A common sense is often manufactured by the media and the powers that be that the .students now days are largely driven by consumerism, careerism and apathy. The agenda underlying this portrayal emanates from their fear of the vanguard role the students have played across time periods. Recent times have witnessed students across the country thronging the streets·to struggle against corruption and protest against sexual violence on women following the horrific Delhi gang-rape in December. These struggles reiterate the transformative potential of the students' movements. Students have always intervened in polmcal movements be it the Indian freedom movement when a large number of students left their campuses to immerse themselves in the struggle for independence, or in the anti-Vietnam War struggle against imperialisism. From the resounding response of students to the call of Charu Mazumdar during the historic struggle of Naxalbari in the late 1960s or the widespread student and yout]1 upsurge in the late 1970's .
against the imposition of Emergency by the authoritarian Congress -e~i:::e1 the stl!denJ rn. .;veme:--~: have ~istoric~!!; displayed an undying cowage 2:1c the drearr: of a bttter world. It is this potential of the student movement that ruling establishment tries to diffuse by way of unleashing crackdowns to force compliance or co-opting so as to manufacture a false consensus. We are all aware how the ruling class student organisations like the ABVP and the NSUI (of.SJP and Congress respectively) instead of championing student issues, seem to spread the communal hate mongering, violence and neo liberal anti student policies amongst the student communities. Unfortunately, as the official left groups like CPI-CPI (M) debunked their pro-people agenda and openly embraced the corporates as evidenced in Singur, Nandigram or elsewhere, .
their student organisations. too found themselves unable to face the challenges of the times. .
Committed to the idea that a genuine students movement must rise up to address the pressing concerns of its times, All India students' Association (A/SA), founded in August 1990, has emerged as a platform for a consistent pro-people, pro-student .

TheveryfirstAISA-IedJNUSU in 1993-1994, fought to restore .
, the unique 'deprivation point' system in JNU's admission system, ensuring greater space for women and students from backward areas in JNU long before OBC reservation in higher education became a law. Once OBC reservation became a law, in 2008, there was a dangerous conspiracy to scuttle the actual implementation by way of faulty interpretation of the Supreme Court's prescribed 'cut-off' criterion for OBC students. From day one, AISA alone recognized this casteist manipulation and fought a protracted struggle.3 years of painstaking research, mobilization and legal battle, culminated in a r':.'sit~!c .,e;rdict upholding our pos:ticn first 1n the Delhi High Court on 7 .
Sep. 2010 and tJ'1en in the Apex Coun on 18 Aug.2011. The .
judgement has ramifications across the country as it put .
an end to the practice of misinterpreting 'cut-off.' criterion .
by all central universities to scuttle reservations. .
.
AISA has also been in the forefront of the movement to fight .
.
the discriminatory 30 percent viva weightage in the JNU .
entrance exam, which has long been used to discriminate against students coming from deprived backgrounds. After a long process of entering and analysing data for the last 5 .
years, clinching evidence was provided to the JNU administration forcing them to recognize the pattern of glaring discrimination. It is an ongoing struggle that needs to be strengthened and taken to its logical culmination. .
During 2007_08, AISA -led JNUSU spearheaded the .
movement for the recognition of madarsa certificates in .
admissions forcing the JNU Academic Council in 2008 to .
.
give recogmtion to Madarsa certificates, thereby ending 40 years of discriminatory treatment and communal common sense. .
Successive JNUSU's led by AiSA fought and achieved raising .
of finacial assisstance and MCM in JNU in 2004 and 2006 Presently, we are m the midst of one such struggle and University Strike is called on 13 Aug for raising the MCM .
