Oh the irony that her first outfit has a cat on it. I didn't pick it out, this is what the NICU nurse gave me to put on her :)

Diaper rash is the inflamed skin or dermatitis that comes into sight as a bright red skin’s patchwork on the baby’s bottom. It is very common in infants and frequently causes distress for both baby and mom. The main symptom is a red rash on the buttocks. Your baby seems to be in pain and difficult to console, then you can consult Dr. Deepa Aggarwal, the best child specialist in Gurgaon at Mayom Hospital. This place provides the 24*7 hours service.

after 1 month the babies finally get to meet outside the womb

Amy and I were allowed to visit Alexandar in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of St. Mary's close to three hours after his birth.

Shortly after this visit, the doctors performed a bronchoscopy and diagnosed Alexandar with long segment tracheal stenosis.

Emily fought off 3 attempts to intubate before reaching a compromise with the medical staff. They attached a CPAP instead.

Nicu Alifantis-Decembre-1992

working on some stuff for our bereavement and care by parent room in the nicu. these will be 3 12x12s printed and each framed. do you think they work ok together?

since we were back in grand rapids for the holidays we thought it would be fun to make a quick trip to the nicu where odin was born on the fourth of july. nicu nurses rarely get to see the children they take care of after they leave the hospital and really enjoy the opportunity to see the wee ones as they grow.

it's hard to believe it's been five years(!) since we last visited. odin as just learning to roll over and i completely forgot that we brought a camera and printer as a gift ( amusing since i'm still remembered as the dad who took a lot of pictures ).

it seems the downturn in the local economy has reduced the birth rate which has, in turn, reduced the numbers of premature births, so there were only two nurses on duty when we visited and a mere four beds filled. but we sure were happy to find that those two nurses were two of our favorites during our stay.

in addition to her calming presence, nurse jan, on the right, is the kind of nurse who will take a video for your while you're away from the nicu ( see her giving odin a massage in day 13: the fourth. part two. ). and i still remember nurse cathy b cuddling with odin on our last day in their nicu before odin was transferred to another hospital for emergency surgery.

both are fantastic, compassionate, wonderful nurses and human beings and it was great fun to get a chance to see them again.

kris and i, of course, weren't allowed to go into the nicu, but they bent the rules a bit for odin and took him to bed 4 to show him where he spent the first 78 days of his life (out of 96 days in intenstive care ). odin told us later how he could see the tiniest hands and feet in the bed.

it's hard to get a good picture when you're standing outside a neonatal intenstive care unit but odin does his best to liven it up by sticking his tongue out in yet another attempt to stymie my attempts at photography.

This is Isaac the day he was admitted into the NICU, 2 days old. I couldn't really look at this picture for a long time, and I thought about it yesterday while looking at my big, healthy 1 year old. So, for the record, here he is, all wired up, the healthiest baby in the NICU.

Our little man is 1 week old. He has been off his ventilator for a day and doing well on the CPAP.

grandparents got to spend some time at the NICU.

That was our home for 77 days....good ol bay 18 and 19.

After 3 weeks in the NICU, the girls finally had all NG and CPAP tubes removed from their face at the same time. We took this opportunity to have some fun in our own little photo shoot. What you don't see here is the fact that the heart monitor machines and medical equipment is just outside of the picture. The bed sheet behind them hides the oxygen machine and crib.

One of the nurses brought in a Dahlia so we placed this between them while they were sleeping and got a beautiful picture.

I extracted the dahlia into a separate layer and colorized that to a nice purple color while desaturating the girls and background.

Today I became a father! Eight weeks earlier than expected. A little girl weighing 3lb 1oz

My babies spent 77 days in the NICU. Most of that time they were hooked up to monitors, pumps and IVs. With lots and lots of wires and tubes.

Dr. Dennis Mujsce, right, looks on as Katlin Lucas holds onto her daughter Madelynn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Penn State Health Children's Hospital on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. Coincidentally, both mother and daughter were born premature and spent time in the Children's Hospital NICU in Hershey. Dr. Mujsce helped care for both of them during their time in the NICU.

she had mild jaundice so into the tanning bed she went for 24 hrs.

the NICU can be a scary place at first glance but not so much after you know that all the cords and tubes have a purpose in helping your baby survive the unsurvivable...

as his nurse donna said today, eric enjoys making a liar out of her. just yesterday she said that it would be a few days before they discontinued his IV drip and had him solely on breastmilk.

but today when we arrived at the nicu we found him sans his IV lines and taking in 5.2 cc's of milk an hour!

as soon as we stood over his bed, he opened his eyes and made this gesture as if to say, "geee. it's so nice to wake up and see you again."

the best part of getting "full feeds" is that he's had two IV lines removed. one of them, the peripheral intravenous cardiac catheter (PICC), was causing the bulbous thing earlier in the week so it's nice to have that gone. they also removed an arterial line from his foot.

as an added bonus, removing the lines makes it much easier to move him around during kangaroo care.
