There's something special about an up-close encounter with a herd of Mountain Goats and this September evening was exceptional. The road to the top of Mount Evans (labeled as the highest paved road in North America) is usually closed by early September but with their later than usual opening for the season and a little help from Mother Nature, rangers left it open for guests to enjoy all the way into October...

Yellowstone's boardwalk at the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring was incredible after the stars came out. Without any wind, the boardwalk seemed to float between the reflected stars below and the sky filled with stars above. And then the steam gave it an even more other-worldly experience.

"Fall Romance"

This is at the bottom of where two canyons meet. It was the perfect setting. I feel like this would be a beautiful place for an Autumn wedding. The fall colors, soft light, flowing water all really come together to make this a magical scene in my opinion. I want to go back here and just sit and relax and enjoy the fresh air and sound of the water cascading over the rocks. The experience was a kind of peace that one rarely finds.

Labor day weekend was a hot one in Moab, Utah. When we left the trailhead on Monday night it was 95 degrees at 7:30pm. We took the hike slow and arrived just after sunset. This allowed us to get into position for when the Milky Way was visible. I was in charge of the lighting and after setting the Low Level Light panel up for the group I noticed these shadows that the light made on the rocks. With the moon just getting ready to set I fired off a few shots to showcase the whole scene.. Milky Way over Delicate Arch, the setting moon and part of our group in the lower right corner. Everyone walked away with big smiles on their faces.

Captured during one of our night photography workshops in Bodie in late August last year.

In life, there are a lot of places where we can see a balance. There's a balance between artificial and natural lighting and another one between day and night. But then on another level, there's a balance of life between humanity and nature. And then there's the balance between our planet earth and all the external forces that affect it.

For me, it's all a delicate balance that I love to show off in my photography. This image was captured at the beginning of twilight (before sunrise) from Delicate Arch during one of my night photography workshops in Arches National Park.

Like much of my night photography, this is a twisted take on a classic: Turret Arch as seen through North Window. But like Ol' Blue Eyes, I had to do it my way.

Worth noting in this photo was the night's wild airglow, which was prevalent on a few nights at around this time.

And just a little backstory, because I can't resist. I had met a friend (Jake Rogers) at the Balanced Rock area, where a couple of other photographers had just showed up as we were leaving. As we were talking by our car, one of the photographers came over for some small talk. I mentioned that we were leaving Balanced Rock, so that they could have the place to themselves. With that, Jake and I left. In my rear view mirror I noticed that the other two photographers were getting back in their vehicles. They ended up following us over to the Windows area (where these arches are) and following us ALL THE WAY UP THE TRAIL TO THIS LOCATION. If you've ever shot this location, you'll know that this is not a very large area. It was kind of a surreal moment. They were far enough behind us (both while we were driving and while we were hiking) that I kept thinking, "There's no way they're just following us, right?" Well, they were. Right up to a tiny little ledge, where they managed to wedge themselves in right next to us after spraying their lights all over. There was literally no one else at Balanced Rock, Double Arch, or several other arches on the way there.

What's up with that, anyway?

Mount Evans may be close to Denver's light pollution, but at 14,000 feet in elevation, the view of the stars above is very clear. In this image, Milky Way stars trail across the sky above the Meyer-Womble Observatory near the top of the mountain...

I'm not sure if it's the mountain-top perspective or the fiery history but I've always found the Crest House to be interesting. Add Milky Way skies leaning at an angle that compliments that unique roofline and this scene on Mount Evans really comes to life!

I'm happy to announce that I've released my Night Photography Workshop schedule for 2014.

I've been getting rave reviews on my workshops this year at Arches National Park in Utah and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and will gladly continue running workshops in those two locations. For 2014, I've added Canyonlands National Park to the Arches workshops (in what felt like a natural addition) and a new Night Photography Workshop featuring a combination of Grand Canyon National Park and Sedona in Arizona.

All 6 of these Night Photography Workshops feature the same combination of classroom training and in-field training that made my multiple night workshops in 2013 so successful.

May 23-26, 2014 - Arches & Canyonlands National Parks

June 19-22, 2014 - Rocky Mountain National Park

August 17-20, 2014 - Arches & Canyonlands National Parks

August 30-September 2, 2014 - Grand Canyon National Park & Sedona

September 25-28, 2014 - Rocky Mountain National Park

October 16-19, 2014 - Arches & Canyonlands National Park

Check out the student written testimonials for more information and of course let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to help.

This image comes from a single exposure (that's right, just one exposure) that combines ideal settings for the milky way skies together with subtle light painting - again, all in the same exposure. These and other techniques are included in all of my night photography workshops including this event at Rocky Mountain National Park and my multi-night event at Arches National Park.

On this last night of my night photography workshop in Arches & Canyonlands, rainy skies cleared out which opened the door to Milky Way skies and Mesa Arch. I had a plan for that spot that I'd been sitting on ever since I got inspired by a really good photographer named Abe Blair at that same location years earlier.

And while I don't often get into the pictures of my students, I knew my students would enjoy this one. Sure enough, I couldn't help but notice the audible gasps and "holy cows" from students when they captured images that night - from all three of the locations we stopped at...

Okay, I'm just having fun with the title but it sure looks to me like I'm pointing out where that big Milky Way is up above. Of course, it's a lot easier to see for a camera than it is with the human eye but if you have any idea what to look for and you're in a place without a lot of light pollution, it's pretty easy to find.

And if you've never seen the Milky Way with your own eyes, don't miss your chance. It's something I think everyone should see before they die...

Shooting the Milky Way in the spring can be a lot of fun because of the Milky Way's low position in the sky as it rises up in the eastern skies. Sure, the early morning timing may not be as convenient but this low position in the sky can be used to capture some interesting photographs in a way that you simply can't do in other times of the year....

"The Hunter Sleeps" - New on my website today with many others.

The Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception was built in 1887 and sits high on a plateau in the Central USA. I skipped fall colors in Colorado to chase the Hunter Moon as it set behind the church on the morning of Oct 14th, 2019. I spent 3 days in the area doing photography waiting for this special moment. All the days were crystal clear except for this particular morning. I feel fortunate to have got this shot before the Moon dipped into the thick bank of clouds you see near the horizon. The date the image was taken means a lot to me as it's a special day in my family. It's moments like this that make 5-9hr drives worth it...This is a location I will be returning to in 2020 to shoot the Milky Way.

Conditions for this Milky Way Panorama workshop were already good and on this last night at Delicate Arch, we were super fortunate to see Aurora Borealis. But this was just the prelude… the real show got started soon after this sequence was captured. What a thrill that was!

August 31, 2019 - Here is our Finale Light Painting with Steel Wool Sparks for the night, at the Borrego Springs Resort Parking Lot. What an exciting ending to our Photography Workshop!

Milky Way and shooting star over Turret Arch in Arches National Park. Visit www.nightphotographyworkshop.com for all of our upcoming workshops. 2 have already sold out.

I don't think it was just me that felt something special at this spot at Firehole Lake in Yellowstone National Park. With the gentle steam and the glowing stars reflecting in the calm water, the view was stunning. But what really got my attention were all the sounds of Yellowstone at night. The breeze was really gentle so it carried all the sounds of the wild right to our ears - making a wonderful experience.

In this image, Jupiter looks like it's leading the Dark Horse (nebula) to the waters of Firehole Lake.

An abandoned hayrake sits beneath the starry skies of Fort Rock Oregon.

Interested in taking photos like this? Join me next month for my final workshop of the summer, a single night in Fort Rock, Oregon.

Sometimes it's all about the journey and this spot shows that as good as any I've seen. It's so easy to walk right past this spot on the way to the North Window but we like to make the most of the stair stepped walkway especially when the Milky Way is in position. When they line up right, they are a sight to behold… and they give our students a great opportunity to capture a masterpiece.

With open spots in April, June, August, and September you won't want to miss our exciting workshop events - so you can learn how to shoot the Milky Way like a pro. April is a great time to catch the Milky Way arcing like a rainbow as shown here over the North Window in Arches National Park. See more details at www.NightPhotographyWorkshop.com.

There's something about the area around Nefertiti Rock in Arches National Park that I find really interesting. I don't know if it's that pharaoh shaped rock or the gentle warm light that illuminated it… either way, when that Milky Way started sweeping across the sky above, the scene really came alive....

There is a lot more to this post... see the rest of the story, how I got the shot, and get free wallpaper from www.coloradocaptures.com/nefertiti-slide.

A rising Orion creates a halo around Balanced Rock, which looks a little bit like an alien, if you ask me.

This was taken a couple of nights before my Giant Skies Panorama Photography Workshop last week. Good times, and thanks to those of you who a) came out for the workshop and b) just happen to be reading this description.

I've really grown to enjoy night photography in the winter, which isn't exactly the traditional night photography season, at least in my area of the northern hemisphere anyway. The skies are usually clear, the weather is cool or cold, and, most importantly, NOBODY'S OUT AT NIGHT.

I think this is the very first 2:1 vertical crop that I've ever published. I do enjoy this nearly 180-degree vertical view, so maybe I'll do a few more.

I was all set to leave this area as I'd just captured the shot I wanted from Castle Geyser in Yellowstone National Park… but something told me to look a little closer. I could barely see much of anything without any moon or other light source but I could barely make out what looked geyser spray from some distant geysers. So when I captured a quick test shot looking down Geyser Basin, I was blown away by all the geysers I saw spraying up into the night sky. I'm sure glad I saw all those geysers further down the basin before I headed out!

We won't be including Yellowstone National Park in our 2017 Night Photography Workshop schedule but we will be doing so in 2018. Sure, this takes some patience but we'd rather do it with everything lined up just right. That said, we just released our 2017 Workshop Schedule timed with December Discount Days which gives students 20% off workshop fees paid all this month. Check out the event details at www.NightPhotographyWorkshop.com and enter the discount code 'december' on our checkout page to get your discount.
