This is my entry to Beck's Music Inspired Art thingy...
And here's some thoughts about the album, as that's what they ask...
I think Low Life is probably my own favourite New Order album, but Power, Corruption & Lies is never-the-less pretty good. It was actually the first New Order album I bought, back in 1985. I loved the colour codes on the sleeve, and the complete lack of information, which at the time made the band seem all the more mysterious to me. Whenever I think of the album, musically & colour wise, (in the way that Low Life is quite gray in sound), PCL feels quite dark with speckles of bright colours. I suppose this is because of the minimal, but colourful, electronic sound. It also seems an album of songs quite sad and those quite happy, and because of this, I've choose pretty moody dark colours, and also pretty sunny ones, each fighting for attention. It was in trying to figure a way of merging these opposite moods together, that I thought of trying this type of pattern, but it was also influenced by a work by Anton Stankowski & Max Bill, whose work I'd been looking at over the weekend.
New Order's sleeve designer, Peter Saville, was one of the reasons I became a graphic designer, and I later ended up studying like him at Manchester Poly by the same lecturers. Because of his creative shadow over New Order's sleeves, it's hard not to do something quite Saville-esque,

"Blue Monday" is a song performed by English rock band New Order. It was released as a 12-inch single on 7 March 1983 through Factory Records.
It is the best-selling 12" single of all time and has huge influence on pop culture to this day (e.g. it is used in Wonder Woman 1984)
The 1983 edition artwork is designed to resemble a 51⁄4 inch floppy disk. This Lego representation is a slightly larger representation of the front (~13" / ~33cm)
The sleeve does not display either the group name nor song title in plain English anywhere. Instead the legend "FAC 73 BLUE MONDAY AND" on the front (and "THE BEACH NEW ORDER" on the back) is represented in code by a series of coloured blocks. The key enabling this to be deciphered was printed on the back sleeve of the album, Power, Corruption & Lies.
The single's original sleeve, created by Factory designer Peter Saville and Brett Wickens, was die-cut with a silver inner sleeve. It cost so much to produce that Factory Records actually lost money on each copy sold.
I remember buying my first album. It was ‘Reggatta de Blanc’ by ‘The Police’. My Gran was with me when I handed over £3.99 of loose change in Woolworth’s, Bangor. It was 1980. I bought the album because of the song at number 1 in the list below.
I loved my albums. The cover picture; perhaps an inner sleeve with lyrics; dusting the vinyl before placing the needle; and that first ‘click’ followed by that quiet hiss as the first track started.
I chose to buy that 33. It was my music and that, to me, is a powerful thing.
These songs are some of my random favourites. If I did this again, and I probably won’t because of all of the copy/paste/deleting etc involved, there would be another set of songs here.
Click on a number and you might be pleasantly surprised. Tell me if you are and share one of your own favourites with me.
If you’re not, then keep that to yourself. After all, ‘It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll!’.
If the links are not clickable (especially outside the uk – let me know and I’ll change ‘em)
The photo is made up of one picture duplicated three times in elements, one layer converted to mono, and allowed to bleed through the top one with ‘softlight’ blending. Noise applied at 15%

New Order - anyone remember this one from 1983? I bought the CD at a second-hand store years ago just for this one track....

The colourful facade of a music shop in downtown Reykjavik, Iceland. They sold only unusual and custom-made instruments. Great against the Monday blues. I hope you all have a good week.
New Oder - Blue Monday
Saturday, July 14 1979, Hampstead Heath, London having arrived back from Joy Division gig in Manchester the night before. I am sitting directly next to Annik. I saw JD 24 times and many of those were with Annik. Annik didn't have a car so she used to tag along with us. I subsequently did a couple of singles with Annik's 'Les Disques de Crepuscule' (I was ASDH in the band 'Repetition'). The only bad bit of casting in 'Control' was of Annik. The band and Rob were pretty accurate but the casting director obviously never met Annik!

KEVIN CUMMINS: born in Withington, Manchester in 1953, is best known for photographing the Manchester music scene. A timeline that stretches from the burgeoning punk scene of the late 1970s, the emergence of bands such as Joy Division, The Stone Roses and The Smiths in the 1980s and through the 1990s, documenting the rise of the Happy Mondays, New Order and Oasis. Working as a photographer for NME, he produced some of the publications era defining front pages – most notably The Stone Roses ‘paint splatter’ shoot. Kevin was instrumental in establishing City Life, Manchester’s ‘what’s on’ guide and a founding contributor to The Face. Music fan’s fascination with the Manchester music scene over the decades has ensured Kevin’s work is perpetually exhibited.
GREATER MANCUNIANS is a Manchester College student led landmark photography project (supported by Manchester City Council). It features those people born, bred, or who have made their home within the current Greater Manchester boundary and who have in some way culturally shaped the city and its surrounding boroughs.
The project will be published and exhibited in a major city centre exhibition in 2021/22.
