent photographic target.

With its abundance in hydrogen emission nebulas, the "bad side" of the Milky Way is actually more colorful than its brighter summer counterpart, especially when captured with an astro-modified camera.

Orion is a real gem: The sword is dominated by the famous Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula. Both are glowing in red Hydrogen and blue Oxygen light. Orion’s belt harbors the Horsehead Nebula, a dark dust cloud that is silhouetted against another deep red nebulosity (IC 434) and right next to it, the bright Flame Nebula shares the same field of view.

This whole complex is surrounded by the elusive Barnard’s Loop an interstellar gas cloud that is ionized by the stars inside the Orion Nebula.

Another prominent part of the Orion’s nebulosity, is a ring around Lambda Orionis (Meissa). It measures about 12 degrees across and probably is the remains of a supernova explosion, now ionized by the ultraviolet radiation from Meissa itself and some of the surrounding hot stars.

Those blessed with dark skies might even be able to record the very elusive Witch Head Nebula, an extremely faint reflection nebula, believed to be an ancient supernova remnant or gas cloud, illuminated by the nearby supergiant star Rigel.

Of course there is not only Orion. Other prominent Hydrogen emission Nebulas are the Rosette Nebula in the constellation Monoceros, the Seagull Nebula near Canis Major, the California Nebula in Perseus, Cassiopeia’s Heart and Soul Nebulas or The Elephant Trunk Nebula in Cepheus.

The whole winter Milky Way is dotted with open star clusters. Some are naked eye objects like the Pleiades, the Hyades, the Beehive Cluster or the Double Cluster and many of them are part of the famous Messier Catalogue (e.g. M34 – M38, M44 –M48, M67). Some of these open clusters are surrounded by gas clouds and the ionizing radiation from their stars powers many of the emission nebulas mentioned above.

Furthermore, autumn and winter is galaxy time. Our galactic neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, is the most prominent example, but there are many more, like the Triangulum Galaxy (M33), pictured here to the east of Andromeda.

Fed up with deep sky objects? Then you might like this: Under dark skies you might be able to observe the gegenschein. The backscatter of sunlight by interplanetary dust causes this optical phenomenon. It forms a slightly more luminous, oval glow directly opposite the Sun within the band of the luminous zodiacal light. The intensity of the gegenschein is relatively enhanced, because each dust particle is seen in full phase.

Even closer to home, you might be able to see meteors (from the Leonids or the Alpha Monocerotids in November or the famous Geminids in December) burning up in earth’s atmosphere and of course you might also be able to capture some colorful airglow.

Over the week of the Nightscaper Conference we had a lot of interesting conversations about the social media influence on and aspects of environmental impact. There's no doubt that the mass exploitation of the "outdoors" has seen a tremendous uptick in recent years and the accessibility of hobbies like Photography has lead to a decline in the outdoors experience (not to mention the degradation and damage of a lot sensitive areas) for many people, myself included. Having said that, "we" (me included) are also part of the problem, how do we balance finding really interesting locations to shoot and trying to share our results with the social media attention that place gets, ultimately resulting in more cars, more feet, more damage to that specific area. Ultimately it comes down to just not sharing location information anymore. And so I preach this, pick a road and drive down it, chances are you'll find something interesting to take a picture of and you don't have to worry about sharing the location. Anyone can do this, we don't need to crowd out spots and throw the local area into disarray, find your own dirt road and cool location and keep that spot to yourself.

This image was a lot of work, I'm working on something that I don't think anyone else is really doing, utilizing cooled astro cameras to do landscape astrophotography. In this case an ASI533mc Pro was paired with a Voigtlander 21mm Nokton. The tricky part is the stretching of the fits files as well as the color balancing, it's difficult to get a consistent stretch from exposure to exposure and since there are no color profiles for these cameras it's difficult to get good/consistent color information. It's a work in progress and I hope I can develop it into something people might be interested in down the road. Until then, I'll continue to struggle.

14 subs went into this image, sky shots are 2 minutes at f2.5 and Gain 0, foreground shots are 2 minutes at f1.4 and gain 100.

Last night Kay and I returned to Ouray to watch the 4th of July Fireworks. We had a great vantage point to watch a great show. This is such a beautiful mountain town.

My final image of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), right above Isla de La Palmas impressive cloud waterfall. Right in the fields at the foot of the Cumbre Nueva, where wind and clouds frequently interact to form this marvelous phenomenon, I was lucky to get these beautiful rarities - Cascada & Comet - combined for a long exposure panorama.

Gusts of wind made my life difficult at this task. In post processing, I decided to add 15 x 90s tracked images from the following night as a stack of the comet. The foreground is a panorama of 2x 120s exposures. All images taken with my Nikon D810 and AF-S 85mm f/1.8 Lens.

Red Rock Coulee Natural Area is managed by Alberta Parks. It is located just 30 minutes SW of Medicine Hat.

The red rock formations are called concretions and were formed in prehistoric seas as layers of sand, calcite and iron oxide collected around a dead organism such as shells or bones. They grew as the circulating waters deposited more layers. Some measure up to 2.5 metres across and are considered some of the largest in the world.

This image is a stack of 8 * 20 seconds for the sky and 4 * 2minutes for the ground. Captured with a Canon fully modified EOSR with a visible+Ha filter. Modifications performed by Spencer's Camera & Photo.

The Moon and Venus 2021-10-09

I watched Venus set into the rainbow sky every night for a week. On this evening it was accompanied by the Waxing 16% Moon. The Moon was 2 degrees above Venus at Twilight.

Shot with a fully modified Canon EOS-R, visible + Ha filter and a Canon 100-400mm lens at 400mm.

As I was capturing this image, I imaged the Star Ship Enterprise emerging from the cloud and hitting light speed into the heart of the Milky Way. Yeah, I'm a ScFi nerd.

However, this scene was created naturally by low clouds in the valley below Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.

We took a trip to the top of Cottonwood Pass last night. The night sky was as clear and bright as I have even seen. We weren't too sure of the ground/snow bank we were standing on, but faint heart...

Ken expertly drove around the switchback without using breaks to create this cool light trail.

Have you ever seen anything like this modified VW camper with a bug roof? I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. This way, it's more fun than AI-generated art. Photographed during the last night of our Nelson Ghost Town Night Photography Workshop in Nevada. This may appear in my fourth book of night photography, history, and experiences.

Red Rock Coulee is a Provincial Natural Area in southeastern Alberta, Canada, 54 kilometres south-southwest of the city of Medicine Hat and 26 kilometres south of the hamlet of Seven Persons on Alberta Highway 887.

The main feature of this natural landscape is the large spherical reddish boulders (concretions), some of which measure 2.5 metres (10 ft) in diameter and are considered some of the largest in the world.

Each image is a stack of 8 * 20 seconds for the sky and 4 * 2 minutes for the ground. Captured with a Canon fully modified EOSR with a visible+Ha filter and an Irix 15mm lens. Modifications performed by Spencer's Camera & Photo.
